Lucile Bogue and others established Yampa Valley College on Woodchuck Hill, opening for classes in 1962. YVC eventually closed, but in 1981 Steamboat Springs Chamber Executive Director Bill Hill led a campaign to save the campus and restore a college for the town. Despite a drought year, residents of School District RE-2 voted two-to-one for joining the Colorado Mountain College District.
Bill called it “a college too tough to die.” With assistance from Billy Kidd, the campus developed the country’s fi rst degree in ski business. The original campus buildings have been replaced, most recently with the new Academic Center, opened in 2012.
After leading the campaign for Steamboat Springs to join CMC, Bill Hill helped to start the Ski Business program,
then taught business at CMC for 16 years.

JIMMY WESTLAKE, RETIRING PROFESSORColorado Mountain College, Steamboat has been honored to have Jimmy Westlake as our Professor of Physical Science for nearly 20 years.
Under Jimmy’s leadership, CMC’s astronomy programs have increased to offer a series of 6 courses that have touched thousands of lives. In addition, he has been instrumental in growing the engineering department with physics and mathematics courses. Countless students have been inspired to pursue advanced degrees in astronomy, physics and astrophysics at institutions such as Colorado School of Mines, Colorado University Boulder, and University of Hawaii.
Jimmy started CMC’s Sky Club in Fall of 1998 and Screamboat began haunting the third floor of the Monson building, entertaining approximately 120 students and community members who paid 50 cents each to tour. Now CMC’s Screamboat boasts between 600-1000 paying attendees each year. A scholarship was started 10+ years ago to provide funds for incoming freshmen majoring in physical science or engineering. Additionally, Sky Club has taken trips to Mauna Kea, HI, Mt Wilson, CA, and University of Texas, McDonald Observitory for hands-on experiential learning trips to see some of the West’s largest telescopes.
Jimmy’s involvement in the community with star gazing nights, Celestial News in the Steamboat Pilot, and Cosmic Moments broadcasted on KFMU for 10+ years, have touched everyone in the community. Thank you, Jimmy ***
