The compact and simple design lessens theweight and is quick and easy to install.
Rolls-Royce supplies a completerange of steering gear, suitable for allsizes of ships. The products aredesigned with the totality of actuator, power pack, steering control andalarm system in mind. Due to a widerange of demands, great care has beentaken from material selection throughconstruction in order to meet thestrictest quality demands.Rolls-Royce Tenfjord and Frydenböseries of rotary vane steering gearshave been manufactured for morethan 50 years, with more than 25 000machines delivered. The principle of arotary vane gives more flexibilitywhen choosing the design and typesof rudder, thanks to the rudder anglesof up to 2 x 70º. Rotary vane steeringgear does make navigation throughnarrow straits safer, because of thevessels' increased manoeuvrabilityand improved control when docking.
The rotary vane principle also ensuresa constant torque throughout thesteering sequence, providing the gearwith maximum power output. Theunique technical solutions ensure verylow noise and vibration levels.
The compact and simple designreduces weight and secures fast andeasy installation of the steering gear. The actuators are mounted directly onthe rudder stock, without necessaryuse of keys or keyways, facilitatingeasier assembly and dismantling ofthe rudder stock. The rudder torque istransmitted by hydraulic coupling orby expansion rings (for the smallestmachines). The Brown Brothers rotaryvane steering gear range is designedfor naval applications and meets thehighest standards for noise, shockand vibration.

Tenfjord SR series steering gears
The Tenfjord SR series is suitable forsmall to medium-sized vessels. Thesteering gear is designed withintegrated frequency controlledpumps.
The pump utilises a reversiblehydraulic pump motor together witha frequency converter for changingthe speed and the direction of thepump. The design gives smoothstarting and stopping of the steering
gear, and enables a precise analoguecontrol system. The pump engines aremounted directly on the rudderactuator, which lessens the need forpiping work on board a vessel.

Frydenbö RV series steering gear
The Frydenbö steering gear has aproven service record on all types ofvessels. Today’s range is suitable formedium-sized to large ships, including large container vessels andVLCCs. The weight is typically 50-60% of a RAM-type steering gear, with much smaller space requirement.Furthermore, the Frydenbö design’sdual, submerged pump power packsmakes installation even easier, as noexpansion tank is needed. Installationis also simpler because of the integrated storage tank and ruddercarrier.
The Frydenbö Modulated FlowControl modulates the oil flow to theactuator in order to give a soft startand low rudder speed for smallrudder movements. The oil flowgradually increases to full flow, allowing full turning speed on therudder. The system ensures a veryprecise rudder positioning at smallrudder angles during course keeping, while the full flow ensures fullmanoeuvring capability whenneeded.
Product benefits:• Modulated flow control• Integrated oil storage tank• No expansion tank required• High levels of positioning precision
Frydenbö IRV series steering gear
IMO regulations require compliancewith the principle of single failurecriteria for large tankers over 100,000dwt. This requirement is met by theIRV series, which incorporatesautomatic isolation of the actuator'sdual hydraulic system. The actuator isequipped with a double sealingsystem, completely separating theactuator in two individual pressurechambers. In addition, the specially-designed sensor system maintainsconstant control of the integrity of theseals.
Frydenbö 4-vane steering gear
This is a range of extremely compactrotary vane steering gear, which issuitable for large vessels includingtankers over 100,000 dwt. The 4-vanesteering gear is a further developmentof the well proven Frydenbö range ofsteering gear with two and threevanes. The key advantages of thisdesign is its compact size because ofthe four vanes and its light weight aswell. The 4-vane steering gear isavailable as the standard model as wellas the IRV model, which satisfies all
statutory requirements for tankersover 100,000dwt. This range alsoincorporates Frydenbö’s proven andunique modulated flow control valve.
Frydenbö Unitized steering gear
The Frydenbö Unitized steering gearis an application of the RV and IRVranges that combines actuators, power packs, storage tanks andfoundations on a single, compact skid. This design can handle mostpreparatory and work tasks related tosteering gear installations on board. This cuts labour costs, minimises riskand helps ensure punctualinstallation.

The Brown Brothers actuator gears isa cost-effective and reliable solution. The gear is made redundant on asingle rudder by means of twoactuator systems. For example, oneactuator can be bypassed away fromthe system, and still provide around50% torque.
Furthermore, use of the actuator typemeans fewer interface surfaces onboard because the actuator's anchorbrackets can be welded directly on tothe hull cartridge. This means thatactuator steering gear is lesstolerance-critical for installation.
If problems occur with the hydraulicdriving mechanism, replacing anactuator is easier than a rotary vane ora ram type of steering gear.

General description rudders
Rolls-Royce is a supplier ofrudders as well as propellers. We can therefore draw on ourlong experience and know-howin the field of cavitationprediction, as this can occur anddamage rudders and propellers.Advanced calculation programsensure optimal propulsiveefficiency and manoeuvringperformance.
The directional stability of shipsin transit must be consideredwhen designing the rudder. Wedevelop and use advancedcomputer programs to simulatedifferent manoeuvres such asthe IMO criteria (e.g. zig-zagtest). The software uses theactual hull shape to calculate thehydrodynamic hull forces. Withthis software we can evaluatedifferent rudder sizes and typesto optimise the rudder designfor each vessel.
Requirements for goodmanoeuvrability at low speedoften governs a rudder's design.Extensive testing of modelvessels has been carried out incollaboration with leadingEuropean test centres, in orderto optimise and document themanoeuvring properties of ourrudders at low speed.
Rolls-Royce offers a range ofrudders to meet customerrequirements – both with andwithout flap.

The illustration visualises thehydrodynamics for classic rudders.
The rudder design is also important for overall propulsive efficiency. It is a compromise: if arudder is optimized for propulsive efficiency, you will loose manoeuvrability (especially atlow speed) and vice versa. This is why a good understanding of shipowners' requirementsis vital when designing rudders.

Product benefits:• Superior steering abilities• Minimum installation time• High reliability• Custom-built to fit hull• Suits all types of steering gear
Rolls-Royce has developed and built
flap rudders since 1985. The
performance of a flap rudder is
determined both by the flap, the link
mechanism and the profile, as well as
the hull and propeller. Rolls-Royce
has therefore designed a range of flap
rudders to cover different types of
vessels and functions, in order to
make sure that customers receive a
rudder best suited to their vessels and
operations.
Ulstein Hinze FB has a bulbous
profile for maximum manoeuvring
performance, suitable at low to
medium speed. This rudder also has
large upper and lower vane plates. It
is ideal for use on workboats, fishing
vessels and offshore vessels, as well
as on small tankers, cargo vessels,
ferries and other coastal vessels.
Ulstein Hinze FM has a moderate
profile for enhanced manoeuvrability,
suitable at medium speed. The
rudder is suited to vessels up to
20,000 dwt with high demand for
manoeuvrability.
Ulstein Hinze FS has a slim profile,
suitable at medium to high speed.
The rudder is built around a cast cone
module, and has a strong link
mechanism and hinge system to
withstand high forces. Used for
Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax, passenger and cruise
vessels and tankers, but it is also an
all-round flap rudder suitable for all
types of vessels up to approx.
50,000 dwt.

General description fin stabilisers
Rolls-Royce fin stabiliser systemsuse one or more pairs of hydrofoilshaped fins projecting from avessel’s bilge area. Vessel speeds, and the angle of the fins in thewater, determine the extent ofgenerated lift, either up or down. The stabiliser control system sensesthe degree of ship movement, andsignals the stabiliser hydraulics toalter the angle of the fins to returnthe vessel to an even keel. The resultis usually an 80 - 90% reduction inroll when compared with an un-stabilised vessel.
The Brown Brothers Neptune andAquarius folding-fin stabilisers, both incorporate a one-piece finconstruction, with a “fishtail“high-lift profile. When not in use,the fins are folded into recesses inthe hull, flush with the vessel’s side.
For applications where retraction ofthe fin is not required, the Modularrange is available for naval applications and the Gemini rangefor smaller commercial vessels where high performance and lowcosts are important factors. Brown Brothers Aquarius folding-fin
stabiliser range is specially configuredfor smaller vessels.
Aquarius can boast terrificstabiliser performance, thanksto its one-piece, high-lift fin.
The Neptune II folding-fin stabiliser provides optimalvessel performance at lowownership costs.

Intering™
stabilisation systems
The illustration visualises a combinedtank stabiliser and anti-heeling system.
Intering tank stabilisers are optimisedto be effective in different loadingconditions. More than one set of tankscan be fitted when necessary. Where tank space is limited, Interingsystems can use a corrosion-inhibitingheavy fluid, reducing the spacerequired by more than 30%.
Product benefits:• Up to 40 – 50% roll reduction at sea • Damage to cargo and ship avoided
Intering controlled tank systems aredesigned to give 40-50% lower roll onaverage. Unlike passive tanks, Interingtank stabilisers react immediately andindividually to any changes in rollmotion, providing top performanceand flexibility. They are also effectiveat low speed or when stationary.
Rolls-Royce Intering U-shaped tankstabiliser systems use water or heavyfluid, and can be supplied as stand-alone systems. They can also becombined with an anti-heeling systemfor increased safety/payload or BrownBrothers fin stabilisers for forenhanced roll reduction at any speed.
The U-shaped tank stabiliser comprisestwo tanks which are linked by achannel across the ship; one port andone starboard. The system is tuned sothat when a ship rolls, more water willrise on the "high" side, thus creating arighting moment to reduce the roll.Valves block the water flow in cyclesby controlling the air pressure abovethe waterline to create optimal effect. The inevitable free surface effect ofstabiliser tanks can be compensated ifthese are included in a ship's designfrom the outset.
Intering tank stabilisation systems provideroll reduction of up to 40 – 50% in normal rough seas, which is enough to preventdamage from rolling.
Intering tank stabilisers areeffective even at low speed.
• More comfort and smootherrunning of vessels
• Efficiency independent of shipsspeed
• Immediate and individual reactionto any change in roll motion
• Dual use of tanks in harbour foranti-heeling operation
• No need to alter tank waterlevels.
• Low maintenance – no movingparts in water
General descriptionstabilisation systems
Rolls-Royce is a turnkey supplierof marine stabilisation systems, including the Intering tankstabilisation systems and InteringAnti-heeling systems. This rangeof products can be supplied asstand-alone systems or as part ofa collective system. More than650 vessels to date have beenfitted with Intering motioncontrol equipment.
Intering™ tank stabilisation systems
Rolls-Royce can supply a combination of fin stabilisation andpassive tank stabilisation systems, giving advantages which cannot beachieved from a single system alone.
Tank stabilisers are an attractivecomplement to fin stabilisers, whichneed a minimum speed of six orseven knots in order to be effective.A combined system can reduce the
required fin size and improve rollreduction at all speeds.
Product benefits • Roll reduction achieved at all
speeds• Reduced drag from using smaller
fins • Fins do not need to be off-set,
thereby increasing efficiency
The required fin size for the combined system is smaller with enhanced roll reduction at all speeds.

Parametric roll prevention systemsare designed to prevent the build upof parametric roll in head or followingseas. Sea-keeping model testsdemonstrate that the InteringParametric Roll Prevention systemcan reduce the risk of parametricdisturbance by shifting the criticalwave threshold to such high valuesthat the the chances of everencountering such a roll during avessel's service life are extremely low.
A typical example of a complete shipsystem will include several pairs ofU-shaped tanks and pneumaticallycontrolled air valves, plus a controlunit with pitch and roll sensors. Thecontroller detects the onset of parametric rolling and uses the damping effect of the tanks fluid’s oscillations, which is controlled by airvalves in accordance with the ship'smotion.
The system is effective in preventingparametric roll and also in minimisingregularly disturbed roll motion by upto 20%.
Product benefits:• Prevents the build-up of parametric
roll in a head or tail wind forimproved safety
• Reduces regular ship roll by about20%
• Automatic response – system isalways in standby mode

The Anti-heeling were developed tokeep ships upright during loadingand unloading. The Intering anti-heeling system uses a constantpneumatic air purge and regulatingvalve system to force air into the topof one tank while venting the one onthe other side. This rapidly transferswater from one side of the vessel tothe other, creating a righting moment, which compensates for heeling forces. This system is available as a stand-alone system and/or in combinationwith the functionality of continuouscyclical heeling in level ice (Ice-Heeling System).
Intering systems up to 5,000 tonnesmetres per minute are in operationand can be supplied as either standalone air blower activated, combinedwith tank stabilisers, pump activated, with dedicated heeling pump orintegrated into the ballast system.Trim control systems can be combined
with the anti-heeling systems. Unlikeanti-heeling systems, these make useof ballast tanks fore and aft in thevessel to compensate for any trimmoments automatically or on thecommand of a controller. be operatedby dedicated trim pumps or designedas an integral element within theballast system.
Product benefits • Rapid loading and unloading • Damage avoided to ramps, rolling
cargo, cell guides and containers• Unlimited change of water flow
direction (air blower system)• No current peaks for motor starts
during operation (air blowersystem)
• Loading and discharging quicker• Harbour time reduced thus saving
