sampling and was seen as a means to improve worker safety through reduced exposure to dust from

aggregate testing or potentially dangerous conveyor belts.

The first prototype of the Petroscope™ did not handle aggregate particles larger than one-half inch (12

mm). It was therefore incapable of evaluating many aggregate types used on NHDOT projects. Initial

results from the aggregate samples with particles less than one-half inch (12 mm) showed that the

Petroscope™ met the Single-Operator precision limits as defined by ASTM C136-06.

The project ended in 2012 without completing all the work plan elements. PetroModel, Ltd was

developing a second prototype that would have handled the larger aggregate particles, but it never

became available to be shipped to the United States for further evaluation. The major economic

difficulties experienced in Iceland, beginning in 2008, appear to have impacted the progress of the

company. The last communication with PetroModel, Ltd was in early 2012 when the draft of the final

report was shared with the company. No additional information has been received.

Conclusions

There was promise in the concept of evaluating aggregate in a more automated manner. Initial tests

showed good correlation with ASTM testing standards. Because the second prototype was not

available, NHDOT was unable to determine if there was replicability of test results on a single sample.

In addition, the anticipated mineralogy evaluation module was never made available for testing.

Work Plan: Evaluation of Petroscope for Automated Analysis of

Aggregates

SP&R Research Project No. 14282M

Purpose: The Materials & Research Bureau of NH DOT is participating with FHWA in the evaluation of the measuring equipment Petroscope™ and the statistical testing software Techmodel™. PetroModel, Ltd. of Reykjavik, Iceland has developed the device and software, primarily designed for laboratory use, that would identify or measure aggregate properties, such as gradation, shape, specific gravity, density and mineralogy and predict other properties, such as L.A. wear, uncompacted void content and soundness of aggregates. The potential impact of such a device would be to provide these aggregate properties quickly, without the need for lengthy, specialized and expensive manual tests. Plan of Work:

1. Assemble an evaluation group that will include representatives from NHDOT, Industry, FHWA and UNH. Identify the roles and membership of each team of the evaluation group. Each team will then determine the appropriate criteria, standards, etc. for its functional area.

a.) Steering Team (or Technical Advisory Group in SPR terms) to be comprised of the representatives of each participating entity of the evaluation group and lead by the NHDOT RAC Chairman.

b.) Sampling & Testing Team c.) Modeling & Data Team d.) Evaluation Team

2. Collect aggregate samples representing as many geologic regions of the state as

possible. 3. PetroModel will ship the Petroscope prototype 2 to the NHDOT Bureau of Materials &

Research (M&R) for evaluation. An attempt will be made to schedule a demonstration of Petroscope to aggregate suppliers, government agencies, and others while it is in Concord for the testing phase.

4. Perform Standard Test Methods on collected samples for comparison with material

properties reported by running matching samples through Petroscope and Techmodel. Standard Test Methods will include:

a.) AASHTO T-27, Grain-size Analysis b.) AASHTO T-85, Specific Gravity c.) AASHTO TP-56, Uncompacted Void Content d.) AASHTO T-96, L.A. Wear e.) ASTM C-295, Petrographic Examination f.) AASHTO T-104, Soundness of Aggregates g.) AASHTO TP-58, Micro Deval h.) AASHTO TP-61, Determination of Percentage of Fracture in Coarse Aggregate i.) AASHTO T-303, Expansion Due to Alkali-Silica Reaction

5. Evaluate the data for compliance with repeatability criteria found in the respective

Standard Test Methods and for agreement with the manually performed tests.

6. Draft and publish the evaluation report for SPR distribution and submission to TRB.

Work Force: Co-project Managers have been named; Denis Boisvert of NHDOT and Thorgeir Helgason of PetroModel. NHDOT M&R staff will collect aggregate samples for testing and outsource petrographic services. M&R will perform all other Standard Test Methods and process samples using Petroscope and Techmodel. Data will be forwarded to the UNH Civil Engineering Dept., who will perform the evaluation and draft the report. Schedule: April 2006 Project organization complete September 2006 NHDOT begins collecting samples November 2006 NHDOT begins performing manual tests August 2007 Gradation and mineralogy modules of Petroscope are delivered; automated

A poster will be created for display at appropriate events.

Abstract Petromodel ehf of Reykjavik, Iceland has developed a piece of equipment (the Petroscope) that

automates the evaluation process of aggregate samples using machine vision – a combination of digital

photo imagery and software analysis. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) is

evaluating the Petroscope for inclusion into their normal analysis workflow. The NHDOT performed

standard method tests on fifteen aggregate sources from across the state, then provided these samples

(in addition to two duplicates) to Petromodel for testing. Petromodel processed six of the seventeen

samples sent, stating in an email that the reason that those six were the only samples to completely

pass a 37.5mm (1.5in) sieve; that a new model of the Petroscope is required to test particle sizes

exceeding 37.5mm. From the data provided by Petromodel and the NHDOT, comparisons were made of

the gradation of paired samples, and it was determined that the Petroscope performed within Single

Operator precision limits as defined in ASTM C 136-06 (analogous to AASHTO T 27) for all six samples.

Summary of Data The NHDOT performed three tests for each of the fifteen samples:

AASHTO T 104: Standard Method of Test for Soundness of Aggregate by Use of Sodium Sulfate or Magnesium Sulfate

AASHTO T 327: Standard Method of Test for Resistance of Coarse Aggregate to Degradation by Abrasion in the Micro-Deval Apparatus

AASHTO T 27: Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates

Petromodel performed two tests for each of six samples that they determined to be of sufficient

gradation to be evaluated with the existing version of the Petroscope:

Mechanical sieve analysis in accordance with AASHTO T 27/ASTM C 136

Petroscope machine vision analysis

The raw data (as it was submitted), has been reproduced in the appendix. From that data that was

provided, the only comparison that could be made was between the Petroscope gradation results and

the NHDOT gradation results, as none of the additional data provided by Petromodel was analogous to

the data from the AASHTO T 327 and AASHTO T 104 testing performed by the NHDOT.

Analysis A comparison was performed between NHDOT and Petromodel mechanical sieve results in order to

establish accurate pairing between the NHDOT samples (labeled A through O) and the Petromodel

samples (labeled 04, 05, 06, 10, 12, and 15) and to identify possible replicates in the Petromodel testing.

From Figure 1, sample pairs were determined (see Table 1) and no replicates were identified. Grey lines

in Figure 1 indicate NHDOT samples that did not represent samples tested by Petromodel.

Due to the lack of replicates among the Petromodel testing results, a direct comparison of the data was

performed to determine precision as defined in ASTM C 136-06: Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis

of Fine and Coarse Aggregates. The NHDOT mechanical sieve results were used as the reference, and

the Petromodel machine vision results (Table 6) were compared to the NHDOT mechanical sieve results.

From this comparison, it was determined that all of the Petromodel machine vision results fell within the

Single-Operator precision limits from ASTM C136-06 Table 2 (reproduced in Table 2 below). The

breakdown of the comparison between the Petromodel machine vision results and the NHDOT

mechanical sieve analysis can be found in Table 3.

In Table 3, the “Diff” column is the difference between the NHDOT and Petromodel results for each

sample and each sieve size. The column labeled “AvgPass” are the average percent passing from both

the NHDOT and Petromodel results for the respective samples and sieve sizes. This number is used to

determine which precision range applies to each result. The results in Table 3 have been graphed, along

with the ASTM C 136-06 limits, in Figure 2.

Petromodel’s machine vision analysis also provided particle angularity, particle form (shape), and

estimates of volume and surface area. Again, no comparative data was provided by the NHDOT for those

parameters, so no analysis of the data was performed.

From the comparison between the NHDOT sieve analysis and the Petromodel machine vision results in

Table 3, the largest source of error between the two methods was the 25mm sieve, followed by the

19mm sieve (see Figure 3). When the sources of error were grouped according to sample pairing, total

error in each sample in the comparison was generally between 3% and 6%, with sample pairing 04/G

falling considerably below that and displaying no error between the 25mm measurements from each

method (see Figure 4).

Conclusion

Results from the Petromodel ehf Petroscope process fall within Single-Operator precision limits as

defined by ASTM C 136-06. The Petroscope’s performance appears to be weakest with the 25mm and

19mm sieve classifications, with cumulative error across all samples well above the differences seen in

the other sieve sizes. It would be beneficial, for additional verification of the accuracy of the Petroscope

in comparison to the current NHDOT methods, if Petromodel performed multiple replicates on each of

the six samples tested so that a meaningful statistical analysis could be performed.
