§ From 2002 to 2004 the number of people living in Iredell increased by roughly 6,000 people, so the number of healthcare providers must have increased as well.

Despite a statewide decrease in health insurance coverage, more Iredell residents were covered in 2005 than in 2004. There are differences by gender, age, income, etc. One positive change from 2004: insurance coverage for “other” increased from 63.1% to 72.3%. BRFSS

Iredell residents smoke more than the state average and fewer Iredell residents never started than across the state. There are trends in smoking percentages by gender, race, age, education and income, but none are terrifically striking.

Iredell residents are about as likely to have been tested for HIV as others across the state. Young adults were more likely to get tested than older adults (45+ years). Local Physical Activity and Nutrition (LPAN) Activity

• Increase adult physical activity– Promote trails, parks, and recreation areas– Mark and promote downtown walking trail linking

downtown shops and businesses

• Decrease childhood obesity– Promote Winner’s Circle in schools– Provide nutrition and physical activity information

to students and parents– Support and advocate for policy changes that

promote healthier food options for students

• After an intense Winner’s Circle promotion, more students were aware of the healthy selection markings. (27% vs. 42%)

• Students were influenced to purchase healthy choices also. (18% vs. 25%)

Although only 12% of adults in Iredell are familiar with Winner’s Circle, close to 30% use the purple star/ gold fork logo to guide their food choices. There are only 3 restaurants in Iredell County using Winner’s Circle at this time. There are considerably more statewide. BRFSS
