The San Fernando Valley has a long and rich Western
heritage.
In the 1930’s Republic Studios, where CBS Studios in Studio City
now stands, cranked out many a western oater. For 25 years the
studio played home to many silver screen cowboy who spent their
free time in the Valley’s small towns and enclaves where western
hang-outs like the Palomino Club and Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors took
center stage.
Residents like horse trainer Glen Randall and prop rental
merchant Fat Jones, whose business was located on the corner of
Cahuenga and Oxnard Blvd., made their livelihoods supplying the
studios with services and materials needed to produce their western
films, serials and television programs.
During it’s heyday, silver screen cowboys like Rex Allen, Roy
Rogers, Monte Montana, Gene Autry, Stuart Hamblin, Dennis Weaver
and Smiley Burnette all made the Valley their homes, with beautiful
sprawling ranches encompassing the wide open spaces. From Gene’s
beautiful ranch nestled behind what is now the Beverly Garland
