PRSN MISSION

The mission of the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) is to monitor and rapidly determine the location and size of all earthquakes and support NTWC to determine the Tsunami alert level in the Area of Responsibility (AOR) and to immediately disseminate this information to concerned agencies, scientists, and the general public. The PRSN compiles and maintains an extensive seismic database of earthquake parameters, continuous waveforms (earthquakes, GPS and sea level) and their effects which serve as a solid foundation for basic and applied earth science/oceanography research in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

PRSN HISTORY

1903 - First seismic station in Vieques, Fuerte el Conde1972 - First short period instrument installed in the UPRM1974 - The USGS installed a short period network for the PR EPA (Electrical Power Authority)1982 - The EPA transfer the network to the Centro para la Investigación de Energía y Ambiente1987 - The network is transferred to the UPRM – Geology1991 - The IASPEI and Soufrier digital systems replace the Lamont-Doherty Intel1997 - Network data acquisition system was moved from Cayey to Mayaguez,1999 - First broadband instruments were installed in PR, 2003 - BroadBand data included into the daily process,2006 - Tsunami ready tide gauges installed in PR,2007 - 24/7 hours operation,2008 - GPS network installed2015 - Infrastructure upgrade

-The Caribbean plate is bounded by the North America plate to the north, and the South America plate to the south. To the west, the Cocos plate subducts beneath the Caribbean.Linear velocities can be predicted using:-CA-NA Euler vector: 75.2°N -177.4°E, 0.250 °/Myr-CA-SA Euler vector: 57.6°N -69.3°E, 0.233 °/Myr López et. al.
