Jump Strategy

Example:

Using playing cards (remove the picture cards), turn over three cards. Make a 2-digit number and a 1-digit

Split Strategy

Use the above example to remind you of the split strategy.

Roll a dice 4 times. Each time you roll the dice write the number down.

For example – If you roll

Then start at 44 and roll again. Keep subtracting until you get to 0. To make it harder, start at 100. To make it easier, start at 30. You can use the attached hundreds grid to help. Count by 10’s.

You may like to watch this video to help you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7stosHbZZZg

Focus – Subitizing

Subitizing is instantly recognising ‘how many’ are in a small collection of objects without having to count e.g. recognising the dot configuration on a dice that represents 5 instantly without having to count the dots.

You will need:

- copy of the below image (attached)

50 - 6 = 44. Then start at 44 and roll again. Keep subtracting until you get to 0. To make it harder, start at 100. To make it easier, start at 30. You can use the attached hundreds grid to help.

Focus – Length

Measure a broom and investigate what different objects could fit along its length.

Write your object and how many times they would fit the length of the broom.

Then start at 44 and roll again. Keep subtracting until you get to 0. To make it harder, start at 100. To make it easier, start at 30. You can use the attached hundreds grid to help. Activity: Length Maths LEGO Length Challenge Use Lego bricks (or if you don't have LEGO, you could use pegs or blocks) to measure the length of some of your toys at home.

For example – If you turn over a 4,5 and 7.

45 +7=

Draw a number line (straight line) and complete the sum using the jump strategy.

Complete 10 questions using the jump strategy for addition

Year 2 –

Complete the same task as the Year 1’s except turn over 4 cards and make two, 2-digit numbers.

For example – If you turn over 3,4,2,1

34+21 =

Draw a number line and complete the sum using the jump strategy.

Complete 10 questions using the jump strategy for addition.

Make two, 2-digit numbers

Year 1 students can make the numbers smaller such as:

45 +13 =

or make a 2-digit number and a 1-digit number.

45 + 3 =

Solve the question using the split strategy. Remember to add the tens, then the ones.

See if you can complete 10 sums using this strategy.

See if you can say the number shown before seeing the numeral appear.

Roll your 2 dice, recognise the numbers, add the numbers together, then find the same number on your grid. Place a counter on this box. Keep rolling until you have all boxes covered.

Activity: Length WHO HAS THE BIGGEST HEAD IN THE FAMILY? Students measure around their family’s heads with string or paper strips and mark correctly without overlapping the string. Year 1: Measure the length in units (paperclips, lego etc.) to find who has the biggest head in the family. Record the measurements and the units used. Use approximate language to explain parts of units, “about half a unit,” eg. Dad’s head is about 15 paperclips. Year 2: Measure the length in centimetres using a ruler or tape measure. Record the measurements and the units used.

Brain Sprint:

Count backwards from 103-80. Time yourself and see if you can do it faster the second time!

Make sure you line up the bricks carefully so they are touching and not overlapping! Please use the same type of brick so your informal units are accurate. Take a photo of your toys with the Lego bricks alongside them. Write or type how many bricks long each toy is. Make sure you use words like: longest/longer than, shortest/shorter than when talking about your answer. Challenge(optional): Year 2 measure your lengths using a ruler or tape measure. Write your measurements in cm (centimetres)

Brain Sprint:

Count backwards from 93-70. Time yourself and see if you can do it faster the
