ATEX is the abbreviation for “Atmospheres Explosive” Directive 94/9/EC
In effect in Europe since 2003
Similar to the NEC Class and Division system and addresses potentially explosive atmospheres
Accepted widely outside of North America
Enclosure Protection Methods Protection methods vary based on the gas or dust and the
likelihood of combustion
The applicable standard for enclosures is EN60079
In place of a Class or Division, hazardous areas are rated based on their Zones
ATEX
Standards PP-00044 C
ATEX Zones
Area Area
Zone 0 A place where an explosive atmosphere consisting of air mixed with flammable vapor or mist in the form of a gas that is persistent for long periods of time or frequently
Zone 20 A place where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a cloud of combustible dust is present continuously or frequently for long periods of time
Zone 1 A place where an explosive atmosphere consisting of air mixed with flammable vapor or mist in the form of a gas that is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally
Zone 21 A place where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a cloud of combustible dust is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation
Zone 2 A place where an explosive atmosphere consisting of air mixed with flammable vapor or mist in the form of a gas that is not likely to occur in normal operation, but if it does would be present only for a short period of time
Zone 22 A place where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a cloud of combustible dust is not likely to occur in normal operation, but if it does would be present only for a short period of time

CE is the abbreviation for conformité européenne
Comprised of 18 countries
Union of countries eliminates separate electrical requirements
An enclosure is NOT ELIGIBLE for a CE Mark
Inactive component part
Application of the CE Mark is the responsibility of the final equipment manufacturer
