New HIPPI Management - 1New HIPPI Management - 1
In 2006 the CERN AB Department needs to replace 6 Group Leaders out of 9.
Roland Garoby has been convinced to accept the responsibility of the BDI (=Beam Diagnostics and Instrumentation) Group (~85 people, LHC on sight…), effective September 1st.
To reduce his workload, from July 1st RG passed to MV the role of HIPPI coordinator and the responsibility for the CERN contribution to HIPPI-related work (R&D for Linac4).
However, RG remains involved in CERN studies for future accelerators (PAF Working Group) and keeps control of the SPL work.

HIPPI ProgressHIPPI Progress
- 2nd 2005 Quarterly Report finished on Aug. 30th (46 pages)
- Work Package meetings going on as foreseen.
- 10 HIPPI papers (Conf and Doc categories) published so far in 2005 (less than last year because only PAC Conference). – Many reminders needed to keep the discipline…
- 3 positions opened in 2005 (GSI, started – CEA, candidate selected, waiting for paperwork – IAP, published).
- The Annual HIPPI Meeting will take place in Abingdon (near Oxford, UK), organised by RAL, on Sept. 28-29-30.

WP2 – MembersWP2 – Members
Few staff problems:- At RAL, F. Gerigk left (to join CERN…), replaced in WP2 by G.
Bellodi, who will leave end of September (for CERN…). New CARE Recruitment (C. Plostinar) will take over.
- At LPSC-Grenoble, no way to find a PhD student for the SCL studies. J.M. De Conto (WP Coordinator) leaves the lab for the University (will continue work, but Univ. Grenoble is not a partner of HIPPI). His group at LPSC now with M. Baylac (will be Scientific Coordinator for CNRS-HIPPI ?).
An important opportunity:• INFN-Naples has a long experience in Side Coupled Linac Structures
(for medical applications – TERA).• They were present to the WP2 meeting in June and are willing to
participate to the HIPPI work. They would be welcome, because in particular the SCL work is late and understaffed (see above).
• Some funding has been already asked by Naples to INFN for 2006.• Is it possible for them to join officially HIPPI as a full partner (of
course, without receiving contributions from the EU ?)

Common work INFN-Mi / CEA to understand the large values of Lorenz Force Detuning coefficients measured on test cavity A (needed to dimension tuner) extensive modeling of supporting systems allowed to trace it back to the reduced constraint from the support LFD as in the “free” case.
Design of test cavity B terminated.Tendering for cavity construction in preparation, order expected for November 05.
Construction of klystron for high power test stand should start in September.
Modulator being prepared.

WP4 – Chopping WP4 – Chopping
Chopper structure components at CERN finally delivered from workshop (~1 year late!), now being cleaned and assembled.
To save time, decided to pass over the pre-testing phase and go directly to the final layout.
New driver design based on MOSFET’s gives promising results.
At RAL, complete redesign of the chopper lineArchitecture of the “slow pulse” driver has been redefined, and tests are in preparation
