Dear Parents and Guardians, Week 9 was a busy one – lots of excitement for Hallowe’en and a terrific Hallowe’en day (so much spirit shown by students and staff alike), teachers are finalizing marks for mid-semester report cards, teams are making playoff runs, IGiveAShirt and the metal/e-waste recycling programs were completed, and Movember started. The new term starts on Tuesday. This doesn’t affect most students but it will affect students taking Careers/Civics. At that point, on Wednesday, they switch classes. So, if your teen was taking Civics, on Wednesday, they switch to Careers, and vice versa if they took Careers in term 1. We would like to wish the Hindu members of the Bear Creek Community a very festive Diwali, on November 6 th . This very popular Hindu festival is celebrated for five continuous days and is known as the Festival of Lights. During this festival, lights are lit inside and outside followers’ homes. Lighting the lamp is a symbolic representation of “illuminating the lamp of knowledge within us.” It is a time to celebrate new beginnings, the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. Families visit their places of worship and spend time with family and friends. Customs and traditions vary based on geographic region, culture, and language. Dear Parents and Guardians,
Week 9 was a busy one – lots of excitement for Hallowe’en and a terrific Hallowe’en day (so much spirit
shown by students and staff alike), teachers are finalizing marks for mid-semester report cards, teams are
making playoff runs, IGiveAShirt and the metal/e-waste recycling programs were completed, and Movember
started.
The new term starts on Tuesday. This doesn’t affect most students but it will affect students taking
Careers/Civics. At that point, on Wednesday, they switch classes. So, if your teen was taking Civics, on
Wednesday, they switch to Careers, and vice versa if they took Careers in term 1.
We would like to wish the Hindu members of the Bear Creek Community a very festive Diwali, on November
6th. This very popular Hindu festival is celebrated for five continuous days and is known as the Festival of
Lights. During this festival, lights are lit inside and outside followers’ homes. Lighting the lamp is a symbolic
representation of “illuminating the lamp of knowledge within us.” It is a time to celebrate new beginnings, the
triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. Families visit their places of worship and spend time with
family and friends. Customs and traditions vary based on geographic region, culture, and language.

Student Hallowe’en
I would like to wish the Hindu Members of the Bear Creek community a very healthy and prosperous New
Year, on November 7th. The Hindu calendar uses both lunar and solar calculations and therefore the celebration
of the New Year differs greatly from the Gregorian calendar. New Year celebration dates differ throughout the
regions, but most often occur at the same time as the beginning of Spring.
I would like to wish the members of the Bear Creek community who observe Jainism, a very festive Diwali/
Lord Mahavir Nirvana, on November 7th. Also known as “the Festival of Light,” this date marks the day when
Lord Mahavir attained salvation. It is celebrated with worship in the morning and illumination at night.
I would like to wish members of the Bear Creek Sikh community, a happy Bandhi Chhor Divas, on November
7th. Bandi Chhor Divas means “the day of the prisoners’ release.” This day commemorates the return of Guru
Hargobind Ji, the sixth Guru, to the holy city Amritsar after he negotiated the release of himself and 52 princes
who were being held for political reasons. Sikhs in Amritsar illuminate the city on the day of Diwali, which
marks the date of his release.
I would like to wish the members of the Bear Creek community who observe Jainism, a very festive New Year/
Enlightenment of Guatamswami. Jains begin the New Year with a glorification of Lord Guatamswami. Jains
visit temple in the morning and offer prayers. Some devotees of Jainism fast for 3 days, including the New Year
day. Traditions include visiting friends, family and neighbours, feasts, offering gifts, fireworks, and lighting up
the home.
I would like to wish members of the Baha’i faith, in the Bear Creek community, a very festive Birth of the Bab, on
November 9th. This day celebrates the birthday of Siyyid Alí Muhammád, who declared himself the Báb, or “Gate
of God,” in 1844.
I am always open to suggestions and comments, so please contact me at [email protected] if you have
something on your mind.
