Connecting Churches to Change Our World
LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.
That is a strange place to start a church What were you thinking? Do you ever think about the beautiful buildings the early church used when starting churches? They met in the courtyard of the temple, in synagogues, by river banks and mostly in homes. They met in graveyards and catacombs. They had meetings by the lake and on hills. You can stand in a boat (without a motor) and be heard by a lot of people on the bank. They met in banquet rooms, in homes, and in upper rooms. If they ever had a church building it was never mentioned. Even today, most churches begin as Bible studies in a home. They might graduate to a school building, a park, or a store front. In the last 20 years I have also seen churches start in funeral homes, warehouses, strip malls, tents, rodeo arenas, fair grounds, barns, hotel conference rooms, saloons, banks, VFW halls, club houses, and restaurants. There was even a little brown church on a barge that was used to start churches all over the Louisiana bayous. George Whitfield preached from his father’s grave in the cemetery because there was no law that could prohibit it. He could be heard clearly for a mile away. Every church starts first in the heart of God. The first concern is not where the church (the body) is to meet, but rather what does God want? He will provide the place when we need it. Funds and resources follow life. The God who provides grace in the “nick of time” is faithful to provide just the right place at the right time. A former evangelism director for the Texas Baptist Convention earlier served under the Home Mission Board. He started 21 churches and made a circuit preaching at them. They were spread across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They met in bars, restaurants, stores, buildings which were not rented. Of those, 19 became established churches. Many of the bar owners became believers and donated their building. It is great to have a nice place to meet, but it is even better to build a body of believers who learn that “My God will supply your needs according to His riches in glory.” (Philippians 4:19) That is a strange place to witness Bars, restrooms, trailers in the desert. They are not coming to us; Jesus said, “Go.” We have to cross over from our “safe place” to their turf. You can fish in a bucket in the back yard; but if you really want to catch fish, go where they are.
CHURCH PLANTING by Stewart Pickle, D.Min.
Tim could not catch this Halibut in his backyard. He had to go out into the Cook Inlet from the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. (Tim Batchelor is a DOM in Thompson, GA)

“STAND OUT – Making a Difference in my Church.”
September 13, 2014
This is the multi-class, Church-wide Training First Baptist Church, Conroe 600 N. Main Street Conroe, TX 77301
The first time I prayed for her I did not know her name. It was a September morning and I was in the left turn lane on Great Southwest Parkway and was waiting on the light. Our son had just been born a few days earlier, brought home, and was now breaking our nights into unmanageable moments of sleep. I barely had the clarity to drive much less pray. But then the prayer came out of my mouth, “Lord, I don’t know where she is but please bless the girl you have for our son.”
That was it. The first prayer for the unkonwn her. It wouldn’t be the last.
On a regular basis I would find myself praying for her intentionally but often spontaneously. I would see a little girl playing in the park and would call out to God, “Lord, let her grow up with joy and in a safe place”. We would be in a shopping area and I would see a girl in a stroller and my heart would utter, “Lord, let her have parents who love her and show her the wonder of who you are.” We would place our son in the nursery at church and a little girl would be in the adjoining crib and my soul would echo, O Lord, let her come to know you as her personal savior early in life.”
And so it went, month after month, year after year, I would find myself prompted to pray by the daily events of life.
At a meal, “Lord, please provide for her physical needs.” At a concert, “Father, help her to see the wonder of your creation and the beauty of life.” At a family reunion, “Lord, give her a loving family to be nurtured and encouraged.” At a ballgame, “Father, give her the joy of play.” Watching TV, “Lord, please guard her heart and keep it close to you.”
On and on, life would happen and the prayers would flow. The prayers would not be just for the “her” who my son would marry one day. I found myself praying for the ones who prompted the prayers. The middle school girl walking alone on campus prompted prayers for her to have close friends. The girls I passed as I went to a meeting who were gathered together waiting for a school bus would be the occasion for prayers that they would be safe and protected. As the years went by the prayers changed but the desire was always the same – that she would know Christ, grow in grace, and experience the wonder of God’s heart for her.
Hundreds. Thousands of prayers were prayed. I had prayed for her for so long and so regularly that when we met for the first time I knew. She was the “her”. She was God’s best. She was God’s answer to all of those prayers.
Their love story is their story. My story about their story is only understood in the root-bed of prayer.
I’m looking forward to blessing their union with prayer. I know my journey of prayer is not over – it’s adjusting. Now I get to pray for them by name, both of them. But I am still prompted to pray when I see a young man or woman walking down the street of our neighborhood, “O Lord, let them come to Christ, protect them from the challenges of life, show them the glory of who you are, keep them till they meet the one to whom they are to give their heart …” I can’t stop praying – it’s too much of who I am now.
In Kingdom service, Preston and Hilary will be married this coming June in Boston. They will move to Waco where she is entering the PhD program in Philosophy at Baylor while he is completing his second book. Photo courtesy of Ebersole Photography
