Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Page 2: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is Engagement.

Page 3: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

The three most important aspects of my teaching philosophy are. . .

Page 4: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

i. Class Interaction

Page 5: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

ii. Exploration Through Multiple Means

Page 6: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

iii. And A Chance for Experimentation

Page 7: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

So what does that mean?

Page 8: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Well, techniques vary. Mine is motion.

Page 9: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I talk with my hands

Page 10: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I move through the classroom

Page 11: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I turn

I turn and face the board so the problem is no longer mine for the students, but one we are trying to solve together.

Page 12: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Once, while discussing subject headings,

Page 13: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I told the class a story about how a new woman began showing up in my brother’s photos on facebook.

Page 14: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

“So,” I ask the class, “I have never seen her before. She starts showing up at all of his concerts. Her name is tagged at the bottom of the page. What’s the first thing I’m going to do?”

Page 15: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

“Click on her name,” answers one student, nearly falling out of her chair.

“Exactly,” I answer. “I click on her name to find more information.”

Page 16: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

“It’s no different than this.”

Page 17: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

“Well, maybe a little. . .”

Page 18: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Students leaning forward into the question, answers being given with a smile instead of a sigh

Page 19: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

That’s engagement.

Page 20: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

So, what’s exploration?

Page 21: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

When I finish a session, my goal is for all students to be confident enough to approach library research.  So with every tool, with every concept, I do three things:

Page 22: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I Show it

Page 23: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I Explain it

Page 24: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I Let them try it

Page 25: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I always have

3 And I demonstrate each one

3 ways.

learning objectives

Page 26: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

My instruction is a lot like tic-tac-toe.

Page 27: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

So, after all that talking. Students are more than ready for. . .

Page 28: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

A Chance To Experiment

Page 29: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Students find relevance by using tools to solve immediate problems.

Page 30: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Working in groups is good, too.

Page 31: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Working on their own projects is better still.

Page 32: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

During this time, I can move through the class, filling in gaps.

Page 33: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

It’s easier to meet with 5 groups of 3

Page 34: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

than 15 individuals.

Page 35: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

In summary,

Page 36: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Engaging students in these 3 ways helps concepts become firmly embedded.

Page 37: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

In each class there is time for. . .

Page 38: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Puzzlement

Page 39: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Experimentation

Page 40: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Mistakes

Page 41: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

and Discovery.

Page 42: Statement of Teaching Philosophy

That is what I try to provide.
