Standards and Interoperability Registry
• A well-populated and representative SIR is essential to success of GEOSS– for designation in registration process– valuable in determining where communities can be
brought together to maximize opportunities for interoperability
• Interoperability w/ CSR nearing completion– Integrated testing to be completed by mid-Feb
• System for review of the current 140 SIR entries– Using workflow system– Final testing and training in coming weeks– Linkages to SIR being implemented
Experts Database
• Online database created– Contributor registration form available– Initial population from SIF membership and Call
for Participation responses– RTs requested to develop regional lists
• AIP-2 is generating entries and expects reasonable response times
• Need to assemble a set of contributors with broad expertise
SIF Contributor Registration Form
•Uses credentials common w/ CSR
•Can register as general contributor or designate one or more domains of expertise.
•Can designate an RT to affiliate with
Regional Team Status
• Draft RT guidelines document distributed to SIF• Uptake of tasks by RTs yet to happen• RTs selectable in expert registration form:
Europe/Africa China
North America Australia/New Zeland
South America India/SE Asia
Japan
Interoperability in Draft Targets & Workplan
• Excerpt from Draft Targets:– “Identify an essential set of recognized standards
and interoperability arrangements ... reducing the number of interoperability arrangements by progressive convergence.”
• Workplan Management Document– “Task teams must ensure that components
incorporate the GEOSS interoperability standards and comply with the GEO data sharing principles.”
• Many datasets are proposed or under development in workplan (DA and US)– Task sheets should mention registration and
adoption of GEO standards
SIF Future Plans
• Interoperability with Best Practices Registry– Will begin initial discussions in Feb/Mar
• Taxonomy and Ontology activities– Finalize new taxonomy– Incorporate into the SIR– Interaction w/ Ontology task?
• RT Lead Kickoff meeting– RT Guidelines Document written– After review and comments on guidelines
Interoperability Process Pilot Project Status
• The ADC started the IP3 at its 7/2006 meeting in Seattle
• It explored, documented and demonstrated a process for achieving interoperability among diverse domains
• A prototype involving climate and biodiversity data was demonstrated at the Cape Town Plenary
• Concepts and components developed under the biodiversity scenario now part of AIP-2
• Framework for Model Interoperability being advanced
Modeling Process Framework
• GEOSS must address interoperability aspects of contributed systems including observing, modeling and information systems.
• Interoperability for modeling resources requires careful analysis of the domain and related IT components and artifacts.
• Technology report proposed – AIP and IP3 will benefit– Reference for SIF and will be posted on Best
Practices Wiki
Questions?
New features in SIR 2.0• Interoperability with CSR• More information acquired for each submission• Interoperability with SIF workflow system• More search capabilities• Draft submission capability• Modification history for each record• Tracking of status changes (includes notification to
CSR):– Promotion from special arrangement to standard– Retirement and supersedence– Withdrawal and deletion
Issues
• Facilitate convergence on standards & SA– law of market– Now able to link stds to component services– Desirability, approaches– Achieving buy-in
• AR-09-03: Data, metadata standards for GTOS• Other "Big Picture" interoperability issues
SIR Status Update
• New features in SIR 2.0– Interoperability with CSR– More information acquired for each submission– Interoperability with SIF workflow system– More search capabilities– Draft submission capability– Modification history for each record– Tracking of status changes (includes notification to
CSR):• Promotion from special arrangement to
standard• Retirement and supersedence• Withdrawal and deletion
• DA-09-01: Data Management – b) Data, Metadata and Products Harmonisation (former DA-06-04) Facilitate
the development, availability and harmonization of data, metadata, and information products commonly required across diverse societal benefit areas through identification of schemas, dictionaries, etc, that will become part of the GCI registries and operations. Coordinate data management approaches that encompass a broad perspective of the observation data life-cycle – from input to processing, archiving, and dissemination, including reprocessing, analysis and visualization of large volumes and diverse types of data and information products. Coordinate the development with the interoperability efforts of AR-09-01 with particular focus on the SIF, the standards and special arrangements registry and best practices wiki.
• DA-09-02 Coordinate data management approaches for data modeling and information products.. Enable users to (i) more effectively define processes to efficiently generate information products through modeling and analyses and (ii) utilize large volumes of data from heterogeneous data sources.
• ST-09-02 .. A strong GEO engagement from the Science and Technology community would contribute to: (i) Connect disciplines to address the complex issues of the global integrated Earth system; (ii) Improve interoperability between global observing systems, modelling systems, and information systems; ...
