Virginia Tech Softball 2006 Quick Facts The State Line Classic: The Hokies hold an all-time record of 6-8 in eight years at the State Line Classic. At the 1997 SLC, Tech fell to the Lady Vols, 0-17 and 2-12. In 1998, Tech fell to Tennessee, 0-8 and 0-11. At the 1999 Classic, the Hokies won their lone game, defeating UT, 3-1. In 2000, Tech downed Kentucky, 6-3 in nine innings, and Tennessee, 1-0, but fell to Notre Dame twice, 1-0 in eight innings and 3-0. In 2001, Tech held on late for a 4-2 win over the Lady Vols. In 2002, Ashlee Dobbe tossed a no-hitter as the Hokies rolled to a 6-0 win over UT before Katie Maynard tossed a two-hit shutout in 2003 as the Hokies downed UT, 1-0. In 2004, the Lady Vols escaped with a 1-0 win in nine innings on an unearned run scored on an error and ETSU scored early and held on for a 4-2 win. Last year’s game against Tennessee was rained out. Scouting the Buccaneers: The Bucs are just 13-31 coming into the contest, losers of their last 10, but have several good wins, including victories over Radford, Pittsburgh and the College of Charleston. Briana Knight leads the Bucs with a .305 average and 12 stolen bases. Mary Catherine Vercoe and Stephanie Gaynord each have five home runs. In the circle, Courtney Jenkins is 4-12 with an ERA of 4.20 to lead the staff. As a team, ETSU hits .231 with 25 home runs, but has a team ERA of 5.00, giving up 43 round trippers. Series History: Virginia Tech and East Tennessee State have met eight previous times with the Hokies holding a 7-1 lead. ETSU’s only win in the series came in the 2004 SLC. The two first met in 2001 with the Hokies winning two games in Blacksburg, 8-0 (6) and 2-0. The following year, the team traveled to Johnson City and won 10-1 (6) and 6-0. In 2004, ETSU returned to Blacksburg for a tournament and the Hokies won, 6-4. ETSU’s lone win came in 2004, winning 4-2. Last year, ETSU returned to Tech’s home tournament and dropped a pair of games to the Hokies, 9-1 and 4-3. Where’s the Offense Gone?: After winning 10 of 11 previous games, including a sweep at Boston College, the Hokies have gone cold in their last seven games. In that stretch, Tech is just 2-5 and the offense has disappeared. Over the last seven games, the Hokies are averaging just .199 at the plate, 1.3 runs, 5.1 hits and have been shut out three times and held to one run twice. The good news is, the pitching has stabilized, bolstered by two strong outing from Katie Maynard. Unfortunately, the run support hasn’t been there and Tech has gone from first to fourth in the ACC standings and the team batting average has gone from over .310 to .291. Of Tech’s 13 losses this year, seven have come via shutout. Leave the ETSU Gear at Home: Head coach Scot Thomas will have to leave all of his ETSU gear at home when his team travels to Bristol. That’s because Thomas is 1991 graduate of the Johnson City school. He graduated with a degree in physical education. He hasn’t gone easy on his old school, posting a 7-1 career mark against his Bucs. Odds and Ends: Tech is 19-16 all-time in the state of Tennessee … Tech is 16-13 all-time against teams from the state of Tennessee … Kelly Brown needs 11 hits to break the school record for career hits … Angela Tincher set the school record for season strikeouts last weekend. Working Summer Vacations: Angela Tincher spent part of her summer vacation participating with Triple Crown Colorado at the 2005 Canada Cup International Women’s Fastpitch Tournament. The highlight of her play came when she beat a strong China-Beijing team, tossing a three-hit, complete-game shutout and striking out nine. For the tournament, she went 2-2 with an impressive ERA of 0.88. Everhart had the game-winning RBI in a 4-2, 11-inning win over Beverly Bandits when she came up with an RBI single in 11th inning.

Inside the Numbers

That's the most often-asked question regarding Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won fi rst prize for his "Old Hokie" yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the words he used had no hidden or symbolic meaning, but had been thought up in an effort to get attention. Hokie soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. Following is the "Old Hokie" yell in its original form:

Hoki, Hoki, Hoki Hy!Tech! Tech! V.P.I.!Sola-Rex Sola-Rah

Polytech-Vir-gin-i-a!!Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

What’s a Hokie? While the full name of the school is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the school is commonly referred to as “Virginia Tech.” Founded in 1872, as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, the university changed its named to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1896. Fans of the athletic department, as well as media covering the Hokies, shortened the name to VPI, but it eventually became Virginia Tech. The “State University” was added in 1970 to bring the offi cial title to what it is today. Those covering Hokie athletics are asked to refer to the university as simply “Virginia Tech.”

Virginia Tech University, VPI and SU, VPI&SU, VT or VA Tech are not recognized names and should not be used.

Runnin’ Hokies The Tech coaching staff knew it lost a lot of power from its departing senior class, but also knew it had a ton of speed to replace it. The result? Eight stolen bases in eight attempts in a doubleheader at Furman and 13 more at the Holiday Inn Green & White Tournament, including seven against UNC Greensboro, which set a new school record. So the watch is already on. The school record for stolen bases in a season is 71, set in 2004 and Tech is one away from that record. The record for attempts was broken against North Carolina and now stands at 87, breaking the mark of 86, also set in 2004.

National RecognitionSophomore pitcher Angela Tincher (Eagle

Rock, Va.) keeps raising the bar in terms of national recognition for the Tech softball program. First, she was named as one 50 players to watch for National Player of the Year honors. But on April 7, she was named one of 25 fi nalists for the award and is one of just for sophomores to make the cut. This award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women’s

collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA’s Stacey Nuveman, Florida State’s Jessica Van der Linden and two-time winner Texas pitcher Cat Osterman. The 2006 fi nalist list is comprised of 25 players representing 18 schools and seven different NCAA Division I Conferences. Among the list are 12 seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen. Tincher is one of two players from the ACC on the list and one of just nine strictly pitchers on the list. It marks the fi rst such honor for any player in the 11-year history of the program She’s done nothing to discourage voters, tossing three no-hitters on the year and an 18-4 record. Four of her six losses have been 1-0 decisions and with two of those losses, the runs were unearned.

What Can Brown Do For You? When we last saw Kelly Brown (Dale City, Va.) in 2005, she was sick at the NCAA Regionals in Knoxville and was taken to the hospital. Turns out she had viral meningitis

and had to be held in the hospital for several days. She’s back for her senior season and will once again man right fi eld. But this year, she’s moved from her leadoff spot to the No. 3 spot in the lineup and is hitting away more. She can still slap and use her speed to get on, but she’s going to take a much more aggressive approach to hitting this year, using the power slap more often. Last year, she hit .322 for the season with a school-record 76 hits and earned all-region honors. She also had a school-record 24-game hitting streak. This season, she is batting .333 with 46 hits, eight doubles, two triples, 18 RBI and 17 stolen bases. Against UNCG, she tied the school record with fi ve hits and drove in six runs. She is now 12 hits away from breaking the school’s career record for hits, held by Michelle Meadows of 254, and three doubles away from that career mark, held also by Meadows with 49.

AS THE SEASON HAS PROGRESSED

future appears to be bright for the Hokies. Five freshmen have started at least one game and seven of them have seen action.

Jessica Everhart (Purcellville, Va.) leads the way in center fi eld, starting all 43 games. She is batting .355 with 43 hits, six doubles, a triple, 16 RBI and four home runs. She had a big two-run home run to open the scoring against Minnesota and drove in the winning runs against Nevada.

Charisse Mariconda (Hollywood, Fla.) has 44 hits, 10 doubles, two home runs and 18 RBI, starting all 43 games at third base. She is batting .312 this season and had the game-winning home run against NC State in the ninth inning and against Boston College in the seventh inning.

Erin Ota (Irvine, Calif.) has started 34 games at second base and has 40 hits, a triple, nine RBI, four stolen bases and is batting a team-leading .391.

Kelsy Rokey (Tucson, Ariz.) hit her fi rst collegiate home run against Marshall and caught Angela Tincher’s (Eagle Rock, Va.) no-hitters against Furman and Radford.

Beth Walker (Galax, Va.) has started 19 games and is batting .346 with 18 hits, four home runs, four doubles, 18 RBI and 13 walks. Two other freshmen have also contributed. Jenna Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) has a hit, a walk and 11 stolen bases. Morgan Harris (Lovingston, Va.) has also come off the bench to chip in a hit and an RBI.

She’s Back … And Has the RecordCallie Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) missed

all but six games last year with a knee injury. She was granted a medical redshirt and is fully recovered as she plays her redshirt junior year. As a sophomore in 2004, the speedy Rhodes set a Tech record with 31 stolen bases, coming on 34 attempts. Last year, she was 3-for-3 on stolen bases early in the season before sustaining the injury. She opened the 2006 campaign with three swipes in as many attempts in a doubleheader at Furman and picked up two more at Charlotte’s tournament. At the Coastal Carolina tournament, she picked up swipe No. 53 for her career, breaking the school record set by Bronwyn Blair of 52. She now sits with 68 for her career and is 21-for-24 on the season. While in the long run Rhodes, as a junior, will likely take the record, senior Kelly Brown (Dale City, Va.) is right on her heels. Brown has 62 stolen bases entering the upcoming series.

Sweet CarolineTech got a diamond in the rough when

sophomore Caroline Stolle (Chester, Va.) walked on last season. She has been a valuable role player, starting 90 games, including 77 in left fi eld, 10 at third base, two at designated player and one at second base. For her career, she

Preseason Votes The Virginia Tech softball team was recognized in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Preseason Poll, receiving 11 votes in the poll which is voted on by NCAA Division I coaches. The 11 votes put them in a tie for 32nd place, their highest preseason ranking ever. Tech entered the 2000 season ranked 33rd in this same poll, picking up 18 preseason votes. Previously, Tech had broken into the top 25 once in the program’s history, coming in at No. 25 to end the 1999 season. Two weeks ago, Tech made its fi rst ever regular season appearance in the poll, moving into the No. 23 spot with 52 votes. Last week, the team moved back into the Top 25, settling in at the No. 24 spot nationally. This week, the Hokies are ranked 27th.

Gettin’ It Done In The Classroom Sophomore Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) has been a spark plug on the fi eld, but is also getting it done in the classroom. She was named to the 2004-05 ACC All-Academic Team and will be a strong candidate for Academic All-America honors this year with a 3.79 GPA in fi nance, insurance and business law. Callie Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) is just as quick to pull in good grades as she is on the fi eld. The redshirt junior holds a 3.56 GPA in communications.
