STAGE 3B1YOUNG ADULT READERS

BRONTË SISTERS AND THE ‘WOMAN QUESTION’THE ‘WOMAN Question’ interested Brontë scholars and literature lovers from around the world to Manchester to mark Jane Eyre author Charlotte’s 200th anniversary in April 2016. Speakers presented a variety of papers on the position of women in the mid-19th Century as the ‘Woman Question’ was a relevant topic in the mid-1800s when the Brontë sisters were writing their renowned novels.

Speakers explored Charlotte’s response to the issue in her own writing during the conference at the Midland Hotel last month. Kitty Wright, executive director of the Brontë Society, said that conference was successful; 120 Brontë scholars and literature enthusiasts participated from around the globe. The event also saw the launch of a new book published by the Brontë Society to mark the bicentenary, called Celebrating Charlotte Brontë and written by Christine Alexander and Sara L. Pearson. There will be further discussions at the museum to remember the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charlotte Brontë, focusing on the relationship with her father Patrick, early responses to her published writing and the changing author’s points of view since her death.
