I would love to welcome you to join me for an hour or two and see if you enjoy the banter and fun. By coming along this does not commit you to anything. We would however love a few more volunteers who would like a monthly, or fortnightly or even a weekly slot, usually shared with someone else. In Wrens over the past few weeks we have been enjoying learning all about Brazil. We have learnt lots about the rainforest and also about the rest of Brazil such as Rio. As part of this we went on a nature hunt and used our f indings to create our own version of the Christ The Redeemer. We have also made non-f iction books and rain sticks. In the upcoming weeks we will be learning more about Brazil and carnivals.

We had a great t ime at Boydells farm! Milking a cow, feeding the animals and holding the babies - it was a wonderful experience for all of us.

This week we have also written some bril l iant instructions for making marvelous medicines and have been focusing on money in maths.

Swimming is continuing to go really well for Wrens and I am very proud of how well they are all doing!

HEAD TEACHER'S AWARDS

WRENS

KINGFISHERS

It has been a very busy two weeks in Kingfishers.

Last week we enjoyed a trip to Boydells Farm with Wrens. We took part in so many activit ies. We milked a cow called Toffee, held baby lambs, fed the animals and watched a sheep being sheared. The farmer taught us lots of interesting facts about his animals and the produce his sells. Back in the classroom we wrote a diary all about our farm trip.

We have been continuing our carnival topic. We have been looking at the Rio and Colombian Carnivals, made face masks and have a carnival dressing up area in the classroom. We have also created carnival poems.

In maths we are learning to order and sequence numbers.

Next week we will begin work to create our very own carnival!

Wow! We have had a busy two weeks in Owls class. We have had many sporting events and children visit ing their secondary schools.

In maths we have been looking at coordinates and compass directions and the children used this knowledge to follow a pirate treasure hunt and f ind the buried treasure. Just l ike true pirates, arrrr.

In literacy we have f inished writ ing our maps of the nine realms in Norse Cosmology, and they look awesome! This week we have been looking at information texts. We have studied dif ferent types and identif ied the dif ferent features. The children are now currently planning information text about one of the Viking realms. I am quite excited to read these when they are f inished

In Topic we have been learning about the Vikings. We have done a lot of art in the class over the past two weeks and we have made our own Viking shield wall, which children and staff are all very proud of. Also in Owls we have had a couple of science afternoons where we experimented with forces. The children investigated the effects of upthrust and what type of sail produces the best air resistance.

The Year 6s went to Crucial Crew last week and learnt a variety of l ife skil ls they will need as they grow up.

In Woodpeckers over the past couple of weeks the chlldren continue to work extremely hard as the year comes to a close.

We have spent some time looking at the piece of art created by the Japanese artist Hokusai called 'The Great Wave Off Kanagawa'. The children looked really carefully at the dif ferent layers of the piece of art and used a variety of mediums to recreate their own version. The children should be really proud of their work produced as Mrs White has selected some of the recreations to be hung in the off ice. If you would like a copy of your child's painting, just let me know.

In maths this week, we have been adding fractions and the children really challenged themselves when they moved on to adding fractions with dif ferent denominators. They have also spent some time looking at how to use a compass and took part in a treasure hunt where they found real treasure hidden within the school grounds.

In literacy, we have recapped the structure and features of a set of instructions and they produced a piece of 'big-writ ing', writ ing a set of instructions informing someone how to capture a mythical creature that they had created.

The children have also worked extremely hard to f inish the mosaic that we will have created to give to Moreton School when they come for the camping evening where we will be swapping mosaics with the Year 3 class at Moreton.

Next week, we will be creating a weather station with Kestrels. Part of this weather station will involve a barometer. Therefore, I ask if you could send in a clean, used tin can for Wednesday. Thank you!

There have been many special events going on in school in the last few weeks. Last Wednesday we were lucky enough to have a whole school Magna Carta day and we started the day off with a very informative assembly from our chair of governors Mrs Atherton. The children really had a great day and learnt about why the Magna Carta has a particular relevance to us.

The last few days we have been tackling some really tricky maths and are beginning to learn how to add fractions, including those that end in a mixed number. We have also then been building upon this by adding fractions with dif ferent denominators. I have been really impressed with how the children have coped with this and seeing all of their knowledge being applied. In literacy we have been continuing to collate our ideas for our mystery stories. We have brainstormed and generated many examples of red herrings, clif f hangers and clues to name but a few, so we have a big bank to come back to when we come to write them.

Also just a reminder for all children to bring in a clean, used tin can for Wednesday next week to make our barometers. Thank you!

I would also like to express my thanks to those parents that attended the Forest School session on

Wednesday evening. It was received very well and all the adults found it very informative.
