2 Steinmetz Star September 2010

By Dr. Eunice Madon, PrincipalWow! Summer just flew by. Welcome

back everyone. I hope you enjoyed your time away from Steinmetz and that you are well rested and ready to go.

A special welcome if you are new to Stein-metz. We know that you will find friends and activities here that will make you feel at home.

This year is going to be very exciting. We have new programs planned for all year groups and more incentive initiatives than we have ever had before. Our teachers have been working throughout the summer to pre-pare lessons for you that will peak your in-terests and build your academic skills. I look forward to seeing you soon. I am very happy you have chosen to be a Steinmetz Streak.

Summer school should be avoided

Lowes provides new fences

Students Cecilia Caudel Raygoza, Melania Gomez and Salima Azzouzi join Lowes District Manager Jim Spicuzza, Principal Eunice Madon, and Lowes Brickyard store manager Derrek Rexroth at a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 6. The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to build a security fence around the campus, thus creating a safe enclosure for the students to participate in athletic events. Steinmetz was chosen as one of only 25 schools or community organizations nationwide to receive this grant.

Ready for an exciting year

By Jasmine Sheppard When I was a freshman everybody who

had to attend summer school was very up-set and I just didn’t know why. Isn’t sum-mer school just like regular school?

Absolutely not! You spend four hours in one class.

That can be very annoying, especially if you have people like Kierre Gillespe in Quenelle Smith in your class. Uhg!

We even had cold lunches everyday. Who do they expect to eat that? Not me. One thing I know is Steinmetz made a profit off me because I stayed at that vending machine everyday.

Ms. Grant’s trigonometry class was

fun. I laughed everyday in that class, and I passed with the highest score. Overall sum-mer school was kind of fun, but I would not go again.

Star Photo Opinion

REPORT & PHOTO BY YARITZA MARROQUIN

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

“I would clone myself so I could get all my homework and chores done.”

Nashaelly Marroquin, freshman

“I would have the power to get whatever I wanted to eat, whenever I wanted it.”

Kassandra Mercado, sophomore

“I would choose to fly because I want to know what Heaven feels like.”

Frank Bland, junior

“Telekinesis. I’m lazy so I would move things to me.”

Raymond Masciopinto, senior

“The ability to stop time. I am so busy after work with my children, Luis (11) and Nay-eli (3). I take them to football and swim-ming, dance and gymnastics. I wish I had more time for all my mom needs.”

Amy Rivera, security

“I would love to have the capability to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. My powers would detect all homeless and hungry individuals automatically and with a simple snap of my fingers, I would take flight and deliver food and shelter to all in need.”

Summer training strengthens runners

Captains Lucy Licona (far left) and Sammy Balbuena, senior Mely Gomez, and Captains Momo Rafael and Mercedes Reyes show the kind of team unity that scares the competition as they work out at Riis Park in August. In the background is sophomore Fanny Reyes sneaking up on her teammates. It is not too late to come on out. Bring friends who are up to the challenge. Monday through Friday afternoon practices are from 3:15 to 5:00. The first girls cross country meet is Tuesday, September 14. By Zak PekovicThe varsity soccer team is undefeat-

ed. After five games, the team — led by captains Walter Canola and Damian Ja-huchowski — has shown itself to be a wor-thy opponent.

The Streaks beat Phoenix and Marine Academy by four goals, Richards by seven and Prosser by one. Steinmetz tied with Amundsen.

“We’ve started the season on the right foot,” coach Nicolas Kotchera said. “I’d love to keep this momentum up.”

The upcoming games are against some stronger teams, Mr. Kotchera said. Support from students and staff would be greatly appreciated by the team.

Hey senior: Are you a leader? The Class of 2011

needs you!
