PRESIDENT’s PALAVER AUGUST 2019 Issue

It is that time of year again when we should be remembering to renew our

memberships. Although not due until the 31st August each year we are sending out

forms early to encourage members to fill them out. Only about 40% of members

each year complete the form and return. This means our vehicle register is

becoming quite out-of-date. By all means still pay on-line or post but can you make

an effort to get the forms returned this year so we can update your details.

For our members currently undergoing treatment and ‘out of action’, we wish you

only the best outcomes and hope to see you up and about in the near future.

Hope to see as many members as can make it on our remaining runs this year. Also

get your names into me for our AGM Breakfast this year to be held at the Glass

House Mountains Bowls Club as they need numbers prior.

Car Facts We are very familiar with car accidents and we have seen them since moving vehicles have been around us. But, some of the worst accidents occurred before there were any real "rules of the road". During the 1920's a driver’s license was not needed in most states of America. There were no signs, signals, or traffic enforcement, and in many cases the roads were filled with ruts and at times, filled with holes. It was the Wild West when it came to driving and life was risky, not just for drivers, but for pedestrians as well. The combination of inexpensive cars, (The model T Ford was less than $300), and poorly maintained roads, uneducated drivers, and speeds approaching 40 mile per hour, was the perfect combination for some really bad accidents. But, when we look at the photos and see the lack of any protection for the occupants. There are sharp corners of metal, non-shatterproof glass, and potential for being thrown out of the vehicle. The well-known term for these cars was "Tin Lizzy" and they were designed for fast production and not safety. While we have come a long way in safety, the driver is still the problem. Now it is texting and other distractions that seem ubiquitous. In either case, the only winners are the body shop and the lawyers! Photos from the National Photo Archive from Washington, DC.

Memorial Run Report – Sunday 7th July 2019 Minnippi Parklands – Tingalpa Model Aero Club

The weather leading up to the Memorial Run didn’t look too good, showery on Saturday but the forecast looked hopeful for a fairly good day. I was woken up early Sunday morning by a heavy shower of rain and my first thought was can’t take the MG so it would have to be the Crown. I had decided to head straight to the Minnippi Parklands instead of driving north to Caboolture and then returning south to Wynnum Road Cannon Hill, thus saving petrol and not using the Gateway Motorway and paying the toll, so I left Bracken Ridge around 7.45am and went up Gympie Road to the City across the Story Bridge down Lytton and Wynnum roads to Cannon Hill stopping at Hungry Jacks for a Brekky wrap and free coffee before driving 2 km to finish my run to the Tingalpa Model Aero Club arriving around 8.45am. I had plenty of time to check out the Parklands and then decided to park in the grounds of the Aero Club. It wasn’t long before 2 members of the club came to admire the Crown and ask questions about the Car. I told them it was original paint and one fellow pointed out a scratch that I had touched up. He must have thought the being original paint meant that it shouldn’t be touched up. They were looking forward to the rest of the club turning up. I went and checked out the aero club facilities and get some general Info about the workings club and if it was Ok to park and have our meeting in their car park. Around 9.45am the rest of the club turned up in single file so I stood at gate beckoning them to join me in the Aero Club grounds, but they just turned left and continued on. Kim walked up joined me and checked out the area so we went down and had the others joined me at the Aero Club. I learnt later that they had chosen an area near lake to distribute the Memorial Rosemary in Remembrance of Past Members. Club members circled the chairs and immediately got stuck into morning tea and lunch. A quick meeting followed and Sally’s Hat collected $44.60, no raffle due to lack of members and Goose Club was collected by Don & Phyllis Streeton after drawing out their own number, they certainly picked the right run to come to. A lucky ticket was the means of deciding who held the Memorial Trophy for next 12 Months so one of Neils and Aileen Andersen Grandsons due out a lucky ticket, who else but Neils and Aileen’s ticket. With meeting and eating finished the members checked out the Aero Club facilities and inquired about building and flying the model planes. Very interesting Hobby. We were asked if our Club would be part of a Hobby Display to be held by the Aero Club on Sunday 15th September from 8am to 2pm. We would with other clubs take part in a Static car display along with other hobbies such as Remote trains, army/armoured vehicles full size, trucks and steam engines. Anyone interested contact Pat on 0417 493 785. With the day concluded and dark rain clouds approaching from the south members made a hasty retreat home. Myself and FE John headed south to visit family to immediately run into showers. We had 13 Members, 9 Cars and Susie the Dog in attendance A great and interesting run, thanks to Kim and Carol. CHACC Run Report WEDNESDAY 17th JULY 2019 LIFE FLIGHT Mid-Week Run

Only 8 members 5 vehicles turned up at the Sundowner for

our run to Caloundra. Arthur & Glenda Hall joined us at our

destination. Very disappointing considering the effort

Arthur put in to organising this very interesting venue.

Great to see Neils & Aileen’s new ‘toy’ already registered and

on the road. Their FC Holden parked next to John’s FE was

certainly worth a photo.

We were given a more than informative video and talks from Life Flight volunteers, David &

Lawrence and this was topped off by Air crewman Tony who had heaps to tell us on their

unique helicopters and their contents and functions. They rely heavily on donations, their

major sponsor being the RACQ. The day was topped off by a counter lunch at the

Diddillibah Waterfront Hotel which Arthur had also organised and managed to get us all

extremely good “mates” rates meals. Thank you Arthur & Glenda for a great day.
