A town with true Western heritage:Long before pioneer settlers trickled in, nomadic Ute and Arapahoe Native Americans were using the Yampa Valley as a summer home for hunting, fishing and enjoying the medicinal hot springs. French trappers traveling through in the 1800’s dubbed the area “Steamboat Springs” because of a local mineral spring that whistled and chugged like a steamboat. When James Harvey Crawford, Steamboat Springs’ first permanent settler, arrived in 1875, he opened a post office and gave us our official name.Steamboat Springs began flourishing as an agricultural and ranching center. Its cowboy heritage thrived with it as legendary outlaws and cowboys passed through, including Butch Cassidy and Kit Carson. Newspaper mentions of rodeos date back to 1898; no local event was complete without a rodeo. Our rodeo tradition continues with the summer ProRodeo series held in our modern arena. Steamboat’s ranching heritage shows on our main street (originally built widely enough to accommodate cattle drives; we still hold a traditional cattle drive down our main street as part of our Fourth of July festivities).

Steamboat Springs, nestled in the Yampa Valley in Colorado’s Northwest mountains, may be the most beautiful and welcoming community you will ever visit. Two wilderness areas, five state parks and unlimited National Forest allow you to experience our natural beauty while taking advantage of endless outdoor recreation possibilities. Expect strangers to greet you on the street with a friendly smile or a warm hello. The people are so friendly - you'll feel you've come home as soon as you arrive.

Steamboat Springs offers the wonderful ambience of small town life combined with all the amenities of a much larger city:

• A summer long music festival, housed in the “Strings tent” at the intersection of Pinegrove Road and Mt. Werner Road. Enjoy nearly fifty ensembles and chamber orchestral concerts, jazz, bluegrass, country, world music and theater productions, youth and family concerts. Plus the free “Music on the Green” performances in the lovely Yampa River Botanic Park.

• The Steamboat Springs free outdoor concert series features

performers such as Bela Fleck, John Mayall, Los Lobos, Michele Shocked, Leon Russell and many more well-known names.

• The Steamboat Springs Arts Council, housed in our historic train depot, is home to a gallery of unique works. Art shows at the Depot change every two months and showcase sculptures, paintings, photography, ceramics and more created by local, regional and national talent.

• Our Emerald City Opera brings professional caliber classical opera and traditional musical theater to the Yampa Valley with performances by world-class and Yampa Valley artists.

• About 500 book lovers from across the country gather annually to meet famed authors during our summer weekend-long Literary Sojourn. Past celebrity speakers include Pulitzer Prize winner E. Annie Proulx, best-selling mystery authors Robert Crais, Tony Hillerman and Michael Connelly, and Oprah’s Book Club authors Chris Bohjalian, Jacquelyn Mitchard and Andre Dubus III.

• Eighty-three restaurants offer everything from cozy coffeehouse fare to very fine cuisine.

• Four golf courses, including a championship course designed by Keith Foster.
