This document is a step-by-step guide to install Oracle

Express Edition Database (XE) on Microsoft Windows

platform and then install Oracle Application Express on

Oracle XE Database

Installing Oracle XE on Windows

1 Navigate to URL

httpwwworaclecomtechnologysoftwareproductsdatabasexeindexhtml to download

Oracle XE database

2 Click on the platform version of Oracle XE database that you would like to install



3 Click on Accept License Agreement to be able to download the database

4 Depending on the language that you intend to use click on the Oracle Database edition that

you would like to install It is better to install multi-byte Unicode database so that all the

languages can be used if required



5 To be able to download the Oracle XE Database software you need to logon to Oracle

Technology Network If you are member of OTN enter your username and password If you are

not a member yet sign up for OTN membership using lsquosign up nowrsquo link Itrsquos free

6 Click on lsquoSave Filersquo



Oracle XE database software will be downloaded to your disk Wait for the download to finish

Depending on your internet connection it may take a while

7 One the file is downloaded navigate to the directory where the software has been downloaded

Double click on OracleXEUnivexe to install Oracle XE database



Click lsquoNextrsquo

Accept the License Agreement Click lsquoNextrsquo



Select the folder where you want to install Oracle XE Click lsquoNextrsquo

Specify the password for SYS amp SYSTEM account You can change the passwords later on also

Specify password as lsquoxersquo Click lsquoNextrsquo



Click lsquoInstallrsquo to start the installation

Wait for the installation to finish



Check the lsquoLaunch Database homepagersquo and Click lsquoFinishrsquo



Logon to database home page to ensure that you are able to logon and the database has been

installed successfully Enter the username as lsquoSYSTEMrsquo and the password that you specified in

the previous step If you specified your password as lsquoxersquo then enter lsquoxersquo as password



Once you have verified that you can login click on lsquoLogoutrsquo





Installing Oracle Application Express on Oracle XE database

Oracle Application Express is available in two installation formats

a One is the full installation of the latest version of Oracle APEX If you do not already have

installed APEX then you can download and install the full installation Full installation of Oracle

APEX software is available at URL

httpwwworaclecomtechnologyproductsdatabaseapplication_expressdownloadhtml

b Second is the patch set that needs to be installed on the existing version If you are already

using Oracle Application Express then you need to download and install the patch set to

upgrade your Oracle Application Express to the latest version The patch set to upgrade to the

latest version of Oracle APEX is available on httpmetalinkoraclecom Go to URL

httpwwworaclecomtechnologyproductsdatabaseapplication_expressindexhtml to find

out the patch number for the latest patch set version

Performing Full Installation of Oracle Application Express

1 If not already done so download the latest version of Oracle Application Express from OTN Go

to URL

httpwwworaclecomtechnologyproductsdatabaseapplication_expressdownloadhtml to

get the latest version of Oracle APEX

2 Click on lsquoAccept License Agreementrsquo



3 Click on lsquoDownloadrsquo to download Oracle Application Express

4 Provide your OTN user id and password to be able to download the software If you do not have

account with OTN yoursquoll need to register yourself first to be able to download the software The

registration is free

Provide your username amp password Click lsquoContinuersquo

If you want to download a prior

release of Oracle Application

Express click here



The software will be downloaded to your PC

5 Once downloaded navigate to the directory where you have downloaded the software and

unzip the file

6 Unzip the file in the same directory



Once unzipped you will see a folder with the name lsquoapexrsquo inside the folder where you have

unzipped the file

7 To install Oracle APEX on Oracle XE database Click on lsquoStartrsquo ndashgt lsquoRunrsquo



8 Type lsquocmdrsquo in the run window and press enter to go to the command window

9 Navigate to the directory where you have unzipped the apex installation files Set the

environment and logon to Oracle XE database If you have not installed Oracle XE database

under ldquo coraclexe ldquo path then replace this value with the path where you have installed Oracle

XE Database



You can copy paste the following to avoid typing errors

set ORACLE_HOME=coraclexeapporacleproduct1020server

set ORACLE_SID=XE

set PATH=ORACLE_HOMEbinPATH

10 Run the following command to install APEX in the database

apexins SYSAUX SYSAUX TEMP i

Once installation finishes you should be seeing the following messages on the screen



11 Review the contents of the log file to ensure that no errors were encountered during the

installation The log file name is in the format of installltYYYY-MM-DD_HH24-MI-SSgtlog

12 Connect to database as SYSDBA user and run the following command to load the images in

Oracle XE Database

apxldimg cltpath_where_apex_software_was_unzippedgt



Once the images are uploaded successfully you should be seeing the following message on

your screen

Exit from sqlplus by typing lsquoexitrsquo

13 Connect again to database as SYSDBA user and run apxxepwdsql to change the password for

Oracle Application express lsquoADMINrsquo user Specify the password when prompted and remember

it

apxxepwdsql




Now you should be able to access your Oracle Application Express Administration Services by

opening the internet browser and typing the URL http1270018080apexapex_admin

14 However if you want others to be able to access the application express through network or if

you want to access Oracle Application Express using your PCrsquos hostname and domain name (eg

httphostnamedomainportapexapex_admin ) connect again to database as SYSDBA user

and run the following command

execute dbms_xdbsetListenerLocalAccess(l_access =gt FALSE)



15 Open the browser type the URL in format httphostnamedomain8080apexapex_admin

and you should be seeing the following screen The username is lsquoadminrsquo and the password is the

password that you specified in step 13 Enter the username amp the password and click on lsquoLoginrsquo

16 When logging on for the first time you will need to change the password for admin user

Specify the old password the new password and click on lsquoApply Changesrsquo



17 Click lsquoReturnrsquo to return to the login page

18 Logon with the new password



Now you are logged on to APEX Administration service and is ready to use APEX Start by

clicking on lsquoManage Workspacersquo and create a new workspace Then logout of APEX

Administration service and login to your workspace using the URL

httphostnamedomain8080apex
