STEAM Ahead: Vol. 2 STEAM Newspaper Club November 2017 What is Red Ribbon Week? Red Ribbon week is a drug free campaign that was established in 1980. Their mission is “to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.” This years theme for red Ribbon Week was “Your Future is Key So Stay Drug Free!” Red Ribbon Week is not only in missouri, but it is also all of AMERICA! STEAM’s Red Ribbon themed days: Tuesday-Everyone wear RED Shirts Wednesday-Leave drugs in the past, “throwback day” Thursday-Dress to impress, Picture day Friday- Nerds are cool drugs are not, dress like nerds Monday-Put Drugs to rest, Wear pj’s Tuesday- Don’t get into a hairy situation, Crazy hair day PUT DRUGS TO REST By: CJ Gregory III What is the first thing that comes your mind when I say, SLEEP? What? Pillow or blanket or PAJAMAS!!!! On October 23rd STEAM Academy had a PJ Day. There pajamas, onesies, and even shorts and everyone was so colorful. Most of the students wore pajamas. Surprisingly, most of the teachers wore pajamas too! I interviewed Morgan Baker and this was her response- Q.What did you wear? A. I wore an owl onesie. Q. What do your pajamas tell about you? A. I like vibrant colors, because my pajamas had colors. Q. Do you like the idea of pajama day and why? A. Yes I do, because our uniforms aren’t really comfortable. Q. Do you think we should have pajama day every Monday? A. Yes, because Mondays aren’t the best days of the week. Q. Does wearing pajamas make you sleepy? A. By the way, these photos might make you sleepy. :) 7th Grade Pod Door Decorating Contest By: Ellie Werleman The 7th grade pod focused on an Alice in Wonderland theme. They did this because of the looking through the keyhole. The theme for Red Ribbon Week reminded 7th grade students of a keyhole that Alice looked through. Who did what in the pod? Ms. Sosa΅s advisory did The Queen of Hearts and The Mad Hatter . Mr. Hiebert had Alice for their door. Fantastic art work, 7th grade pod! A: 6th grade ELA/SS Q: How long have you been teaching? A: 20 years in education and 11 years as a teacher Q: Who/what inspired you to teach? A: My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Minner Q: Where did you teach before this? A: Holman Elementary Q: Favorite color? A: Purple Q: Favorite food? A: Italian Q: Favorite sport? A: Basketball (spectator) Q: Biggest pet peeve? A: People talking while I’m talking Q: What is something that most people don’t know about you? A: I grew up in Arkansas 6t Grad Po Decoratin The 6th grade pod theme was “The Road to Success.” They had keys with the students names on it, with colleges on the back, roads that led into the classrooms, and locks with sayings that help kids be successful. New PBL’S for Sixth Grade

● Math Class

In Math class the new PBL is “Planning a Thanksgiving Feast”. The students are learning how to do unit rates. Students are working with their classmates trying to find out what food they are doing. Also they are working with different brands of food in a grocery Ad.

● Science Class

In Science class the new PBL is “Biochemistry”. Students in Science class are learning about what Biochemistry is, who uses Biochemistry and where people use Biochemistry.

● ELA/S.S Class

In ELA/S.S class students are still working on “The most Amazing Race” Folktales and continents around the world.

By:Mia Maxedon   Ms. Smith Q: WHat grade do you teach? A: 6th and 7th, but mainly 7th  Q: What subject do you teach? A: Science.  Q: What is your biggest pet peeve? A: students asking a question on a question before reading the question.  Q: What is your favorite sport? A: Cheerleading.  Q: What school did you come from? A: Hazelwood.  Dr. Ries Q: How long have you been a principal or teaching? A: In education for 19 years, Principal for 2 years, Elementary district science Coach for for 2 years, and a teacher for 15 years.  Q: What school WEre you at prior to STEAM? A: Probe, Prior to that ALL 17 Elementary schools, and Prior to that Combs Elementary  Q: Who or what inspired you to start teaching or being a principal? A: My 5th grade teacher.  Q: What is your favorite sport? A: Any sport my Kids are playing.  Q:What is your favorite food? A: I like all foods.

Steam’s rst ever red ribbon week was the breakout event of the school year. We a  got a lot of dress down days and we a  looked awesome with our spirit wear. my favorite time we did spirit wear was when we did throwback day. As you know, each grade dressed up as a character from their decade of their grade. (60s from 6th, 70s from 7th, and 80s from 8th). There were some great pictures. 

 This picture you see here includes students daniel mian, cooper b., grace ford, samara wheeler, anijah heard, jamerah mcnichols, a en gates and mr. christopher gardner, our 6th grade life science teacher. This picture took place in 2nd block. 

 This picture you see here include students gabby dumas scott, e ie werleman, kortland ware, eunice munyori, ashley stayed, mariana jones, and mrs. hilary licata, our 6th grade accelerated math teacher.
