(1977-1990). He was a gentle and kind soul, always
ready to be of help. The poor, homeless people
flocked here, I’m told, and later they followed him to
Holy Name parish as well. Father not only gave help
to these poor people, but always took time to talk with
them. May the good Lord grant eternal rest to Father
Bill Quinn.
Ascension of the Lord: This Sunday as we celebrate
the Ascension of the Lord, we realize that he lives
with us in Spirit and has asked us to carry on his mis-
sion. The baton has been passed on; his torch is to be
carried to the world. We are Jesus’ hands to help oth-
ers; his feet to hasten to reach the poor and needy; his
eyes to see sadness and suffering; his ears to hear the
sighs of sorrows. That is how we can continue and
complete the mission of Christ entrusted to us. He
will send us the Holy Sprit, whom we’ll celebrate
next Sunday, on Pentecost, the Spirit to empower us
for love and service.
A Story to Ponder: Buddha was once threatened
with death by a bandit called Angulimal.
“Then be good enough to fulfill my dying wish,” said
Buddha. “Cut off the branch of that tree.”
One slash of the sword, and it was done! “What
now?” asked the bandit.
“Put it back again,” said Buddha.
The bandit laughed. “You must be crazy to think any-
one can do that.”
“On the contrary, it is you who are crazy to think that
you are mighty because you can wound and destroy.
That is the task of the cowards. The mighty know
how to create and heal.”
A Catholic Joke: A man joins a monastery and takes
a vow of silence. He's allowed to say two words every
7 years. After the first 7 years, the elders bring him in
and ask him for his 2 words. “Cold floors,” he says.
They nod and send him away. Seven more years pass
and they bring him in for his 2 words. He clears his
throat and says, “Bad food.” They nod and send him
away. Seven more years pass and they bring him in
for his 2 words. “I quit,” he says. “That's not surpris-
ing,” the elders say. “You've done nothing but com-
plain since you got here.”
May the Risen and Ascended Christ fill your families
with peace and joy!
Your Friend & Pastor,
Father Charles Puthota
Dear Parishioners,
First Holy Communion of Faith Formation: Last Sat-
urday May 04th, from our Faith Formation program, 33
children received the First Holy Communion. As you
can imagine, the children and their families were all
excited. Isn’t it amazing that all of us remember our
own First Communion day? We remember the time, the
church, the people, and the sense of awe and grace that
were all connected with that day. That Jesus enters a
whole new relationship with us in union and commun-
ion leaves an indelible mark on our soul, imagination,
and memory. As usual, I encouraged the families to be
inspired by these children’s fervor and faith, devotion
and desire, in ways that we can have our own faith re-
kindled. We need to keep imagining the possibilities of
what we can do as Church for God and people. As the
Pope reminds us, the Church is commissioned to be out-
ward looking, to be an instrument of hope and joy, heal-
ing and transformation, to the whole world. This Satur-
day, 48 more children from our Faith Formation pro-
gram will receive the First Holy Communion from Fa-
ther Linh. My congratulations to the children and their
families, and gratitude to the catechists and Karen, our
Faith Formation Coordinator.
Men’s Club Spring Gala: Last Saturday May 04th, our
Men’s Club held the Spring Gala at the Basque Cultural
Center. It was a fundraiser with raffle and silent auction.
The evening was most enjoyable with fine music and
food. I was delighted at the way the event was orga-
nized by Mike Tringale and his able team. People en-
joyed the dancing as well. We need such social events
for people to come together and grow in friendships.
The Eucharist brings us together and then we go out to
continue to build up community through family and
social events. I would invite and encourage everyone to
participate in such social events. These are ways in
which we strengthen the parish community and provide
for our programs.
Father William Quinn’s Funeral: Father’s funeral
was held at Holy Name of Jesus Church on April 30th. I
joined 20 or so other priests. Some of our parishioners
were present. Bishop McGrath of San Jose was the main
celebrant. Present at the altar were Cardinal Levada,
Archbishop Cordileone, former Archbishop Niederauer,
Bishops Justice and McElroy. Father Michael Quinn,
his nephew, preached the homily. The dear departed’s
priestly qualities, friendliness, and love for the poor
were highlighted. A reception followed the funeral
Mass, and later Father was buried in a private ceremony
at the Holy Cross Cemetery. As you know, Father
Quinn was the second pastor of St. Veronica Parish

There is no love, like a mother’s love,
No stronger bond on earth… like the precious bond that
comes from God, to a mother, when she gives birth.
A mother’s love is forever strong,
never changing for all time… when her children need her most,
a mother’s love will shine.
God bless these special mothers, God bless them everyone…
for all the tears and heartache, for the special work they’ve done.
When her days on earth are over,
a mother’s love lives on… through many generations,
with God’s blessings on each one.
Be thankful for our mothers, For they love with a higher love…
From the power God has given, And the strength from up above.
