STANDING WAVES AND DIFFRACTION
STANDING WAVES
2
STANDING WAVES
• Is caused by the constant constructive and destructive interference of two waves traveling towards each other

WHO CARES?

STANDING WAVE
• Demo- Standing wave string
• You try- slinky with a partner
5
DIFFRACTION• Def’n- Waves can ‘bend’ in a rather unusual way
when they reach the edge of an object
• The amount of diffraction ('spreading' or 'bending' of the wave) depends on the wavelength and the size of the object
6
DIFFRACTION
• White light can diffract and be separated into its different colours
• It is also how we can see a lunar eclipse, the sun’s light rays bend around the moon allowing us to still see it occuring
