The project presentations were based around communicating awareness to the community about “What’s in our Water”. We began this exciting new initiative for our Year 7 students this term. The Kilcoy project combined the curriculum of science and humanities into one unit designed to provide opportunities for students to come together as a group to develop their collaboration skills, whilst still providing individual class group work with a focus on developing their science data skills and the communication aspect of humanities. The unit provided opportunities for students to interact with outside organisations locally such as SEQ Water and included excursions to Wivenhoe Dam, and local creek water quality testing reinforced the in-class learning. Students are to be congratulated on the high standard of their final presentations and commended on their enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject. This combined science/humanities project was an outstanding example of Kilcoy State High School’s commitment to providing quality learning opportunities to its students.

Year 7 KEP Community Presentation
KILCOY State High School An Independent Public School
On Friday 25 November, the Year 7 Students delivered the final component of the Kilcoy Environmental Project when they presented their findings and project displays to the community at the Kilcoy Information Centre. The project presentations were based around communicating awareness to the community about “What’s in our Water”.
We began this exciting new initiative for our Year 7 students this term. The Kilcoy project combined the curriculum of science and humanities into one unit designed to provide opportunities for students to come together as a group to develop their collaboration skills, whilst still providing individual class group
work with a focus on developing their science data skills and the communication aspect of humanities.

Science Department News
Year 8 Students have been studying Biology this term and investigating cells, their structure and function.
Students completed a range of projects that involved designing models or reports that showed understanding of the scientific knowledge and evidence learnt throughout the unit to examine plant cell specialisation and the development of our modern understanding of the cell.
The year 9s have been studying chemistry this term and were learning about titration. They carried out a titration to determine the amount of hydrochloric acid that 3 different antacid tablets could neutralise.
A titration is chemical technique that requires quite a bit of skill.
Students use the technique in senior chemistry to determine molarity or concentration of chemicals.
It requires the use of a chemical indicator that changes colour once the end point (neutralisation) has been reached.
They all did really well and used the equipment with a high degree of accuracy and skill.
In just a few short days, we return your kids to you to rest and recharge ready for a hard working 2017.
Have a wonderful holiday and we will see you all back in full correct
formal uniform on Monday 23 January 2017.

Our 2017 leaders were invited to
attend the Halogen Foundation
National Young Leaders Day at the
Brisbane Convention Centre.
The National Young Leaders Day
is an annual event founded in 1997
to develop strong leadership values
amongst young Australians.
The Program consists of keynote
talks, multimedia presentations and
interactive learning that seek a
range of specific outcomes for
young people who aspire to lead
themselves and others well.
The Halogen Foundation gathers
together prominent leaders from all
walk of life to be a part of this day.
The program is designed to benefit
any student who shows an interest
in developing their leadership
potential.
Our students reported that the
event was a fantastic experience.

Our Agricultural department was host to a visit from the students of C&K Kindergarten on Monday.
The children were given a tour of our farm produce where they learnt how to tell when corn is ready to pick, and how big zucchini get if you forget to pick them in time.
The carrot picking was very popular and all students were able to take their very impressive carrots home.
The year 10 students assisted with a petting session with our bigger chickens and the goats, before the
children were show a feeding session of our native fish.
In what was great timing, two of
our incubator eggs hatched that
morning, so they were able to see
what a chicken looks like when it
has just hatched.
Being able to provide this
opportunity to the local children is
one of the great advantages that
our school has, and is part of the
close community connection that
Kilcoy State High School prides
itself on.

Amanda Mills and Sophie Wolf
are the PEPAR Stars for
November.
Amanda was selected to be the
Qld representative of the
Australian Team who competed in
the 2016 International Mounted
Games at Whittlesea in Victoria.
This was the second time that the Australian Team has won, narrowly defeating the team from the UK. Other countries were USA and Canada
All riders in the event rode borrowed horses rotated each round. Performing at the elite level on an unfamiliar horse is a fantastic achievement for these riders under 16 years old.
Riders also experienced highlights of Victoria - bushwalking in the Grampians, canoeing, a cruise on the Yarra, visits to Phillip Island, Healesville Sanctuary, the Darley stud operation at Northwood Park
Seymour, and Pony Clubs at Stawell and Yarrambat. Congratulations Amanda.
Sophie was recognised for recently competing in the All Schools Triathlon Championships at Kawana, where she placed first for the Sunshine Coast region and 13th overall.
