Peter Scolari Good Times Magazine - August 13 - 26, 2013 • 21 Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Butterflies Are Free Who: Steel Wolf ranks as one of Long Island’s longest-lasting rock bands. From their bio: “After taking their band’s moniker, Steel Wolf, from Lithuanian folklore in 1982 and releasing their first album (the now out-of-print, cassette-only release Eternal Damnation) and asked to fill in the “style” blank in the 1986 Good Times A-Z Local Band Directory, band leader Mark Adomaitis, then age 18, used the words ‘killer’ and ‘explosive.’ “Twelve years later in a Good Times review of Steel Wolf’s Boozer Friendly album (now stream- ing on Youtube), J. Corbo wrote “A shining example of Steel Wolf’s uncanny ability to both shock and amuse is from [the song] ‘Aural Sects at Gun Poin’… [it’s] all about … comical, vulgar, insightful and cut- ting edge lyrics, abrasive guitars and thunderous drums. Steel Wolf blends punk anachronisms with Lithuanian mythology.” “Eleven year later, also in Good Times, in a review of Steel Wolf’s Embracing Mainstream Success album (currently on iTunes), Tony Rettman wrote that ‘Steel Wolf is a band of longstanding Long Island rockers who have played everywhere from the birthplace of punk, CBGB, to the Lithuanian heritage camp Neringa, located in Vermont. Although the group is proud of its Lithuanian heritage, it is obvious by song titles such as ‘Spread The Love Mayonnaise’ and ‘Shoplifting Bananas’ that it still finds time to pile on the laughs … (Guitar and vocals) straddle the fence between the riff-heavy sounds of 70s British hard rockers and the raw urgency from punk rock days of yore.’ This year, in celebration of three decades of rockin’, Steel Wolf released Variety Pack (free down- load at steelwolf.bandcamp.com) which included new song contribu- tions not only by current members Adomaitis (lead vocals, percussion), Al Kezys (drums, vocals), Greg Szlezak (bass) ,and Paul Naronis (guitar), but also from past members Ed Kezys and Mike Jaillon, and potential future member Clark Adomaitis (Mark’s son), playing a myriad of instruments. It also con- tained the final work done with seminal bassist Ellis Spanos before his untimely passing in March. The bulk of the album was recorded at Recording Engineers Institute in Islandia. “Due to this anniversary album, a new turnstile approach in regards to which members perform in concerts – such as the 2012 XIV Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival held in Boston, as well as the 2013 Long Island Music Festival – was brought to life, much to audiences’ delight.” To Learn More About The Artists: Further information about Steel Wolf can be found at steelwolf.99k.org and at Wikipedia and Facebook; their recordings can be ordered through the Nassau County Public Library and Amazon.com – on which their 2003 self-proclaimed album Midnight Train To Siauliai “was ranked #1,617,738 in sales as of this writing,” according to the band. Steel Wolf rehearses at Lyric Studios in Garden City and performs regularly at Floral Park- area street fairs and open mics, Fuzzy’s in Bellerose, the ING NYC Marathon, and the Lithuanian camp Giraite in Connecticut.
