Many thanks to everyone who came along to the Rajar Building on Saturday 23rd November, and particularly to those who brought old photographs and documents.

The day was a great success and well attended throughout, with displays put on by the Family History Society, the Village Society, the Women's Institute and the Rose Queen Festival. Quite a few travelled from outside of Mobberley and were able to find details about their ancestors or where they lived. It’s amazing how much information about Mobberley over the last hundred or so years is still in the hands of local residents and how much many of those who have lived in Mobberley for many years enjoy sharing it.

Mobberley History Day

The names of more than 200 men who served and had some link with Mobberley are listed on the Roll of Honour drawn up after the end of hostilities. Alistair MacLeod is trying to identify all of them and has

reached the point where more than 170 were either born in Mobberley, had family here, married a Mobberley girl or worked and lived in Mobberley, but 29 are proving hard to find. Can anyone throw any light on a link with Mobberley for the following men who—with one exception—served in and survived the war?

Edward Barrett, Harry Burland, Joseph Buckley, Fred Clark, Arthur Colclough, Albert Conway, Andrew Cork, William Davies, Samuel Dickin, Alfred Dobell, William Ellis, Her-bert Farndale, Harry Hatton, William Harding, George Hawkins, Herbert Jackson, Her-bert Johnson, Collin Jugler, Thomas Kurley, Stuart Lee, William Okell, John O'Brien, Thomas Pierce, Herbert Powell, Thomas Rogers, G Shorrocks, Herbert Storres (or Stones), G Strickland, William Taylor, Philip Williams.

If you can help, please contact Alistair MacLeod on 872871.

If one of your New Year resolutions is to begin or progress with research into your family history, our Research Centre in the Rajar Building may be able to help you. You don’t need to be a member of the Society to use our research facilities, but please telephone in advance to make a booking. What if you have no known ancestors in Cheshire? Many of our members are in the same position, but our resources spread far wider than Cheshire. Whether you need a little or a lot of guidance, we’re here to help.

Winter warning! During the winter months, we’ll do our best to keep open our Research Centre in the Rajar Building from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, but there may be occasions when severe weather prevents our volunteers from getting to Mobberley (some of them come from far-flung parts such as Congleton and Macclesfield). In the event of snowy or icy weather, members are advised to telephone the Centre on 872210 to check that it’s open before setting off on a journey.

The Village Society invites everyone to an evening of fun from 7.30pm on Friday, 14th February at the Cricket Club. The evening will include a vocalist singing songs from 50s and 60s. The cost of a ticket is £15 per person, which includes a hot supper (with vegetarian option).

Social evening for all

Once again, a quick reminder that this year's Rose Queen Festival falls on Saturday, 7th June from 2pm. The Rose Queen Choosing, as mentioned in the last Parish News-letter, will be held at the Victory Hall on Friday, 7th February from 7.30pm. Please bring your children along for selection on the evening. For the role of Rose Queen, entrants must have registered with Tony Cooke by 6pm on 7th February. Call Tony Cooke on 872848 to register for Rose Queen or for more other information.

As with each year, we’ll focus heavily on the Childrens' Morris Dance as part of the Festival. It’s worth mentioning that the formation of Morris dance troupes involving the children from the area is one of the unique aspects of the Rose Queen Festival. Ours is believed to be one of the few festivals in the country that still encourages the children to provide the dancing display, rather than relying on experienced Morris troupes. Re-cently, Duncan Broomhead from the The Morris Ring (the National Association of Men's Morris and Sword Dance Clubs) was delighted to find this tradition still thriving in Mob-berley. If your child would like to come and try the dance lessons and be a part of the Mobberley Rose Queen Festival, please contact Joy Parkes on 872013.

We want to make sure our neighbours are able to discuss any issues/concerns relating to Manchester Airport. Feedback tells us that opportunities to discuss a concern or Trust Fund Application in person are valued; we have been attending Knutsford Library on a weekly basis for fourteen years to facilitate such opportunities. On 11th February we will again be in Mobberley, at the Rajar Building between 3pm and 5pm, if you would like to speak to us. Alternatively, you could attend our regular out-reach every Tuesday at Knutsford Library (9.30am to 5pm or 12noon to 5pm on the first Tuesday of each month, providing we are not outreaching elsewhere). For details please see www.manchesterairport.co.uk/keepingintouch.

Manchester Airport Outreach Programme

In December, we were pleased to welcome our guest John Grainger, who told us sto-ries about Father Christmas, then sung a lovely carol. We joined in with more carols before indulging in delicious homemade cakes and mince pies. An enjoyable afternoon.

NEXT MEETING 2.30pm on Wednesday, 12th February at the Rajar Building. Speaker Judy Popley - Flower Power Fairs. All visitors are welcome. Call Jean Godber on 872801 for more information.

The team behind the popular annual SPIRITO music concerts series is gearing up, once again, to present another programme of uplifting entertainment this spring. SPIRITO recognises the power of music and the arts to engage with everyone. The team’s aim, as ever, is to ensure a fabulous and enjoyable time is had by all, while raising funds for good causes in and around Mobberley.

Date for your diary: SATURDAY 8 MARCH. Performing for us this time will be a lively, accomplished and delightfully engaging group of London-based professional singers, Apollo 5. The ensemble has toured the UK and Italy, and has appeared on Radio 2. Apollo 5 forms part of Voices Cantabiles Music Foundation, which is dedicated to taking music into a range of community and educational settings. Expect a mix of Vocal jazz, Folk and Classic acappella singing, with plenty of tunes you will recognise, featuring the likes of Gershwin and Cole Porter. And some stunning retro-style 40s and 50s fashion!

SPIRITO’s winning format remains the same: a stylish concert with access to excep-tionally talented young musicians PLUS an extended interval, during which a yummy two-course meal is served… and all for £25 a head (plus cash bar). Organisers are promoting the event at a new venue this year: Leicester Warren Hall, Bexton Lane in Knutsford. Timings as usual, 7pm arrivals for prompt 7.30pm start.

SPIRITO is well-established as a highlight in our local cultural calendar, and that’s largely down to two factors: a committed band of volunteers on the organisational side of things, who seek out really top-notch performers and carefully plan for your enjoyment, combined with loyal and responsive audiences who ensure, year after year, that this is a sell-out event.

So don’t miss out! Why not put together a group of your friends and join in the fun? Tickets are now on sale! To book, please call Penny Braham on 650207 or Susan Alboutany on 872348.

St. Wilfrid CofE, Church Lane, Mobberley Rector: Revd. Ian Blay 873218/[email protected]

It may be a little belated, but on behalf of all at St. Wilfrid's might I wish you a Happy New Year. It was great as ever to welcome so many of you to our Christmas services, and I hope you found them welcoming and inspirational. February begins with Candlemas, which we shall be celebrating on Sunday February 2nd at 10am. Candlemas marks the end of Nativity season that includes both Christmas and Epiphany so is the time when we stop looking backwards to Bethlehem and the Crib, and begin to turn our gaze toward Jerusalem and the Cross. As Easter is so late this year, Lent doesn’t begin until 5th March, so there will be more about that in next month’s Parish Newsletter. Our All-Age service takes place on the second Sunday of each month and so will be on Sunday 9th February, and our Sunday Club meets every Sunday at 10am. You can find out more about all these services and events, and much more, on our website at www.mobberleychurch.co.uk.

Mobberley Dances and the Wider World As the Rose Queen Festival committee begin preparations for this year's festival it has been pleasing to see that the reputation of our Mobberley dancers has spread far be-yond the village and its locality.

There has been much recent discussion amongst Morris dancers about the ‘right’ way to dance the various regional styles. The Mobberley dance is one of the last remaining dances danced in the old Cheshire style: arms waved high, a high knee step, and danced in flat shoes rather than the clogs often associated with this type of dancing. In October, dance teacher Joy Parkes was quoted by Duncan Broomhead, archivist of the Morris Ring and dance historian, who said on a discussion forum: "The only side I know from Cheshire who still dance the dances the way I remember seeing them in the 1950s is one from Mobberley, trained by Joy Parkes”. High praise indeed.

Prior to this, in August, Joy had been booked by one of England's most prestigious folk festivals, Dartmoor, to teach a workshop on the Mobberley version of the Sailors' Hornpipe. Expecting this to be part of the children's festival, she was a little surprised to find 15 adults turn up, including a serving sailor who wanted to learn the dance to dance at Trafalgar Night in her mess. The workshop was a resounding success and led to a perform-ance at the Sunday afternoon dance display.

Mobile Library

The mobile library will be visiting Edenfield Close between 2pm and 3pm and Bernisdale Road between 3.15pm and 4pm on 7th and 28th February.
