Density +

Velocitybetween the pillars

Investors – Universities – State Agencies – MNCs – Professional Service Providers

Note: What are the common success factors in these startup ecosystems?

Note: Density is the physical proximity of the key pillars of a mature startup ecosystem and Velocity is how quickly startup can progress through the ecosystem

Page 10: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

Note: When one looks at London one can see the benefits of Density and Velocity

Page 11: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

Note: Positive momentum is building at all levels - Minister Bruton launched a wide ranging strategic plan for

entrepreneurship and Ireland's startup sector in October 2014

Page 12: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

Note: At the heart of any startup ecosystem must be an economic engine - the real game changer is the

opportunity offered by the biggest structural reform of the fiscal framework in the history of our state

“..the aim of encouraging companies to locate high-value jobs associated with the development of intellectual property in Ireland.” Dept. of Finance

Note: If the Knowledge Development Box is appropriately structured this will be the engine of Ireland's global startup hub

Has the potential to: Help indigenous scale-ups strengthen in Ireland longer before tackling international markets.Help startups negotiate better funding deals with VCs.Help Ireland attract the next Google/ Amazon/Microsoft

Page 15: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

If the Knowledge Development Box is the engine what are the

sparkplugs that fire the engine towards the goal of a startup hub?

Note: And this spark needs to capture the best of what it is to be Irish, attributes that lends our country to being an ideal global startup hub

.

Note: As a nation we Irish like to share and help

.

Note: And a startup is the classic underdog

Page 18: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

.

Note: The startup guru Brad Feld states that a sense of commitment to the startup community, the giving of mentoring, resources and support without the expectation of immediate return is at the heart of successful startup ecosystems. This is very much an essential characteristic of what it is to be Irish

Page 20: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

Diaspora Startup

Fund

Note: Encouraging emigrants with good startup ideas to return to build their business from Ireland will be a key theme of the Startup Gathering. Startup Ireland will lead an international Kickstarter campaign to raise a ‘Diaspora Startup Fund’ to support the flights to Ireland of 50 Irish emigrants for the Startup Gathering to investigate pursuing their startup opportunity back in Ireland.

Page 22: Startup Ireland presentation to the Irish Parliament (Dail) Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation 10 feb 2015 final

Phase 1 is about engaging the stakeholders through a national call to organize events around the theme: “Start, Scale, Succeed from Ireland. “

Phase 2 is about engaging the nation in the build up to the week with the message: “Now is the right time. “
