Status of Recent Code Actions

• Recently ASME Section XI board approvedR i d A di I I 3200– Revised Appendix I, I-3200• Added new paragraph (d) to I-3200, “Near side (same side) and far

side (opposite side) of the weld are in relationship to the weld centerline and search unit location as depicted in Figure I-3200-1.

• Added Figure I-3200-1 (see next slide)

– Revised Appendix VIII VIII-3120(b)Revised Appendix VIII, VIII 3120(b)• Provided practical requirements for ultrasonic sizing of axial flaws

with techniques qualified on circumferential flawsAll h t ti l i bl t t f– Allows changes to essential variables to compensate for component geometry

– Reflects the real world implementation

New and On-going Code Actions

• Record 12-1471 – Revise Non-mandatory Appendix M; Applying Mathematical Modeling to Ultrasonic ExaminationApplying Mathematical Modeling to Ultrasonic Examination of Pressure Retaining Components– Section XI is adding “boiler plate statements” to dictate use rules for

non-mandatory appendicesnon mandatory appendices– App M, “This appendix provides guidance, however if used, all

provisions of the appendix are mandatory”– Mark Dennis is revising the appendices such that this use statementMark Dennis is revising the appendices such that this use statement

will not be impractical to implement• Requiring only one method of Model verification• Allowing acceptance of a model when physical trials within ± 1Allowing acceptance of a model when physical trials within ± 1

inch or 10% of the maximum metal path agree with model.– This is consistent with Supplement 5 requirements

• Approved to go out for Standards Committee letter ballot in May 2013

New and On-going Code Actions

• Record 13-301 – Revision to Appendix III, incorporating Cast Austenitic Stainless Steel UT examination guidanceCast Austenitic Stainless Steel UT examination guidance– Codifies newly approved Code Case N-824– Adds a new Supplement 2 to App III specific to CASSpp pp p– Modifies main body of App III and Supplement 1, as

necessary, to make room for Supplement 2– Likely to go to closed ballot for Sect XI Standards

Committee in August

New and On-going Code Actions

• Guidelines for Creating a Technical Justification for UT Equipment ChangesEquipment Changes– Currently under development at Task Group Appendix VIII for use

with Code Case N-780– Contains required aspects of a TJ for equipment changes– Contains required aspects of a TJ for equipment changes– Similar guidance will follow for a TJ accompanying use of a site

New and On-going Code Actions

• A new Code Case is being developed for use of Excavation and Weld Repair (EWR)and Weld Repair (EWR)– Will have an examination component, which may result in the need

for a new or modified Appendix VIII Supplement– Currently proposing a “floating” 1/3 t volume centered on bottom ofCurrently proposing a floating 1/3 t volume, centered on bottom of

repair area– Welding aspects being developed by WRTC– Current and future proposed MRP Inspection TAC projects areCurrent and future proposed MRP Inspection TAC projects are

looking at the capabilities for NDE on such a repair

Future Code Actions

• SG-NDE has taken an action to define requirements for site specific mockups in Appendix VIIIspecific mockups in Appendix VIII– Draft proposal will be based upon PDI SSMU Requirements– Consider putting this in main body of Appendix VIII, in case it’s

needed for WOL or other applications

• Modified RMSE acceptance criterion for ID depth sizing on large bore thick PWR piping soon to be proposedlarge bore, thick PWR piping soon to be proposed– MRP has developed technical basis for change

• Based on comparison with original technical basis, which used BWR i i fl t id ti f thi k hBWR piping case – reflects consideration for thickness change

• Also based upon extensive probabilistic fracture mechanics• Draft Code Case and supporting technical basis will be out before

Future Code Actions

• Define PDA roles and responsibilities in Appendix VIIII (C l L ti l i )– In-process (Carl Latiolais)

• Revise VIII-4000 for equipment substitution– Update and clarify comparison parameters for digital technologyUpda e a d c a y co pa so pa a e e s o d g a ec o ogy

• Current Code guidance is for replacement of analog instruments and may not be applicable or usable for most modern instruments

Future Code Actions

• Revisit how essential variables and their uses are defined in Appendix VIIIin Appendix VIII– Revision to VIII-4000 for equipment substitution– Should include phased array variables– Should dovetail with PDI-UT-10 approach
