    HOME INVASION

Three men went to a house in a quiet area of Sacramento. They wanted to rob the people who

lived there but they did not succeed. In fact, it turned out bad for one of the men.

The three men arrived at the house at 9.00 a. m. on Wednesday. After parking their car outside

a beer bar opposite the house, they went to the front door and rang the doorbell.

The 23-year-old owner of the house answered the door still in his bathrobe. One of the robbers

pointed a gun at him and ordered him to allow them inside.

While the owner of the house obeyed the robbers demands, a friend who was staying with the

owner ran to the living room and got out a gun from a drawer. When she returned, police say

she began to shoot at the robbers. In the incident the owners pet dog was killed and one of the

    men got shot.

Eventually the attackers ran away without taking anything. The one who was shot went to an

area hospital for treatment where he was arrested for what he did.

The owner of the house admitted he had drugs inside his home. This might be the reason why

the three men wanted to break in.

questions. Keep your answers as short as possible. Question 0 is an example. Write your final answers on the ANSWER SHEET.

    GAINING CONTROL

Control of weapons was one of the top priorities for SFOR in Bosnia and

Herzegovina. SFOR forces established good cooperation with the local people. Whenever

they got information from the local population about hidden weapons a collection mission

was carried out. Lt. Col. Gnter describes one such operation in the Foca area.

The specialised personnel of the German force set to work. The SFOR soldiers were

not welcomed by the house owners: "We don't have any weapons", said the head of the first

household, a restaurant owner. His wife added: "You are making my floor all dirty. Who is

going to clean up that mess?"

To avoid any later problems, all the houses had been photographed before the

search. Five minutes later the first two hand-grenades were seized. "You know, we have just

bought a new car which we must protect against theft," the owner of the house claimed.

The Belgian policeman who took part in the action found some explosives with detonators

inside the washing machine and rifles and pistols in the basement. A total of 23 rifles, three

pistols, 17 hand grenades, four anti-personnel mines, and 200 grams of explosives plus

detonators were found in this house. They were certainly not all needed to protect a car.

The operation had been registered, and an International Police Task Force officer

from the Netherlands was also present. Nothing escaped the highly trained German

specialists. The result of this operation is worth mentioning: almost 60 rifles, 20,000 rounds

of ammunition, 88 hand grenades, 12 mines and almost 11 kilograms of explosives were

    collected from only six houses.

    ARMY SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

The British Army School of Education is located at RAF Worthy Down. It offers a number of

courses to service members and also to foreign military personnel. The Potential Officers Development

Course (PODC) is designed to assist military personnel in their preparation for officer training.

Very few of the rank-and-file soldiers aiming to become officers go through university. Many of

these people are very bright, although sometimes perhaps their education stopped at an early stage.

Unit commanders recommend only those soldiers and NCOs who have qualities which are desirable in

potential officers. The course, which is 14 weeks long, will then develop those qualities in students.

As well as training students in military skills, the school introduces them to aspects of culture. By

taking them to the opera and museums it provides them with experience they missed while fighting in

Iraq or Afghanistan. Each student will have to organize one of the course activities, for example, a trip or

a sports competition. He is also responsible for briefing the participants of the course on that activity. The

statistics show that 60% of PODC graduates successfully pass the entrance exams to the Royal Military

    Academy Sandhurst.
