Mass Intentions Fr. Del... Points to Ponder We probably all remember a time when the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick was referred to as the “Last Rites” or “Extreme Unction.” Still today, we can hear the media report that somebody famous received the Last Rites by a priest who was summoned.
There are, to be sure, emergency situations in which a person is anointed. The more common way for the Sacrament to be administered today is, as the Rite states, at the beginning of an illness, or in anticipation of a serious medical procedure. And, though the Sacrament is reserved for a more serious illness, it is a Sacrament that can be repeated as needed, in a reasonable period of time.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “The Anointing of the Sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude.” (1520)
In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the priest anoints the seriously ill, injured, or the elderly with the Oil of the Sick. The Oil of the Sick is a special oil used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It is blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week.
In the Rite of the Anointing of the Sick, the priest anoints the sick person on the forehead, saying, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” He also anoints the sick person on the hands, saying, “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen.” The “raising” refers to spiritual healing, as well as any physical healing that may take place.
At Saint Veronica, it has been the custom over the past couple of years to anoint the sick after Masses on the fifth Sunday of month. This practice has been positively accepted by parishioners who have been sick, and a way of planning ahead when a medical procedure is planned. We will try this same practice at St. John Fisher to see if this helps to assure the pastoral care of the sick is readily available. Our next Anointing of the Sick will take place after all Masses on July 28 and 29.

Lay Catholic Studies: The Athenaeum of Ohio Lay Pastoral Ministry Program is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and offers lay Catholics the opportunity to grow in faith, knowledge and skills in order to serve families, communities and the Church more effectively. Since 1975, the LPMP has equipped ordinary Catholics to accomplish extraordinary things in the name of Christ. Weeknight and Saturday classes fit into busy adult schedules, allowing participants to maintain job, family and community commitments while answering a call to deeper discipleship. Classes count toward catechist certification and serve as a prerequisite for application to the permanent diaconate formation. Interviews are now underway for fall classes at the main campus and Good Shepherd in Montgomery. We are offering a 25% lay tuition discount this year. Call 513-231-1200 for information or to set up an interview.
Today, at the 11:30 a.m. MassOur parish will receive two new members into the full Communion of the Catholic Church on June 17, at 11:30 a.m. Mass. From a neighbor’s recommendation, Stacie Flick began to come to church here and found a sense of peace and God’s presence at Mass. She was previously baptized at Crossroads Church. Stacie and her husband Andy have two children, Max and Maddie.During his time training in the National Guard, Glenn Kurtz spent time reading and reflecting on religion. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church, and now has discerned a call to become Catholic. Welcome to both Stacie and Glenn!
