Characteristics of These Steel Reels The BOXY Structural Reel line of steel reels can be fabricated to any desirable size and capacity. In-house engineering and modeling has allowed BOXY and HOWAR to configure a properly designed reel to withstand the rigors of a drum twister. During processing, the reel is sub- jected to greater lateral forces because of the dual rotation during cabling. In response to this, additional reinforce- ments are added to stiffen the flanges as well as the drum, which absorbs the weight as well as the cable tension. The reel’s weight rests on two arbor bushings, which need to be sized and structured accordingly, as up to 50 tons of weight can rest on these two items. Solid steel machined bushings are used to create a solid seating surface for the reels to couple with the drum twister. The structural steel reels are finished with special epoxy paints for a durable finish to customers’ desired colors. The reels can further be customized with lifting pockets where these reels can be safely lifted using spreader bars (also available from BOXY and HOWAR).
