Progress continues on the $159 million State Route 99 (SR -99) Manteca Widening Project, which will convert approximately 10 freeway miles from four to six lanes and reconstruct the French Camp and Lathrop Road Interchanges. This project, a partnership between the San Joaquin Council of Governments and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is being funded through a combination of Measure K, SR-99 Bond, and Regional Improvement Program. Work began in June 2012 and is slated for completion in the Fall 2015. Thus far in Phase I, motorists have experienced intermittent lane closures as crews work to construct new median barriers and widen the freeway between Arch Road and SR-120. Soundwall construction on the west side of the freeway also continues. Over the summer, motorists experienced a change when the northbound Main Street on-ramp permanently closed. Drivers wishing to access northbound SR-99 are now diverted from the North Main Street on-ramp to Lathrop Road and then to South Frontage Road to access the freeway on-ramp there. To alert drivers of this change, directional signage was placed onsite and notices were mailed and hand delivered to key property owners along the corridor. Phase II of the project, currently about 40% complete, will reconstruct the French Camp Road Interchange that will improve sight distance and provide a full interchange for motorists. Phase III (Lathrop Road Interchange) is about 30% complete. Crews are currently working on the overcrossing structure of the interchange. As construction activities continue, motorists are encouraged to heed all construction signage and drive with caution through construction zones. While most of the roadwork is scheduled during off-peak hours to prevent traffic delays, motorists may still experience slow downs in construction zones. Once completed, motorists will experience congestion relief, reduced travel times, and improved mobility and safety within the corridor.
