Go barefoot for a dayThe Put Foot Foundation is host-ing the first ever official BarefootDay on Tuesday 18 June.

All South Africans are asked to gobarefoot to highlight the plight of un-derprivilegedchildren inSouthAfri-ca, and to commemorate YouthMonth. The Put Foot Foundation has be-

come synonymous with giving chil-drenhope,prideanddignity throughthe gift of a brand new pair of schoolshoes. Through this simple act chil-dren in need are able to play, learnand have fun.National Barefoot Day has been

created tohighlight the impact of nothaving the basics, in this case a pairof school shoes. Walking to school inthe height ofwinter is traumatic andthe embarrassment of not havingshoes overshadows the necessity tolearn.National Barefoot Day will fall in

Youth Month (June) each year, andwill be acknowledged on the firstworking day followingYouthDay on16 June.DarynHillhouse,PutFootFounda-

tion Chairman, has challenged allSouthAfricans to go barefoot on thisday for an hour or a few minutes, to

experience what millions of youngchildren in our country have to dealwith every day, to fully understandtheextentof theproblemand toshowtheir support for SouthAfrica’s chil-dren.South Africans participating in

NationalBarefootDaycan signuporpledge their support on at www.na-tionalbarefootday.com and sharetheir story of support via the officialNational Barefoot Day Facebook

page.On the day, supporters can also

TwitPic or Instagramtheir favouriteimages along with messages of soli-darity, with the hashtags #Barefoot-SA or #ShoesOnFeet.“We want to create a movement,

and more importantly, we want tohelp put brand new pairs of 100%leather, locally produced schoolshoes on the feet of everyneedy childin South Africa,” pledged Hillhouse. He said that the Put Foot Founda-

tion, a registered NGO, has raisedmore than R1.5 million since incep-tion in June 2012.“We have helped over 5 000 chil-

dren and touched the lives of hun-dreds of teachers, parents and ordi-nary South Africans. The NationalBarefoot Day is the next chapter inthe Foundations success, and weneed all South African’s to get in-volved, including corporates or indi-viduals – we can all make a differ-ence.”Supporters of the National Bare-

Stay safe this winterThe cold, wet weather during thewinter months keeps many peo-ple indoors; but in some cases noteven this is enough to keep crimi-nals at bay. There are anumber of practical

measures that can be followed toimprove your safety and that ofyour loved ones and belongings.RobDale,ManagingDirector of

ADT Security,Western Cape saidthe first step is to be more awareofwhat is going aroundyou, espe-cially in the mornings and eve-nings when it’s dark outside.“When leaving home, at any

time of the day, always ensurethat all doors and safety gates inyour home are properly lockedand that you have activated thealarm system before you shut thedoor behind you. If you are goingout alone, possibly to the shops orthe gym, it is important that youlet someone know when you ex-pect to return.”Another good idea is to never

let yourhomeappear to be empty, regardless of whether you are athome or not.“Visibility can be drastically

reducedongrey, gloomydaysandcrooks could take advantage ofthis to try to enter your property

or burgle your home. Turn on thelights in one or two rooms; possi-bly one at the front and anotherat the rear of the house.”“Also, never leavethedriveway

gate open - even if someone ishome, if it is pouring with rain orif you plan to only be away for ashort while – because criminalscould see this as an invitation tocome onto your property.”Dale added that exercising cau-

tion when driving into or out ofyourproperty isequallyas impor-tant. He said grey conditions orheavy rainfall could divert yourattention fromwhat is happeningaround you, leaving you vulnera-ble to being caught off guard bycriminals.“If you have an electric gate,

open it before you turn into yourdriveway; this will prevent hi-jackers fromboxingyou inandal-low you the chance to get away.If you have to manually open thegate, leave the key in the ignitionand the motor running. Howeveryou must take the key with youif you have a child in the car. Inthis kind of hijacking situationthe key is a valuable negotiatingtool; they want your car and youwant your child.”

Rising chicken pricesLEIGH SCHALLER

Chicken prices are set to rise drasti-cally this month and the residentsfrom Stellenbosch are not happy. The price of imported chicken is

set to rise by as much as 50 per cent. This after South Africa’s Interna-tional Trade Administration Com-mission increased duties by up to 82percent.This means that Stellenboschers

who pay R30 for a portion of meatmay soonhave to fork out R45 for thesame product. Not everyone is taking the blow ly-

ing down.BistroMeatCentre, situatedonthe

corner of Crozier and Bird Streets, has recently run a campaign to fightthe increase. The campaign allowedenraged shoppers to show their sup-port by signing a petition.Stephan Brink from the compa-

nies regional office said as many as

10 000 people have signed petitionsacross the Cape Peninsular.“The increases are absolutely ri-

diculous,” said Brink. “The chickenportions are themain thing that willbe affected. This is only the tip of theiceberg. It will also affect the foodservices industry.”Shoppersqueuing tobuygroceries

on Bird Street are also concerned.“Theycan’tmakeeverythingmore

expensive. Bread and electricityhave already gone up,” said LouiseAnthony“I remember the days where we

would raise our ownchickens. Itwasbetter then,” said Mary Pietersen.“The increase in tariffs ismeant to

support the local chicken farming in-dustry, which is shedding jobs.”Kekkel en Kraai, situated on Bird

Street, only sells South Africanchicken. They are unsure how itwillaffect their sales. “I hope our salesget better,” said owner Petro Werth.

Earthlife is ’n organisasie son-

der winsbejag wat as drukgroepoor omgewingsake funksioneer.

Lekalakalahet gesêdit is onaan-

gie is sentraal tot sosiale ontwik-keling,maardieprysvangoedere,insluitend kos, elektriese krag enparaffien as energiebron, stygvoortdurend.

Mamphela Ramphele, leier

10 fast facts about litteringLittering is a problem thatstarts with the action of a sin-gleperson.We,however,haveto teachourchildrennot to lit-ter so that the environment iskept clean. Here are a fewfacts about littering and howwe can prevent it:

)Don’t throw your fast-food containers, cans or bot-tles out of a car window. Usea litter bag in your vehicle oron public transport.

)Dropping papers, pack-ets, plastic bags or other rub-bish while walking is also lit-tering.

)Why should we worryabout litter?Becauseit iscost-ing you money. Millions of

rands are spent pickingup lit-ter each year.

)Our country’s naturalbeauty is spoilt bycareless lit-tering.

)Litternot only looksugly, but it also threatens publichealthas rubbishpilesupandbecomes homes for rats andother pests.

)Litter can harm the envi-ronment by contributing tomaking the environmentdirty and poisonous. It can al-so harm animals and plants.

)Rubbish on streets, whether it is dropped on pur-pose or it falls out of an over-full dustbin, can get washedor blown into the storm

drains. The water from thestorm drains goes directly in-to our river systems, where itcancausewaterpollutionandbecomes a danger to watercreatures aswell as to plants.

)Always put your rubbishin a proper container. If thereisn’t one available, keep yourrubbish until you find one.

)If you have municipalrefuse removal in your area, put your rubbish out for col-lection as close to pick-uptime as possible.

)Make sure the bags areclosed properly so that dogsand other animals cannot getin and scatter rubbish every-where.

Foundation visits HB ThomUpon discovering that the Stel-lenboschUniversityDramaDe-partment would be putting ona performance of Rumpelstilt-skin at the HB Thom theatre, the Anna Foundation knewthey could not let this opportu-nity slide.

Almost the entire theatre wasbooked out for the Anna Founda-tion’s primary school pupils whoall live on surrounding farms inthe area.

The main character (Rumpel-stiltskin), who was also the vil-lain, proved to be rather frighten-ing to some of the younger chil-dren as he would appear on stage, out of nowhere, in a huge ball ofsmoke.

Each time one of the childrenwould pipe up: “Oh no, not thatrude man again!” or a variationthereof.

The Anna Foundation childrenbecame so caught up in the storythat during the final weddingscene all of them rose up out oftheir chairs and danced alongwithall theweddingguests, muchto the amusement of the othertheatre-goers.

After the show the childrenhadthe opportunity to meet the cast, shaking hands or exchanginghugs with their favourite charac-ters.

The Anna Foundation ispleased to report that most of thechildren made peace with “therude man”.

Some of the children seen here with the “Princess” after the play.

The children had a whale of a time at HB Thom.
