Hear Her Roar Honoring a Famous American during Black History Month

Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, passed away from pancreatic cancer on August 16, 2018 in Detroit,

Michigan. Her music was more than just songs. They spoke about equality, truth, peace, and justice.

Her Background Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942. Memphis is well known for its musical strings in

Blues, Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll. When Aretha was 2 years old, her and her family moved to Detroit. Aretha grew up in a large house with her 5 siblings, her mother, and her father. Aretha’s father was a Baptist Minister for New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit. She grew up singing in the church. There, she learned how to play the piano which helped her to understand how to tune her own music and find the right pitch needed for her songs.

Music Career When Aretha was 18, she signed a contract with Columbia Records. She only released 3 singles

before leaving the company and transferring to Atlantic Records. From there on she started releasing

music that hit high on music charts. When she was at Atlantic Records she released more hits of the

century such as Baby I Love You, A Natural Women and Chain of Fools. She won 2 Grammy awards and was

nominated for 8 other awards including Best Female R&B Singer. As Aretha got older, her music became

more serious. During the Civil Rights Movement, Otis Redding and Aretha released a single called

Respect. The song was about equality, peace and justice for Americans. As the years went by, she

continued to release music, making more and more hits,and finally, honored with the nickname “Queen of

Soul”. In the mid 70’s, she slowly started to lose the interest of the people, as Disco was becoming

more mainstream. Around this time, she took a break from the industry since her father had passed and she had wanted to be there for her family. Slowly, the public began to give their attention back to Aretha Franklin, and she proceed to release hit after hit. In 2003, Aretha left Atlantic Records, a label where she had been for 23 years, and started her own label. In 2011, she released her first album from her self-made label called A Woman Falling Out Of Love, as this marked her 50th year in the music industry.

Her DeathSadly, Aretha passed away last year on August 16th at the age of 76. She passed away leaving an

inspiring story of a talented songwriter, singer, and activist.

This issue, the Onhan Echo surveyed the third, fourth, and fifth grade on their predictions about the fate of Groundhog Day. The students voted on whether or not Phil the groundhog would see his shadow this February 2nd.

If you didn’t already know, Groundhog Day is an American holiday that takes place on February 2nd. The actual holiday began in 1887. The man who decides it all is the very own Phil the Groundhog! Phil lives in his quiet underground home in the Gobbler’s Knob, or in other words, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. On February 2nd, Phil will peek out not knowing if he will see his shadow or not. If he does see his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil doesn’t,there will be an early spring. So, all Onahan has to do is wait and see what this year's Groundhog Day has in store for us!

When I started teaching dance:I started teaching dance last year and continued this year.

The hardest part about the program:We only have 10 classes together. It would be nice to have more.

My opinion on the switch between grades:I wish the 6th and 5th graders could get another chance to do it together but am happy to work with the 4th graders this year.

Dancing For A Heart

If you enjoyed the Fun Run that took place in the beginning of the school, then you will surely like the Kids Heart Challenge! Onahan has recently decided to be one of the many following schools that participate in the Kids Heart Challenge. The Kids Heart Challenge is where for 2 weeks straight, starting from February 22nd to March 8th, kids donate money and once they hit a certain amount of donations they will receive prizes! One of those prizes is an Echo keychain! Echo is one of the characters involved for the Kids Heart Challenge. You are able to submit your donations on their website, heart.org/kidsheartchallenge. All donations will go towards more gym equipment for our students. In the end, the class with the most donations will receive a dance party!

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?As years go by, we, human beings, are adapting and evolving in not only ourselves but in the

world as well. Although, our world is evolving, our production of pollution is rising. Pollution is one of the participants in global warming. When we think of global warming, we think of something like Save the Polar Bears! Though, what is global warming? Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere caused by increased levels of greenhouse gasses.

TEMPERATURE STATISTICSAs each year passes the Earth proceeds to get warmer and warmer. Looking at current scientific

records by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) the four warmest years on record have happened since 2014. This change in temperature is causing snow cover and sea ice to melt, seasonal temperature extremes, and a change in plant and animal habitats.

There are many people who believe that global warming is happening and there are also many who doubt that climate change is occurring and that humans are to blame. It is a current debate in society. The Echo staff was able to get both sides of this topic.

It's just a Hoax!“Global warming is fake. The earth naturally goes through cycles of temperature changes. If you

think about it, how can a single human have the power to change Earth's climate? The earth has been cooler than it is now and warmer than it is now. How isn’t this just another wave of natural climate change. Humans can destroy wildlife, but not the earth's climate. It has been here before us and it will be here after us. Animals, plants, and life is temporary but the climate isn’t. I believe that this is just another lie for people to buy new “green” products and invest in these new things. Its been created to steal from people and cause people to waste their money in another way. Maybe soon this too will go out of fashion and a new fade or hoax will take over. Or maybe not. But everything comes to an end, and so will this hoax.”

the pollution and artificial products that are entering and filling up our air? There are many ways that we humans can help end global warming. One way that we can help is by saving fresh water. Another way that you can help is by recycling and reusing to limit the amount of waste and pollution. Limiting your will lower the amount of methane in our atmosphere. We need to make sure we start changing everything about the way we live, eat, and work to be able to save ourselves and our planet. This situation will affect our generation and even more. History Of Valentine’s

Day

Valentine’s Day, the day of love and affection towards one another, is on a Thursday this year. When you think of Valentine’s Day, you think of something like having a crush on someone, but it’s not always like that. Valentine’s Day is about love, and that love might go to your friends or family members. Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year but, how far back does it really go?

Valentine’s Day was created over 1,500 years ago in honor of St. Valentine. St. Valentine was a Christian priest who helped a Roman soldier get married, but under Roman rules you were not allowed to follow the ways of Christianity. Valentine was then executed. Many men and women wanted to honor him so they created Valentine’s Day.

Every year from February 13th to the 15th the Romans would have grand feasts and giant parades honoring the love that St. Valentine brought to them. Even today we would make cards and secret notes for the people we love and admire the most.

Cupid

Cupid, who is a winged baby that carries a gold-colored bow and a heart for an arrow, is a well known Valentine’s Day character. Romans believed Cupid was the son of the Greek goddess Venus, the goddess of love. Cupid was known for piercing the hearts of those he wished to fall in love.

PS4 or XBox One? Which one should you buy? You could ask a friend for their opinion, but I will give you the facts. They both are one of the most popular game consoles.

If you’re a Fortnite player and don’t like to spend money then you should buy a PS4. XBox has a feature called XBox Live. XBox Live gives you access to play games online, but it costs 60 dollars a year. PlayStation has the same feature called PlayStation Plus. You don’t need PlayStation Plus to play Fortnite, but on an XBox,it is necessary to have XBox Live. If you like Roblox, then get an XBox One. PlayStation doesn’t have Roblox. If you have PS Plus or XBox you get free games monthly. PlayStation is compatible with Bluetooth devices. XBox One is backwards compatible, which means you can play certain XBox 360 games. If you look in the PlayStation store you can find PS2 games such as GTA 3, Bully, and Star Wars.

PlayStation has a thing called PS Now, which is an app where you can play PS2 and PS3 games. It’s $10 a month and the controllers are very different. PS4’s analog sticks are next to each other, but the XBox analog sticks are diagonal from each other. XBox's players complain that the PS4 controllers are uncomfortable. The PS4 controller is larger and has an LED light on it. The XBox controller is smaller and has a light on the logo.

PS4 and XBox both have exclusive games only for XBox or PS4. The X-Box is shaped like a rectangular prism and the PS4 is shaped like those pink erasers we use in school.

So which one should you choose? It is your personal preference.

The Den Super Bowl

This year the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams went head to head in Super Bowl 53.

The Patriots faced the Kansas City Chiefs in the conference championships winning by one touchdown in overtime 37-31.

The Rams faced the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, January 20th. Most were not expecting the Rams to make the Super Bowl considering how good the Saints did this year. The Rams and Chiefs were tied 23-23 at the end of the 4th, causing both Conference Championships to go into overtime.

The Patriots have not been taken down in the AFC but some teams in the NFC come out with the lucky hand in the end. The Patriots are 5-5 in the Super Bowl and they will join Buffalo and Miami as the only teams to appear in 3 straight Super Bowl wins. These 2 teams have met before on the grand stage in 2001.

The New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3. Sadly, many people felt the game and halftime show was not as exciting as many expected.

This is the 4th year in a row the Patriots have made the Super Bowl. They have made it this far 17 times in the past and now hold 6 Super Bowl titles. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers with six Super Bowl wins.

The Den Super Bowl - Football Stats - Post-Season

total touchdowns and a total of 527 points as a team. They had a total of 6,738 yards and 4,507 yards came from passing and 2,231 yards rushing this season. The Rams offense turned the ball over 18 times this season as opposed to getting 30 of their own turnovers this season. This Rams defense has given up a total of 384 points and just 5,737 yards. The Rams defense gave up 3,780 yards passing and 1957 yards rushing. The Rams have had a statistically good offense while their defense is ranked middle of the pack. The Rams offense averaged 32.4 points per game and had 420.4 yards per game. The Rams defense gave up 351.4 yards a game and gave up an average of 23.8 points per game. The Rams ended up finishing the Season 13-3-0 which led them to an NFC West Division Title and now played in the Super Bowl, losing 13-3.

Patriots Regular Season Stats- The Patriots offense have scored a total of 47 touchdowns and have scored a total of 436 points as a team this season. The Patriots have had a total of 6,295 yards and 3,943 came from the passing game while 2,037 came from the rushing. The Patriots offense turned the ball over a total of 18 times while their defense got the offense the ball 28 times. The Patriots defense gave up 325 points and 5,746 yards. 3,943 of those yards came from opposing teams passing attack while the other 1803 yards came from the opposing teams rushing game. The Patriots defense would be considered Upper/Middle class while the offense is considered a top tier bunch with them averaging 28.6 points per game. The offense had averaged 406 yards a game while their defense allowed an average of 353.9 yards a game. The Patriots defense had given up an average of 21.3 points a game. The Patriots finished the regular season with a record of 11-5 which won them the AFC East division. The Patriots faced the Rams last Sunday, winning 13-3.

New Spiderman:Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse is an action-packed, fun-filled, and great

family movie. It’s about a boy named Miles Morales, who finds himself through the eyes behind the mask. It teaches about family, love, and the sacrifices made to do the right thing. Even though all the Spidermans’ live in different dimensions and have different appearances, their stories are the same. This brings them closer together as a team to help one another get back home, and that anyone can be behind the mask. Throughout the movie, many things are stated, and at the end, all are brought back for the final fight. For example, Parker told Miles that he needs to take a leap of faith for knowing when he’s ready to be Spiderman. At the end, Miles tells him to take a leap of faith with Mary Jane when he goes back to his dimension. We thought this was a clever and sweet way of being nostalgic, and to wrap up the movie.

Grade: A

Old Spiderman:Spider-Man was an animated television series made in 1967, with each episode

about 15 minutes long. It jumps right into the conflict, but since it does, you don’t know who the characters are. But, it is quite entertaining to see the original Peter Parker fight the crime without anyone knowing who he is.

Grade: B+

Overall Review: Overall, both showings were fun and action-packed, but the new Spiderman took much more time to explain the characters’ pasts and show how they all came to be Spiderman. Also, in the new Spiderman, you can pick up the lesson being taught, which is to do the right thing even if times are tough and to always put others before yourself. There really is no lesson in the television show, just entertainment, hence why we liked the new one better.
