Serving our
Jamaica Avenue Community for 39 years
of the year, when we fought against proposed street changes - it wasn’t just one or two peo-ple that fought that battle - we had over a dozen volunteers going door to door, handing out flyers -- in sub-zero temperatures!
Collectively, we raised money for our Volun-teer Ambulance Corp, we donated gifts to the Forest Park Aktion Club, we raised enough money to sponsor a baseball team - we not only worked together, but we spread our
goodwill and it benefitted others.
We are at our best when we work together - and tonight I am extremely happy that we are together to celebrate.
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Each and every year I have the honor of being part of the process to select those among us who are special and deserve that little extra recognition.
I am very pleased and honored to be part of this years celebration because I believe that tonight we are honoring some of Woodhave-n’s best—la crème de la crème.
As you page through this year’s journal you will have an opportunity to read about this year’s honorees - please take a few moments to get to know them.
We are also here to celebrate what turned out to be a fantastic year of teamwork within our community. If you think back to the start

Currently, between 80 and 100 women
are enrolled at the center, becoming
more fluent in English on a daily basis.
But apart from the ESL classes they are
also learning math and computer skills,
the goal being to prepare them to enter
the job market with better paying posi-
tions.
"I got married when I
was young and was
busy taking care of 5
children; that's why I
never went to school,"
one student explained
to us between clas-
ses. "Now my children
are all grown up and
it's time for me to
learn. My age doesn't
matter, the important
thing is that I want to learn."
On their website, the SSNDEC offers up
some of their success stories to inspire
others. One example of success is
Anne Marie, a single mother of two
teenagers who achieved the GED while
living in a shelter. She currently holds a
full time job and is going to college.
Another success story is Dorothy, an
immigrant from Nigeria who got her
GED at SSNDEC and is now in her last
year of nursing at the University of
Rochester. There are many, many more
success stories at SSNDEC.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame are
making a difference in this world every
day and we are very proud that they are
doing so right here in Woodhaven.
There is something special happening
on 88th Avenue in Woodhaven.
Through their work with women who
find themselves at an economic disad-
vantage, the School Sisters of Notre
Dame Educational Center (SSNDEC) is
making a difference. They are changing
the lives of women and their children,
giving them hope and opportunity.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame reli-
gious community was founded in Bavar-
ia in 1833 and they first reached our
shores in 1847. Locally, they started in
Ozone Park in 2003 before moving here
to Woodhaven in 2009.
"Our first class was 18 women from
different sections of Queens who need-
ed to prepare for the GED," Sr. Cathe-
rine Feeney, Executive Director of the
SSNDEC explained. "And each time we
started a new class we found out there
were more areas that we weren't cover-
ing, so we began teaching basic educa-
tion and literacy which eventually meld-
ed into what was really needed, ESL
classes."

bursting into flames (see picture below).
When he and neighbors called 911 to
report this emergency they were greet-
ed with a recording!
The winds began to kick up and since
houses in that section of Woodhaven
are largely made of wood, a disaster
was in the making. Drawing on his
knowledge and experience Bill was able
to get a call through to the FDNY call
center on Park Lane South and
Woodhaven Boulevard. Within minutes
a fire truck was on the scene, the
flames were extinguished and - thanks
to Bill - a disaster was averted.
Bill gratefully gives credit to all he has
achieved to his dear wife Ruth, who
passed away last May. Together, Bill
and Ruth raised a daughter, Lauren,
who has a successful career and is en-
gaged to be married any day now. The
WRBA thanks Bill and the Johnert family
for all they have done to make
Woodhaven special.
Bill Johnert is a steady presence at just
about any meeting or event that you go
to. Whether it be civic meetings or pa-
rades or concerts, you can always rest
assured that Bill will be there.
"When we first started cover-
ing events for our website, Bill
was the first person who came
over and introduced himself to
us," said Ed Wendell, Presi-
dent of the Woodhaven Resi-
dents' Block Association. "He
put us at ease, he made us
feel very welcome."
That kind of dedication, per-
sonality and leadership makes
Bill a special part of
Woodhaven. He moved to
Woodhaven in the 1970s and
says that he felt "immediately em-
braced" by the community. So reaching
out to others comes naturally and he
describes it as "paying back" the good
feelings he has received over the years.
Not one to sit on the sidelines, Bill got
involved with the community almost
immediately and was soon elected Pres-
ident of the Woodhaven Residents'
Block Association, only the 2nd person
to hold that honor. From there he got
involved in politics and has held the
position of District Leader for the Re-
publican Party for many years.
His leadership skills were on full display
back in March 2010 when, in the after-
math of a powerful storm that brought
down trees throughout Woodhaven,
power lines on 86th Street and 85th
Road began to spark and glow before

for summer (a task made doubly diffi-
cult as NYCE had assumed responsibil-
ity for the Flushing Carousel, as well).
And on Memorial Day weekend, after 3
straight disappointing summers, the
gates of our Forest Park Carousel were
finally open again to the children of
Woodhaven! And it wasn't just children
who flocked to the joyous re-opening.
Octogenarian and longtime President of
the Woodhaven Historical Society Leo-
nora Lavan was thrilled to ride the car-
ousel again, just as she had as a child
in the 1930s.
As much as the
residents of
Woodhaven wanted
the Forest Park
Carousel just to be
open again, it was
even more im-
portant that it be
entrusted to people
who would care for
it as much as we
do. We're very hap-
py that this is now
the case. The men and women of New
York Carousel Entertainment have
shown themselves to be trusted care-
takers of our beloved and historic treas-
ure.
They have also proven themselves to be
active partners with the community,
hosting a very successful benefit to
raise money to fight Alzheimer's Dis-
ease. We said it back in May and we're
happy to say it once again to our new
friends at New York Carousel Entertain-
ment: Welcome to Woodhaven!
Since the mid-1960's the Forest Park
Carousel has been the subject of a lot
of attention, some of it not so positive.
The original carousel burned to the
ground in December of '66 and the new
carousel, built in 1903, came to
Woodhaven in 1972. Local residents
quickly warmed to the new carousel,
which contained some of the last surviv-
ing carved animals by master wood-
carver Daniel Carl Muller.
For over a decade the carousel pros-
pered but in the 1980s it fell victim to
neglect and the
gates were
shuttered for 3
years. A full
restoration fol-
lowed and it
reopened in
1989. In re-
cent years, the
residents of
Woodhaven
were very mind-
ful of that histo-
ry as they
watched the
months and years of the calendar fly by,
the carousel locked and shuttered once
again. As year after year passed by peo-
ple began to wonder if we'd all seen the
very last of our beloved Forest Park Car-
ousel.
And then, in the first week of May, New
York Carousel Entertainment LLC en-
tered the picture dramatically, as if they
were riding to the rescue on one of Mr.
Muller's finely carved horses. Once the
announcement was made, NYCE had
just 21 days to get the carousel ready

The congregation bought a nearby plot
of land on 91st Avenue, and built the
beautiful church that has sat welcoming
travelers to Woodhaven for over 70
years.
For all of those years, Emanuel has

a remarkably
long association.
They have also
opened their
doors to many
various groups
and organizations

been meeting at
Emanuel for over two decades. They
have been, and continue to be, valued

their 135th Anniversary and offer our
thanks to the consistory of Emanuel —

Casto, Dolores Rosato, Pam Steffens,
Walter Steffens, Gloria Wanner, and

Reverend Toni Walrond and all of their
family and friends.
Emanuel United Church of Christ sits at
91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boule-
vard, giving it the unique distinction of
being either the first or last thing people
see when entering or leaving
Woodhaven.
It was
135 years
ago that it
launched
in Man-
hattan
supported
by Ger-
man im-
migrants
and a few
famous
German
notables
such as
Jacob
Astor and
General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben,
who was George Washington's Chief of
Staff in the final years of the Revolution-
ary War.
Expanding eastward, first in 1877 in
Brooklyn and later on in Richmond Hill,
Emanuel eventually purchased a plot at
89th Avenue and Woodhaven Boule-
vard.
The new church building was opened in
1924 but it lasted a little over a decade.
A year after its 60th Anniversary, in
1938, the City of New York took over
the property and tore down the church
as part of the project to widen
Woodhaven Boulevard.

2012 Journal
The WRBA took to the streets en masse
in March, reporting graffiti and other
issues that needed to be addressed
during our 311 Weekend Fundraiser. A
number of our members were sponsor-
ing this event by pledging small
amounts, anywhere from a dime to a
dollar for each 311 call we made.
Over three dozen houses had their graf-
fiti removed by the city and the WRBA
managed to raise $550 for the
Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer
Ambulance Corps. It was a classic case
of win-win!
Come May, we heard the great news
that our beloved Forest Park Carousel
was reopening. The WRBA had worked
hard to keep the carousel’s plight on
everyone’s radar and we were very hap-
py with the city’s choice for a caretaker.
So happy, in fact, that they are being
honored this very evening.
This summer, the WRBA hosted its very
first Block Party BBQ in Forest Park. A
fun time was had by all and we look
forward to doing it again next year.
As summer ap-
proached, the WRBA
introduced a pro-
gram known as
Noisebusters which
was designed to
target chronic noise
abusers and feed information to our
local precinct about the troublemakers.
We believe it must be working because
at a recent meeting our Community Af-
fairs Officers said that noise complaints
had decreased over the course of the
summer.
The WRBA next took to the streets to
combat graffiti, not settling for once-a-
year cleanups, but instead hitting the
streets every weekend to paint mailbox-
es, fireboxes and light poles.
The WRBA also closely documented the
tags and reported them to the police,
which led to further charges being filed
against one arrested vandal.
It has been a fulfilling year and we look
forward to trying to top it in 2013!

hearing with the DOT was held. Our
residents showed up in force, some of
them bringing along their own maps
and diagrams to make their case.
The Community Board hearing to vote
on the proposal was postponed twice
and moved to Woodhaven—and what a
crowd we had! CB9 listened to both
sides and ultimately decided —
unanimously — to reject the proposal.
At the same time, the long fought for
Rezoning of Woodhaven was approved
by the Community Board (it would be
final approved by the City Council later
in the year).
The generosity of the members of the
WRBA was on display in the Spring as
they contributed amounts large and
small in order to sponsor a team in
WORKS Little
League. Our
team, the
WRBA Devil
Rays played
hard and we
know they will
try even harder
next season.
It’s been a fantastic year for the WRBA
from start to finish. Here’s a look at
some of the highlights over the past 12
months.
We ended 2011 in a festive mood.
Thanks to the generosity of our mem-
bers we were able to provide Christmas
gifts to the developmentally challenged
men and women of the Forest Park Ak-
tion Club. We also held our very first
Christmas Parade Watching Party in
which we stood in the street and
cheered the parade marchers.
No sooner did we hit 2012 when we
found out that we had a mission to carry
out. The DOT was attempting 2 street
changes (89th Avenue and 84th Street)
that would negatively impact
Woodhaven. Our residents mobilized,
writing letters and emails, making
phone calls, and eventually a public

Woodhaven’s First Town Hall On the evening of Saturday, July 30, 1853, a group of citizens gathered in a
church in the village of Woodville, Long Island. Not too long before they were
notified by the US Government that a request to open a Woodville post office
had been turned down because there already was a Woodville in existence in
upstate New York.
On that fine evening the residents voted to
re-name the village to Woodhaven and the
first Woodhaven Town Hall came to a suc-
cessful end.
Since 1972 the community of Woodhaven
has gathered to discuss important issues
affecting residents at Town Hall meetings
sponsored by the Woodhaven Residents’
