What’s it all about? If you have a broadband internet

connection, it is now possible catch up with programmes you have missed during the past seven days and watch or listen to them free of charge on your computer.

They are sent to your computer using a technology called streaming.

Most modern PCs have the software that you need to view or listen to streamed video or sound, but if yours does not you will be able to download it free from the websites that provide the programmes.

Remember: To explore the World Wide Web you use a

web browser, often called simply a browser. The browser displays a single web page; you

move around the Web by following hyperlinks.

These are codes embedded in web pages which link to other web pages or other parts of the page that you are viewing.

The mouse pointer normally appears as an arrow

As you move the pointer around the screen you will see it change to a pointing finger.

You have located a hyperlink. Click the left mouse button once and a new page, or a different part of the page, will be displayed.

Surfing Moving between web pages like this is

called “surfing”. Hyperlinks can be located in any part of a

web page. In a well-designed web page the location of the hyperlinks will be clearly indicated, by underlined text, or via other clues: arrows, "menus", “tabs", or descriptive text within the page. Hyperlinks may also be embedded in images.

Surfing the World Wide Web is a superb way of researching and enjoying your hobbies. You should be able to find everything you need – pictures, sounds, text, groups to join, ways of sharing information, places to buy from etc.

Google searches

1. Search Box: You can change the search for better results.

2. The number of results, or hits. A search like “holidays scotland” gets a lot of hits!

3. Sponsored Links: Companies pay Google to display advertising links either at the top or side of each page.

4. Each hit shows the text that matched your search and the URL and name of the page. Click on the underlined text or the web address (e.g. www.visitscotland.com) to view the page.

Wikipedia Another excellent place to pursue your hobbies is

found at www.wikipedia.org. Wikipedia (pronounced WIK-i-PEE-dee-ə) is a

free,web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia's 13 million articles (three million in the English Wikipedia) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site. It is currently the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet. If you do pretty much any Google search, the top entry in the search results is very likely to be a Wikipedia page.
