The second the food bowl hits the ground be ready to get in-between your dog and the bowl. When she starts to lean forward or stands up take a confident, but little baby step in toward her. Once she maintains the sit for a second, say “break” and get out of the way. Note: Concentrate on your timing and what your dog is telling you. As always, make sure your dog is food motivated. Once your dog breaks through the concept stage, you will be off to the races! Now you can use that claiming presence, referred to as spatial pressure, to reinforce a longer stay. We will talk about duration work, working up to higher level distractions, distance work as well as layering spatial pressure with other modes of communication in future posts. Note: Refer back to last week’s notes on sit at the food bowl before continuing. The second the food bowl hits the ground be ready to get in-between your dog and the bowl.
