AppeasementIn WWI, Germany lost much territoryWas denied large military To protect FranceHitler begun rebuilding army, navy, air forceBegan taking control of countries surrounding itForcefully and peacefullyRemilitarized the Rhine

Appeasement of Hitler

AppeasementDefinition: Making concessions to an enemy with the intention of avoiding conflict with that personBritain Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler (gave him what he wanted) hoping that it would:

make Hitler happy and keep peace in Europe

ProblemYou are Britain and France in 1938, Hitler has remilitarized and taken control of Austria and Sudetenland. These are all things that are supposedly illegal. What do you do? Hitler promises he is through, that he is just claiming territory that is rightfully German. You dont want another war, what do you do?

AppeasementA Good or Bad Policy? Create a chart that shows the thoughts of the supporters and critics of appeasement.CRITICS OF THE APPEASEMENT WOULD ARGUE:

That a tougher line was needed with Germany. Appeasement allowed Hitler to become stronger.

The threat of military action should have been against Germany much earlier than 1939.

Perhaps if Hitler had been strongly challenged in 1936 during the Rhineland incident he might have pursued more peaceful methods.

The German people may even have voted him from power for risking another warSUPPORTERS OF APPEASEMENT WOULD ARGUE:

If World War 2 had not broken out, the policy of appeasement would be seen as successful.

Preventing a second world war was a noble and admirable course of action.

It was the only course of action open to Britain.Appeasement Hitler then takes all of CzechoslovakiaCzechs up in arms!Allies do nothingMunich Conference 1938Allies tell Hitler, if you stop now we wont bother youBritish Prime Minister, Peace for our timeApril 1938
