Pindell received her B.F.A. degree in painting from Boston Universi- ty’s School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1965, and her M.F.A. degree from Yale University’s School of Art and Architecture in 1967. Her work is heavily influenced by traditional African art and her belief that the arts community should be more inclusive of women and minorities. In the early 1970s, Pindell discovered the hole punch which lent itself to the creation of her unconventional paintings. Today you will be creating your own confetti style painting inspired by Pindell! • Cardboard • String • Hole puncher • Scissors • Tape • Liquid glue • Colored construction paper • White and colored acrylic paint • Paintbrush Cut out a 7” x 5” oval from your sheet of cardboard. Next, paint stripes across each sheet of construction paper. Create a specific color scheme to work with! When the cardboard oval is completely dry take pieces of string and lay them in a criss-cross pattern. Attach them with tape on the back of the cardboard. Now, paint over the oval piece of cardboard with white acrylic paint. Set aside and leave it to dry. After the paint has dried create confetti by hole punching the sheets of construction paper. Try to hole punch at points where the two colors meet. Finish by applying liquid glue then dropping the different colored confetti around the oval. “Untitled #49” 2010
