General Descriptions of the Products

For more than 5 years in electric power, petrifaction, light industry, coal industry, paper industry, steel and other industries, more than 100 thousand ST500 intelligence type electric motor controllers have been put into AC motor protection and control operation, which have accumulated a great deal of practical experience in engineering. On this basis, the ST500M/H Series intelligence type AC motor controller, a new generation of enhanced high-performance with microprocessor technology have emerged as the time requires. Working with contactor, soft starter,plastic moulded case circuit-breaker, the production provides a complete set of special solution to the low voltage AC motor including control, protection, monitoring and bus communication, replacing thermal relay, thermal protector, leakage protector, under-voltage protector and other protectors, canceling time relay, auxiliary relay , CT , meter, control and selection switching, indicator lighting, programmable controller, transmitter and other added components, which make the product the ideal choice of intelligent MCC.

Uses 16 bits high-performance industrial grade microprocessor special protocol chip,

ASIC, directly sampling three-phase AC currents, three-phase AC voltages, thermal

resistance, 4-20mA analog value, leakage current; computer Current Imbalance Rates,

earthing current.

Protection function: The product is provided with many kinds of protection function, only

needs a simple choice to realize the protection or on /off, alarm / trip;

Overload “time-current characteristic” meets the standard of GB/T14048.4 -2003, and

increases more tripping rank, to satisfy the heavy load starting requirements.

“The tE time protection” meets the hot over-load protection standard of GB3636.3-2000 for

the safety-enhanced explosion-proof motors.

“Temperature protection” monitors the situation of giving off heat of the motor directly,

meets the standard of GB/T14048.X -200X " Low-voltage switchgear and control device----

Control units for built-in thermal protection for rotating electrical machines ".

“Leakage current protection”: sampling through the special-purpose transformer, the

measurement sensitivity is higher, meeting the standard of GB/T14048.4 -2001 appendix B;

process control and interlocking protection: through the inputs of digital value and the

inputs 4-20mA analog value it can realize a part of the non-electrical control and

protection of process interlocking

The reasonable starting protection: monitoring the starting process automatically,

distinguishing the initial starting-up current and the fault current effectively, ensuring

that the protection function does not have the misoperation, at the same time, uses many

ways such as the starting overtime and the starting over-current protection to realize the

starting-up protection.

Resolve “the over-current blind area protection”, diagnosis the fault current size

automatically, monitor correctly the over-current fault appearing between the breaking

current of the contact device and the short circuit tripping current of plastic casing

circuit-breaker, and control the trip of plastic casing circuit-breaker, to make the

protection more reliable.

The PT broken line monitoring function, (may connect in the secondary contact of MCB),

distinguishing function of the PT broken line or under-voltage protection;

“Fluctuanting electricity” function: Guarantees that the phenomenon of short-time

fluctuanting of the electricity dose not affect the continuity of production for technological

process.

Less Voltage /Lost Voltage Re-starting function: after the main circuit cutting out power

in short-time or supply the power switching over , it can realize the time sharing

sequential starting according to the preset parameters .

Measuring parameters are complete: including current, voltage, power and electrical

energy parameters. The Precision of Current and voltage may reach 0.5 grade.

The transmitter function is stronger: For the internal setting of the 4-20mA analog value

output.It may select many kinds of electric value (current, voltage, power or electrical

energy), and the scope is adjustable;

The control mode is complete : internal setting of the control modes of direct, reversible,

Y-∆, resistor and Autotransformer reducing voltage start, soft start and transducer

starting co-ordination, it only needs the simple choice to realize the different control

function logic transformation, their flexibility and the versatility are very strong;

It has the choice function of operation jurisdiction for“two positions” or “four positions”;

Testing function:It may perform testing operation before the Swicth is being closed

Remember the 8 faults relevant parameters and information: It can record the year, the

month, the day, the hour, the minute, and the second when 8 breakdowns occur , and the

relevant information and parameters .

The maintenance & management of the controller is convenient, it can display the

breakdown parameters, the alarming information, the condition indication, the motor

operating information, the contact device operation life etc, it is advantageous for the

fault analysis, the productive efficiency statistics and the reasonable choice for repairing ;

Integrative design, with the optimization design of protection, monitoring control, and

communication function,it may substitute the ampere meter, the current transformer, the

thermal relay, the leakage protection relay, the transmitting instrument, the push-button,

indicator light etc

The display and indication is intuitionist, it uses Chinese liquid-crystal display, directly

display and indicates each kind of parameter, information and condition;

The multiway relay output function, 7 relays output, 3 control relays (R3 is

independent,can be used for tripping of plastic casing circuit-breaker), 4 signal relays, the

control relay’s contact may directly control AC380 contact device load, also may directly

control DC contact device load;

The multiway digital input function: 12 circuit of digital input with power supply, the

external power supply for ST500M is AC220V, for ST500H is DC220V/DC110V;

The standard communication interface, it may choose several protocols, and it may

choose double communication interfaces to realize redundancy of communication

interface;

The modular structure, the main body, the mutual inductor module, the display module,

the accessories combination etc. make it more convenient, more economical and more

rationalized;

The external dimensions is more reasonable, it may be installed in 1/4 drawers.

The ST500M/H series controller is composed of two parts :the main body and the special-

purpose current transformer module. The external dimensions of main body are unified, the

special-purpose mutual inductor has three kind of frame sizes:100A, 250A, 820A. The ST522B

display module, ZT30/100 special-purpose leakage CT, ST-9 power supply module etc.the TM

Protection function:overload protection,under load protection, over-current protection(stalled), starting-up over-current protection(jammed), the starting acceleration overtime protection, current imbalance phase protection(lacking), earthing protection, external fault alarming, and external fault triping;

Monitoring content: three-phase current, three-phase current imbalance rates, the earth

current, the motor running status, fault information, the alarming information, thermal

capacity;

Note②: After selecting the“voltage function”, the protection function will be increased:with Under voltage protection, over voltage protection, under power protection, phase sequence fault locking function. Monitoring content will be increased: Three-phase voltage, frequency, power factor, active power, kilowatt-hour;Note③: The earthing protection function with the sum of internal three-phase current vectors

Note ④: It can be used in continuous running working, including easy to start-up or the starts not frequently start-up process, which it cannot appear obvious additional temperature rise, and which can be used in over load inverse protection motor with safety enhanced explosion.Note⑤: For the ST500H product its relay output uses 3 DC control relays (DC220V, 3A,

DC110V, 5A) + 4 signal relays (resistant AC250V, 3A), it is applicable in control the make-and-

break of DC220V/DC110V control circuit. For the ST500M, relay outputs: 3 AC control relays

(resistant type AC250V, 8A) + 4 signal relays (resistant type AC250V, 3A).

Note⑥: The ST500H product uses the double-circuit power supply: From Ua, Un to input the

AC220 auxiliary working power fromUa.Un And input the DC220V/DC110V auxiliary

working power supply from A1(+)A2(-).The ST500M product uses the input of AC220

auxiliary working power supply, from A1(+) and A2(-).

Note⑦: ST500M/H all may select and match the communication interfaces,to realize

communication functions of several protocols, the last digital of ST500 denotes the

communication mode: the ST502 indicating provided with the Profibus-DP interface, ST503

indicating provided with the MODBUS interface, ST504 indicating provided with the

DeviceNet interface, ST505 indicating provided with the double MODBUS interface, ST506

indicating provided with the industry Ethernet interface.

For example, “ST503MA-5A-VM2”,indicate Direct start-up mode motor controller, The

provided with control power supply and auxiliary working power supply all of AC220V, rated

current is 5A,and with has MODBUS communication interface, voltage function and analog

value Output.

the memory forcefully,andimmediately start-up the motor.

The hot memory function is of vital significance to the situation of needing to start-up the motor frequently. The controller simulates the thermal capacity of the motor under various kind of running status, and monitors the situation of motor giving off heat in real-time, protected the motor re-starting-up effectively under the superheat condition, which can both use the motor under the maximum limit, and guarantee the security of the motor, so that can guarantee the continuous operation of the motor. The chart shows the thermal capacity schematic diagram for the frequently starting-up operation, only when the thermal capacity cools belowthe “prohibition” line of the chart then the signal of being ready can be sent outfor starting-up, permit to start the motor oncemore.

"The prohibition" thermal capacity is divided into two kinds, one kind with solid thermal capacity decided as 15% (mode1); Another kind with thermal capacity of satisfying only one condition (mode) of the two kinds:(thermal capacity equaling to 100%- thermal capacity produced during last starting-up -2%) or 15%(mode2) .

For motor provided with the imbedded thermal resistance, it may select the controller provided with the hot protection function, which will monitor the motor’s real-time temperature to see whether it has already dropped under the limiting value which was allowed for restarting, if it is YES then the motor is allowed to be restarted, otherwise the motor cannot be restarted.

Overload current-time characteristicsThe overload protection provides 16 kinds of inverse-time protection characteristic curve,

including 10A, 10, 20, 30 etc many kinds of tripping classes, which may be chosen and may realize the heavy load starting-up function. The user may choose their needing inverse-time protection tripping curve according to the actual engineering situation , the protection characteristic curves will be kept in EEPROM of the controller after the computing the analog value. The action value, the restoration mode, the permitted restart-up thermal capacity, the protection acting curve, the cooling time, the cold and hot curve ratio all may be completely adjusted through the protection setting.

by overload fault,and the thermal capacity drops to below the permission starting thermal capacity, the fault cannot be cleared automatically, which needs to be reset manually, otherwise it will not allow the motor to start.

Under load protection

When the transmission belt breaks or the water pump running without any load, the motor can appear the phenomenon of under load, which will bring the equipment damage.

It can be judged whether the load protection it shall be started or not according to the mean value of the motor’s three-phase currents.

The over current protection (jammed)

It can be judged whether the motor has over current fault or not according to the ratio of the biggest line current observed value and the motor rate current value. If the observed value of current

is bigger than the set value, then starts the over

current protection.

Contactor’s breaking ability protection

The permited breaking ability of the common contactor is 6~8 times of the rated current. If the contactor is operated when the circuit current is surpassing the scope, it will bring the damage to the contactor, and will cause the accident further spreaded. When short current fault occurs, controller will decide whether to separate the contactor or not by judging the fault current of the motor circuit whether it is bigger than the contactor’s greatest breaking current. If the fault current is smaller than the contactor’s greatest breaking current, the protection is carrying out by separating contactor. If the fault current is bigger than the contactor’s greatest breaking current, the controller will not separate the contactor, but separate the MCCB through a special relay output to cut off the motor circuit, thus it can realize a more reliable protection. (note: the MCCB shall be provided with the shunt release,)

Starting-up over-current (to stop running protection)

In the starting-up process, it can be judged whether to start the over current protection or not according to the ratio of the biggest line current observed value and the motor rate current . This function only works in the starting-up

process, it will be locked automatically and changed in to running after the starting-up is ended .

Starting-up acceleration overtime protection

After reaching the starting-up acceleration time, controller will decide whether to start the starting-up acceleration overtime protection or not by the judging the current of the motor circuit whether it is dropped to 110%the rate current. In view of the safety-enhanced motor, the starting-up time is not to surpass 1.7 time of the tE time. The chart shows when the starting-up time is T1, because the current hasn’t fallen to below 110%Ir1, it is judged as the starting-up acceleration overtime, the controller will send out the protection signal. When the starting-up acceleration time is T2, it may enter into the normal operation.

tE time protection

It is suitable to be used protecting in two kinds of safety-enhanced motors: easy to started , not frequently started and cannot appear the obvious additional temperature rise. tE time protection has the inverse time characteristic. When the motor reaches the stable temperature under the highest ambient temperature, and the rotor-stalled current appears, the controller will trip and separate the power supply in time tE to assur the motor winding not surpassing the limiting temperature.

The current imbalance protection

Calculates the three-phase imbalance rates separately, according to three-

phase most imbalance rate and the set value of the imbalance protection, we can

compare and judge whether to start the imbalance protection or not. PhaseLack

is the limiting condition of the imbalance. When in phase lack, the imbalance

rate is 100%, and the product will be in protection immediately. The imbalance

rate computing formula is |I-Iav|/Iav. Iav is the mean value of the three-phase

current. when Iav is smaller than the motor’s full load current, the denominator

may be indicated by Ie.

Earthing protection

The earthing protection has the characteristics of definite time-limit and

inverse time-limit protection, its current signal depends on the internal mutual

inductor current vector sum, it is used to protect the short circuit between the

phase line and the motor metal enclosure.

Earthing operation current

characteristics: If the theoretics value ≤

0.5Iq, don’t act; If ≥ 1.0Iq, time-lag act.

Earthing delay time characteristic: T =

Leakage electricity protection

Whether to start the earthing protection or not is determined by the result of

comparing the vector sum secondary current of the three-phase transformer and

the setting value of earthing protection.

The leakage electricity protection needs a special-purpose leakage current

transformer. Whether to start-up the leakage electricity protection function is

determined by the result of comparing the residual current of sampling and the

setting value of leakage protection.

The monitoring current sensitivity is higher when using leakage electricity

protection of sampling mode (it should be selected alternatively, standard

allocation is earthing protection).

Leakage electricity protection characteristics:

When ≤ 0.5IΔn, it doesn’t act, when ≥ 1.0IΔn , it will acts time-delay.

Temperature protection

The temperature protection is mainly realized by measuring the actual

temperature of the motor. It is through the change of PTC/NTC thermal value of

resistance buried in the motor to reflect the temperature change. The controllers

implement the temperature protection to the motor through monitoring the

thermal resistance which is buried in advance in the motor. The protection is an

instantaneous protection.

External fault alarming

External fault alarming is mainly realized through the digital input

connected to the corresponding Alarm DI of the controller. When the controller

receives the DI input, it starts-up the alarming function.

External fault trip

External fault trip is mainly realized through the digital input connected to

the corresponding Trip DI of the controller. When the controller receives the DI

input, it starts-up the trip function by delay action.

Under voltage protection

When the main circuit voltage is lower than the setting value, it will start the

under voltage protection, the under voltage protection can simultaneously

monitor the three-phase voltage signal, and The PT breakdown,which makes the

protection function more reasonable.

Over voltage protection

When the main circuit voltage is higher than the setting value, it will start-

up the over voltage protection; over voltage protection may monitor the three

phase voltage signal simultaneously.

Under power protection

When the motor is running with low load, sometimes it may be due to the

power factor is lower, and the motor current may not be very small. The

controller may implement the protection through measuring the motor’s power

of the motor and make the motor protection more perfect.

Phase sequence locking

When the controller detects the phase sequence fault of the motor, it will

lock the starting-up function, and protects the security of the motor equipment.

4-20mA analog value input protection

The external 4-20mA analog value is connected to the corresponding terminal of the controller; the controller decides whether to start this protection or not. by comparing the examined current value with the setting value. The function of the 4-20mA analog value input protection is mainly used in the interlocking protection of a part of non-electrical values etc.

Various kinds of motor control modes

Under the control of the program, the controller may realize various

different motor starting-up mode, and through the feedback of the contactor’s

auxiliary contact, it can monitor the running status of the contactor, in order to

guarantee the reliability of electric interlocking.

The various required control way of motor has been integrated in the

controller. For choosing of the control mode it needs to carry out the ST522B

display module only.

The control mode is optional: It may be the direct start-up, the reversible

start-up, the two speed start-up, the resistance voltage reducing star-upt, the Y/

△ start-up,the autotransformer Start, the soft starter control, or the transducer

control. Part of control modes may be divided into the open circuit/closed

circuit , two relays/three relays etc. (see the following table):

“Anti-fluctuating electricity” function

After the voltage falling suddenly and the AC contactor is released, the

control contact of the controller does not open, when the power supply is

restored, the motor may go on running, does not need to carry on the starting-up

process. When ST500M is selected, it must select the ST-9 power supply module

simultaneously.

Self-restarting-up function

The controller has the self-restarting-up function after under voltage/lost

voltage. When it is in use, it will realize self-restarting-up. by different ways

according to the time length of the power supply cutting.

When the voltage restores before immediately restarting-up time, the

automatic restarting function will be carried out immediately, by using the

inertia of the motor running it, will continue to maintain the motor in the normal

operation.

When the voltage restores after immediately restarting-up time, but still

before the time-delay restarting-up setting time, the controller will make the

motor starting-up by grouping sequentially, according to the preset delay time.

so that it can prevent the monitor from creating the load to be overweight by

simultaneously starting-up.

When the voltage supply restores after time-delay restarting-up setting time,

the controller will not be able to carry out restarting-up function, if it is required

that the motor be operated,it needs the manual operation.

Auto restart-up

After the function is in use, in the process of electrifying the controller, the

controller will realize the time sharing restarting-up according to the system of

establishing after the power supply restoring.

If the “Auto restart-up” function is established as “permission”, and the

restarting mode is established as “restoration”, the controller will judge whether

the system will restart-up or not according to the condition before power cutting

off. If the motor is in running condition before power cutting off, controller will

automatically start-up the motor according to the delay time set when

electrifying. If the “Auto restart-up” function is established as “permission”, and

the restarting-up mode is established as “starting-up”, the controller will start-

up the motor automatically according to the delay time set when electrifying

directly. If the “Auto restart-up” function is established as “prohibition”, then

the function will be exited.

Motor control purview

ST500M/H operation control purview has two modes. mode one is the "two

positions", mode two is the "four positions"

The"two positions" control purview includes two kinds of controls: “local

control” and “remote control”, by the controlling of terminal "9DI" it can realize

the transformation of control purview, ST522B display module may also carry

out the purview choice. when theST522B display module’s operation purview is

"local control" (key may be locked); the DI’s purview is optional for"local" or

"remote"; the purview of communication interface is "remote control".

The"four positions" control purview includes: key-press operation of

control of ST522B display module, remote"automatic control" of DI terminal

(PLC, DCS etc), "local control” of DI terminal at site(control box at site),
