Installations performed by an airframe manufacturer are usually approved under their Type Certificate (TC) or Production Certificate (PC). Installations in the field must be conducted under a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). Before quoting an autopilot installation in a certified aircraft there are several things to consider about the aircraft that may affect the autopilot STC. These things need to be investigated thoroughly before agreeing to do an installation and placing the order for the system. STC’s usually only cover standard configuration aircraft unless specifically stated otherwise in the Supplemental Type Certificate. If there are exceptions to the STC it will so state in the Supplemental Type Certificate and normally list the STC number of the approved modification. Some of the airframe modifications that may effect autopilot STC’s are STOL kits, engine conversions, extended range fuel tanks (internal and external), floats, skis, tail wheel conversions, wing tip mods, strakes, turbulators, gap seals, root fairings, cabin modifications, vortex generator, and gross weight changes. The dealer STC directory contains a list of FAA approvals of S-TEC autopilots available for installation by aircraft. Footnotes are listed under the applicable kit or ST numbers to aid the dealer with questions such as the use of approved aircraft modifications with the specific STC in question. Other things covered in the footnotes include aircraft serial number effectivity, additional parts that may be required outside the hardware kit such as bell cranks or trim cables, and a host of other things that could effect the installation itself. We strongly recommend reviewing these notes anytime you are quoting a system. If the footnotes are not clear or you have a specific question that is not addressed, please call the Sales Department and we will make every effort possible to ensure all of your questions are answered thoroughly. IMPORTANT ORDERING INFORMATION 1. Aircraft are certified by model designation. Autopilots are certified for use with specific model aircraft. The year the aircraft was sold is not relevant and cannot be used to order an autopilot. Be sure to obtain the exact model designation of the customer's aircraft as it appears on the aircraft registration certificate. 2. Obtain the aircraft serial number. Many autopilot kits are limited in their application to certain serial numbers of a particular model. 3. Obtain the aircraft model voltage. 4. Obtain the aircraft registration number. 5. GENERAL INFORMATION
Autopilot installations are defined as a major airframe modification and they must be FAA approved for certified aircraft.

HOW TO ORDER
1. Specify the autopilot model and kit designation (e.g. System 60-2, ST-010, ST-173-40).
2. Specify model - be specific, V35B, 182Q, 35-C33, etc. 3. Specify aircraft serial number. 4. Specify aircraft voltage. 5. Specify aircraft registration number 6. Specify type of heading system to be used with the autopilot, if any. 7. Specify any options desired (Autotrim, Altitude Selector/Alerter, Yaw Damper, etc.) 8. When updating a System 60-1 (roll only) to a System 60-2 (roll and pitch), System 40 (roll
only) to a System 50 (roll and pitch) or 60PSS (pitch only) to a System 60-2 (roll and pitch), call S-TEC Sales (800/USA-S-TEC) for a Return Authorization (RA) to convert the programmer.
9. When adding Optional Automatic Electric Trim to an existing S-TEC autopilot, please specify autopilot model.
10. When adding Optional Automatic Electric Trim to a System 55, 55X, 60-2 or 60PSS, call S-TEC Sales (800/USA-S-TEC) for a Return Authorization (RA) to update the Programmer Computer / Pitch Flight Guidance Computer to add Trim.
11. When ordering a Yaw Damper System, please advise if it is being installed with an S-TEC System or another autopilot system.
WHAT TO DO IF DESIRED MODEL IS NOT APPROVED
New STC projects are constantly in process. Aircraft models are selected to allow access to the highest volume market for a particular class system, as early as possible. However, all models are re-evaluated for demand in the field, on a continuing basis. If a model is not covered, please call S-TEC Sales - we may have the model scheduled or the information may be significant in a decision to move a particular model up in the STC priority.
SERIAL NUMBER LIMITING
When an installation kit is limited to a specific group of serial numbers within a model designation, the reason is usually structural considerations that require a different physical installation. Occasionally, all of the installation hardware is different. Aircraft are listed in the directory by model with a voltage noted. The autopilot system is approved by aircraft model and system voltage.
