THERE'S MORE GOING ONTHAN MEETS THE EYE!
Take a stroll down
Monson Road and
chances are
that Flowers@
Colonnade will catch your
attention. The bright
and bold shop front
with its mass of fl oral
decorations is hard to
miss, but it's not only a top
class fl orist. Step inside and
you'll also fi nd a lovely café – a new
venture from owner Sharon Wood.Sharon tell us that she always
wanted to open a cafe to complement
her thriving fl orist business. And the
two sides to the Colonnade business
sit very well together. The bold theme
continues with the styling of the menu
cards and the decor of the café area.
The cakes and bakes are freshly made
and served on stylish plates. There are
amazing treats to try, from a triple layer
chocolate cake to the house speciality –
baked waffl es with hot cherries!
FLOWER SCHOOLAnd there are even more strings to the
bow at Colonnade. Sharon is a Chelsea
Flower Show Gold Medal winner and
is qualifi ed to teach fl oristry. She runs
the Colonnade Flower School at the
shop and, once a month, she holds an
evening workshop where students of
all abilities can learn to create fl oral
decorations in a friendly atmosphere.
The workshops are suitable for anyone
who wants to learn simple skills or for
a group of friends who might want to
try out a new activity together,
perhaps for a birthday or hen party.
Wine, coffee and cake is served and
every student gets to take home a
beautiful fl oral creation at the
end of the evening.
Coming up in the
autumn is a 6-week
Introduction to
Floristry course for
the more serious
learner, covering
hand-tied bouquets,
table arrangements, cut
fl owers and more. Book early to
secure your place... and don't forget
to pop in for coffee!

the social network
Since 1995, social
networking has fast become
the most popular means of
communication among
the younger (and sometimes not-so-
younger) generation. Not only does
this ever growing cyber world connect
families and friends but it is also a
way in which businesses can grow
and become widely recognised.
COMMUNICATION REVOLUTIONWith the overwhelming amount of
sites including Twitter, Facebook,
Bebo and Myspace, it can sometimes
be confusing to decide which one
is best, which one our families and
friends have, which have the latest
updates on events, or maybe which
one could best promote a business?
With so many options to choose
from are we becoming more reliant
on social networking as a main means
of communication? Staying In and
Going Out spoke to two local people
who use social networking sites both
for friendship and to promote their
business. Here's what they had to say.
JADE'S STORY...Jade Pluck runs her own business
as a virtual assistant for coaches and
BY... HOPE BROWN
trainers. Previously a personal
assistant, she started her own
business, Virtually Anywhere,
after the birth of her son.
The business is an innovative
idea which supports people
in completing tasks they so
desperately would like to get done
but may not have the time to do.
Jade says that she believes that
Twitter is a fantastic tool with
many benefi ts, such as:
being able to fi nd and follow
key infl uencers and potential
clients by using sites such as www.
wefollow.com. Search for specifi c
groups such as "Coaching" or
"Virtual Assistants"
 communicate with your
followers with general
conversation, so you get to know
each other
 fi nd useful information via
blogs and links, and you can
retweet them for your followers
link people from Twitter to pages
on your website, such as you sign up
box for your newsletter, therefore
giving your website exposure
As anyone knows networking is
key to any business success, you may
want to fi nd new clients or services
you can recommend to existing
clients and Twitter really does play an
important part of this. If you attend
a networking group ask the following
questions:
Is the networking group on Twitter,
if so follow them as you may get
useful updates such as meeting dates
Is there a "hash tag" for the group –
this is common area for that group or
subject, where everyone can see who
is talking about it
 Ask fellow members for their
Twitter name, follow each other and
start talking!
As you can see, the main factors
are getting to know your clients,
showcasing your expertise and giving
value, and all of these will get your
business name out there and gain
new clients.
Reach Jade via her website at
www.virtually-anywhere.co.uk
PAUL'S STORY...Paul, the owner of a photography
studio, uses social networking to
promote his business, and why
wouldn't you when, as he says, "you've
got access to everything you want".
Paul, previously a builder, was
inspired to venture into this new
career after attempting to fi nd a
studio to shoot a picture of his
saxophone. Finding nowhere to do
this, he saw the opportunity to open
his own studio, which he now hires
out to individuals and professionals,
renting out the space, infi nity cave,
lights, make-up and changing
room areas, all for just £25/hour.

Using sites such

he found that they are

SPA VALLEY RAILWAY: STEAMING THROUGH THE 40SFrom Friday 17th to Sunday 19th
of June, experience the 1940s at
every station, with jive dancing,
a fl ypast memorial fl ight, 1940s
vehicles and, of course, dressing
up in period costumes.
It's the time of year that dads
get thoroughly spoilt. I think
we can speak for most men
by saying that a good dinner
never goes amiss, so why not take
dad out for a meal on Fathers'
Day? Here are two
great ideas if you're
looking for
something
slightly
different...
SURPRISEAT SMITH & WESTERN!A great place to
take the family
on any occasion,
Smith & Western
in the old West
Station is a perfect
place for a Fathers'
Day gathering.
The spacious
restaurant provides
plenty of room for
youngsters and
there are large
tables if you're thinking of bringing
the extended family. The service is
always friendly and polite but above
all, it really is fun! Children love the
Wild West theme and there's a special
children's menu with perfect-sized
portions for tiny tummies.
And for the larger appetite (that
would be dad), there's a choice of
ribs, burgers, steaks – all manly,
cowboy stuff! And to make sure
there's defi nitely a celebration going
on, every dad gets a free surprise
gift on Father's Day... so book now
and make sure you don't miss out
on a feast of fun in the good 'ole
Wild West.

KIRTHON: THE BEST INDIAN IN TOWN?
Another top treat for the well-
deserving dad has got to be
an Indian meal and a
pint of larger, surely?
So if dad has been
entertaining the
kids all day, why
not get a babysitter
and take him
out to a fabulous
Indian restaurant
for a well-earned
evening of
relaxation? Kirthon in The
Pantiles is said by
some to be the best
Indian restaurant
in town. All its
chefs are trained
in the spice-rich
city of Sylhet, in
north-eastern Bangladesh. There are
traditional Indian and massala dishes,
biryani and balti dishes and even Thai
food on the menu, so there's a wide
selection for all tastes. And if there's
something you fancy that's not
on the menu, then the chef
may be able to make it for you. Kirthon also offers a take-
away service, so if babysitters aren't
an option, there's nothing
wrong with a cosy night in to
round off a busy day...
