St. Valentine Church Heartline March 25, 2018 Mission Statement: Guided by the Holy Spirit, we strive to live and share the Good News of Jesus Christ so that all may come to know God. As a Catholic Church and School Community we welcome, serve, teach, learn, reconcile and provide comfort and hope in the spirit of St Valentine. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Triduum: The Three Days I would like to invite everyone to join us for the Easter Triduum. The word Triduum is Latin for “Three Days” — signifying the three days leading up to Easter Sunday: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Holy Thursday, March 29, 2018 – We will begin the Triduum with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 PM. This Mass begins the Easter Triduum, and historically includes the Mandatum – or the Washing of the Feet – The Lord Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper as a sign of the new commandment that Christians should love one another: (see John 13, 34-35). For centuries the Church has imitated the Lord through the ritual enactment of the new commandment of Jesus Christ in the washing of feet on Holy Thursday. After Communion at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the priest does not put the Eucharist back into the tabernacle. Instead, he incenses it, and then begins a procession to another place, for us it is the School Chapel, followed by the people. The priest places the Eucharist in a “repository” decorated with flowers. This begins the Passion of the Lord, where Jesus prays in the Garden and sweats great drops of blood (Luke 22:44). Like Peter, James and John, we can pray with Him until midnight ."So, could you not keep watch with Me for one hour” (Mt. 26:40)? On Good Friday: March 30, 2018 - we will have Stations of the Cross at 1:30 PM followed by the Passion Play and then followed by the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 2:30 PM. The Passion Narrative from John’s Gospel is read, and the Crucifix is venerated as the people come up to kiss it. The people receive Communion that was consecrated on Holy Thursday. This solemn liturgy commemorates salvation of the world from sin. Good Friday is a day of prayer and penance. We should fast. In other words, we should eat about half of what we normally eat, as our health allows. Good Friday is also a day of abstinence, which means “no meat.” Holy Saturday: March 31, 2018 - There is no liturgy on this day but the Blessing of Easter Baskets is at 11:00 (Continued on page 4) Paschal Triduum Schedule Holy Thursday March 29 Mass of the Lord’s Supper 7 p.m. Followed by Eucharistic Adoration until midnight in the School Chapel Good Friday March 30 A day of fast and abstinence Stations of the Cross 1:30 p.m. Performance of Passion Play Presented by the 8 th Grade Class following the Stations of the Cross Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion 2:30 p.m. Holy Saturday March 31 Fasting and /or abstinence encouraged Blessing of Food (Church) – 11 a.m. Easter Vigil Mass 8:30 p.m. Easter Sunday Masses April 1 9:00 a.m. Mass and 12:00 noon Mass Blood Drive Today Walk ins are welcome 8 a.m.—2 p.m.

Triduum: The Three Days
I would like to invite everyone to join us for the Easter Triduum.
Like Peter, James and John, we can pray with Him until midnight."So, could you not keep watch with Me for one hour” (Mt.
Good Friday is also a day of abstinence, which means “no meat.”

The Catholic Imagination Perhaps the one thing that persons
who hate Catholicism and persons who truly love it have in common is a sense of the great mystery of the Church. Of course the Church is a great mystery in the fullest sense of the word. Those who hate or express indifference to Catholicism tend to scoff at the idea of this M y s t e r y a s c o m p l i c a t e d , superstitious, and difficult (they don't understand it). Those who love the C h u r c h m a r v e l a t t h e u n s e a r c h a b l e n e s s , t h e transcendence of the great Mysterium Fidei 0 for the Church is the both the Mystical Body of Christ and is at the same time the spotless Bride of Christ who feeds us, heals us, unites us, leads us, teaches us, and saves us by the power of the Sacraments which flow from God to us through her. The word “sacrament” itself comes from the Lat in sacramentum meaning mystery. Ok so what’s the point right? My point is this P the difference between hate/indifference and true, authentic love for the gift of the Catholic Faith, has something to do with our ability to see what is unseen P the ability to engage the Catholic imagination.
For many Catholics in today’s world the life of faith has become sort of a been-there-done-that experience. To those reading this who find themselves struggling with complacency in the face of so t r eme n d o u s a m y s t e r y a s Catholicism, may I suggest that it’s time to rub the sleepies out of your eyes and look again, not at what appears to be present on the surface, but look deeply into the great Divine Mystery that is the Catholic Faith. Take a look at when/how Jesus founded his church on Peter and the Apostles some 2000 yrs ago following his death and
resurrection – look again at the Church in light of the amazing s t rangeness o f the Eas ter proclamation, “He IS risen!” Consider the gritty, working-class band of Apostles and disciples of Christ - the regular folks from small towns hidden within the vast and powerful Roman Empire. Jesus led them by the power of the Holy Spirit to become the very foundation of the most effective force for love and human flourishing the world has ever seen! Finally, take a look at the boldness and power of the words of the 1700 yr. old Nicene Creed that we all recite every week at Mass – consider the theological struggles and battles the Early Church fought in ternal ly and external l y to understand and formulate the depth of meaning found in phrases like, “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father 0” No epic tale in literature can rival the drama and glory of Church History! I could go on and on.
With all that in mind, the beginning of Holy Week marks the perfect time/place to reignite the fire of the Holy Spirit in your soul. All it takes is the willingness to prayerfully step into the meaning of those unnerving events of 2000 yrs ago that remain so impactful that we celebrate and re-present them still today! There's so much more but this is a good place to begin. It's time to unleash the Catholic imagination on these profound, life changing mysteries – do this and God will unleash the Gospel in you!
Mr. Bob Calleja 8th grade catechist
AM. At 8:30 PM, the Easter Vigil Mass begins with the Service of Light. The Easter (Pascal) Candle is lit, the Exsultet is sung, and the Old Testament readings are read, retracing the steps of salvation history. After the Gloria is sung, we celebrate our death and resurrection with Christ with a reading from the New Testament; then the Gospel is read, catechumens are baptized, and confirmations take place. People are received into the Church, and they receive their First Communion. The Mass concludes with the “double Alleluia,” expressing our joy and hope in the Resurrection.
Easter Sunday – April 1, 2018 - Masses are at 9:00 AM, and 12 noon.
Mass as usual with a renewal of Baptismal Promises by everyone and with the sprinkling of the Holy Water.
I invite all of you to experience the Pascal Mystery — the whole narrative of Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection — by joining us for the Easter Triduum.
Something to Think About
On Easter Sunday we will be joined by numerous visitors, relative and friends so make sure you greet one another with JOY in your heart and a SMILE on your face even if you don’t get to sit in your usual place. Evangelizers need to be friendly and welcoming that will make people to come back and visit us more frequently. Remember, we are all called to be “a band of Joyful missionary disciples.” Blessings in this Holy Week! Fr. Socorro

Did you try? Do you know?U.S. Representative Henry Hyde (1924-2007) was an early supporter of the Pro-Life Movement. The Hyde Amendment is a legislative provision barring the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion. A message from Henry Hyde: “When the time comes, as it surely will, when we face that terrible moment, the final judgment, I’ve often though, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates there, you are there alone standing before God and a terror will rip your soul like nothing you can imagine. I think there’ll be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world, but are hear beautifully and very loudly in the next world and I think they will plead for everyone who has been in the movement. They will say to God, “Spare them, because they loved us,” and God will look at us and say not, “Did you succeed?” but “Did you try?” For more info:

March 25 – Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion (1st Century). Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion recalls Jesus’ tr iumphant entry into Jerusalem when he was greeted by crowds waving palms and cheering, and it marks the beginning of Holy Week.
Palm Sunday Our humanity bleeds through
today's Gospel passages in more ways than one. We see both elation and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days -- even hours -- Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out.
There are nearly two millennia between this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to return to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there. Are we the repentant woman at Bethany? Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't commit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying?
This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!"
Why Do Catholics
distribute Palms on Palm Sunday?
Although during his ministry, Jesus had refused the crowd’s attempts to make him king, he allowed people to publically acclaim him as the Messiah when he entered Jerusalem the Sunday before his passion and death. The crowds “took palm branches and went out to meet him” (John 12:13). To the ancient Jews, palms were a symbol of triumph and celebration. Today we are given palms as part of the Passion (Palm) Sunday liturgy to commemorate that last trip to Jerusalem.
