other things, but it is just as important for you to be

smart about safety so that you can truly enjoy your

college experience.

To Parents

Whether you are sending your first child off to college

or a younger child, treat every child’s experience as if

it is your first child’s experience…Times have

changed. Schools adopt new policies, build new

buildings, and add new staff… You get the picture.

School Shootings

There have been 52 school shootings in 2015 at all levels of

education – daycare, elementary, middle school, high school and

college/university – …Of the 52 school shootings, 21 were at the

college/university level.

students don't lock their dorm room door.

groups and more use hazing as an initiation ritual…

paddling, beating, and drinking excessive amounts of

alcohol.

According to the Mayo Clinic, foodborne illnesses,

caused by eating contaminated foods contain

infectious organisms such as bacteria, viruses or

parasites or their toxins.

Drink

A CDC Vital Signs report found that “…nearly 14

million U.S. women binge drink about three times a

month, and consume an average of six drinks per

binge.”

The University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri

has been in the spotlight because of how

administrators handled black students’ concerns

regarding racial issues and how those issues were

handled.

Security at Large Gatherings

The National Football League (NFL) is discouraging fans from bringing bags of any kind to its stadiums and security officers have a presence at the college football game at UCLA and a cricket match at Dodgers Stadium.

Campus Visits

Campus Visits

Tour the facility, visit the classes, talk with teachers

and administrators, taste the food, see the town and

get a general feel for what life will be like on the

campuses of the schools on your short list.

Be Aware

Make a note of transportation options such as buses, trains,

bike paths, walking trails and any construction obstacles.

Find out if there is a taxi service or alternative

transportation services like Uber or Lyft. Pay particular

attention to walking trails to and from campus for lighting,

bushes, dark allies and any other concerns. Drive around

during the day and then take a second driving tour at night.
