Staley Hall is a Grade II* listed building dating from the 16th Century, originally timber framed and occupied until the mid 20th Century. By the 1990’s the hall had fallen into serious disrepair with the internal timber oak frame seriously decayed and generally collapsed. The Hall was on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register. Persimmon purchased the property to convert into apartments. The structural concept was developed at an early stage and maintained. In particular the scheme avoided costly and probably impractical underpinning and served to maintain a maximum of the external fabric with minimum intervention. H. Smith, Salford The structural requirement was to provide support to apartments at three floor levels and a new roof and maintain the stability of the external walls. The solution involved the construction of a load bearing masonry inner structure founded on a raft type foundation independent of the existing building. In-situ concrete floors cast on permanent formwork provided restraint to the outward leaning rear wall. The new oak framed roof is supported on the upper floor
