New ways of living & consuming….
In the EU and US, buildings of all types
consume about 40% of raw materials, as
well as 40% of the world's primary energy,
including 72% of generated electricity.
By 2020, new constructions will have to be
“Near Zero Energy Buildings”.
New ways of urban living, consumption,
mobility and architectural conception are
emerging…..

Energy Performance of Buildings
Directive (2010) - EPBD
1. EU directive to be translated in national legislations (eg. RT 2012 in France)
2. Applicable to all sizes of buildings
3. All new buildings must be “nearly zero energy buildings” by 2020 (2019 for new public buildings)
4. « Nearly zero energy buildings » (NZEB) refers to on-site RES
“building that has a very high energy performance (…). The nearly zero or very low
amount of energy required should to a very significant extent be covered by energy
coming from renewable sources, including renewable energy produced on-site or
nearby”.
1. Specific frameworks and norms: HQE, BREEAM, LEED, ….

Concluding Remarks
1. PV has unique fundamentals; costs are declining rapidly and PV will already become
massively competitive within the current decade
2. In the short and medium term PV will become mainstream and could make a huge
contribution by providing clean and competitive electricity to both developed and
developing economies
3. In the longer term, PV is expected to become one of the most competitive energy
technology; it could supply up to 20% of the World power demand by 2050.
4. In Europe, we can expect an increasing focus on BIPV
• Importance of building sector regarding energy management
• BIPV creates distinctive value and stimulates building industry
• Economic development firmly anchored locally
• Massive availability of roof and façade surfaces vs high opportunity cost of land
