Current statusSummary
Tevatron back to pre-shutdown luminosity, but still ~6 month late on expected luminosity profile
The CDF detector is almost out of the commissioning phase and is taking data of good quality The silicon systems are mostly fixed L2 trigger is greatly improved and adequate to expected
luminosity, in particular SVT works beautifully
We have a good chance of collecting 100-200 pb-1 by Summer 2002 and possibly present first results on xs and (maybe) sin(2) on a similar time scale.
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Future upgrades
Fermilab is pursuing the goal of accumulating 15 fb-1 by FY 2008
- Increase the number of protons on the antiproton target
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Future upgrades CDF needs to be upgraded to match this laboratory plan
Run IIA: Lmax ~ 2x1032 and total luminosity 2 fb-1
Run IIB: L max ~ 5x1032 and total luminosity 15 fb-1
CDF guidelines: Implement minimum set of upgrades needed to preserve the current functionality at high luminosity Upgrades will be installed in a 6-7 month period at beginning of 2005
Major project deadlines: October 2001: Run IIB upgrade TDR distributed November 2001: upgrades discussed with PAC December 2001: upgrades reviewed by Technical Committee April 2002: PAC meeting After PAC: DOE baseline review
- Need MOU’s before this meeting
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Run IIb Run IIB TDR completed – Included are:
SVX IIB: new silicon tracker ($ 11.2 M) Scintillator based preshower ($ 0.76 M) Replacement of CSX ($ 0.17 M) EM calorimeter timing ($ 0.40 M) Event builder/L3 trigger upgrade ($ 0.5 M) Track trigger upgrade ($ 0.62 M) Other trigger/DAQ upgrades (???)
Need access to the detector - Schedule constrained by 2005 shutdown date
Do NOT need access to detector so can be on a longer timescale
Total with 30-50% contingency $ 13.7 M
TDR available at http://ncdf12.fnal.gov/PAC/pac_Nov_01.html
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Run IIB PAC review November 2, 2001
Funding available from DOE 2002-2005 is $ 9.1 M Recommendations:
- Should focus on upgrades that are critical for the Higgs search
- Simplify the silicon detectors
- Concentrate mostly on silicon
- Assign 40% contingency to all silicon items
- Critical startup work for silicon detector approved: SVX4 production Silicon sensor prototypes Hybrid/custom cable production Stave mechanical/electrical prototype
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Run IIB CDF acknowledges the limitations in funding, but considers
the proposed limitations in scope hard to accept since: They ignore other major parts of our physics program:
- Supersymmetry, technicolor, extra dimensions and other exotic physics seaches
- B physics beyond the run IIa
Given the current uncertainties on the final integrated luminosity, improvements of the detector beyond the silicon increase our probability of major discoveries.
Need good foreign support to expand the upgrade beyond the silicon detector replacement. Great time to join CDF! Japan ~ $ 2.5 M for
- silicon sensors
- preshower PMT’s
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Run IIB Lab Technical review December 4, 2001
Reduced list of requests to the Lab to fit in the budget guideline- Silicon replacement (*)
- Preshower (*)
- Event builder upgrade These items have received the full support of the review committee
Some upgrades are naturally dealt with as maintenance- L3 computers
- CSX replacement (*)
CDF still supports the need for the remaining upgrades and is actively looking for funding out of the Laboratory:
- University grants, NFS grants, foreign funds Upgrades in this category are:
- CEM timing (*)
- L1 track trigger upgrades
- Other Trigger/DAQ upgrades
(*) indicates interest from some Italian group
http://ncdf12.fnal.gov/trc/Trc_Dec_01.htm
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Run IIB The Italian interests and activities for run IIB are still in the process of
coming together Clear interest for silicon, preshower, CEM timing and CSX Growing interest to some trigger upgrades in the future
No urgency for funding in 2002 except for our contribution to SVX4 chip production silicon Power Supply R&D Preradiator R&D SJ on CSX scintillator
A funding profile for 2002-2004 should be defined subject to further verification based on the evolution of the interest of Italian physicists and groups, and of the review and funding process in the USA
More details on individual projects follow
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Run IIB Silicon Physics: B, Higgs/Exotic searches, QCD, ….. Status of approval:

Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Other Run IIB projects
New preshower Physics: Higgs (jet resolution), separation, electron ID
Status of approval (December 2001):- Endorsed by technical review committee. Expect approval at April
PAC
R&D, PMT Power supplies, fibers, installation May have a more significant part on detector construction
- Cost: 20 kEuro (R&D) + 130 kEuro production
- Funding year: 2002 (R&D), 2003-2004 production
- Foreign Institutions: Argonne, Tsukuba, Michigan State
- Italian Institutions on project: Pisa (with members from Siena), LNF
- Physicists on project: Lami et al.
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
CEM timing
Motivation: Reduce cosmic ray
background Critical for SUSY
searches which rely on photons
Our eeET had 2 EM object missing timing information!
SM Background estimate of 10-6
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
CEM timing Examples:
EWK physics: WZ production SUSY searches: N2 G
~~
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Other Run IIB projects
EM Calorimeter timing Physics: photon purity (SUSY), long lived particles
decaying to (SUSY) Status of approval:
- Approval not requested until better understanding of CEM PMT base modification impact is reached.
Discriminator boards (LNF design – same as Run IIA)- Cost:
150 kEuro
- Funding year: 2003-2004
- Foreign Institutions: Texas A&M, Chicago
- Italian Institutions: LNF
- Physicists on project: Cordelli at al.
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
Other Run IIB projects CMX Scintillator Counters
Physics: all muon related signatures Status of approval:
- Lab approval not required. Will be treated as a detector maintenance project. CDF will decide based on the understanding of the counter performance and their degradation. However:
Delaying too much may compromise possibility of replacement during the 2005 shutdown. Building now is an insurance toward likely future degradation.

85 kEuro (scintillator/fabrication – 50% of all counters) + 75 kEuro (installation and refurbishing of current system)
EM Timing $399,000 $266,000 $133,000CSX $170,000 $28,000 $142,000
Event builder $538,200 $538,200Total red $12,584,710 $9,548,470 $2,550,000 $486,240
Total $13,776,710 $10,465,470 $2,550,000 $761,240
Franco Bedeschi – INFN-Pisa Riunione Gruppo1 – Roma, Dicembre 2001
