Historical Background of the Santo Niño Devotion and the Sinulog

The story of Santo Niño dates back to the discovery of the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, and the Christianization of the islands. The statue of the Holy Child Jesus, believed to have come from Belgium, was given to Humamay, later christened as Queen Juana, wife of the native leader, Rajah Humabon. There was natural resistance to the Spanish conquistadores by the natives of the islands, and from the remains of battle after battle between them, the image of the Santo Nino was discovered in a box. The box contained the unscathed image of the Child Jesus, which up to the present day is visited and honored in the Basilica Del Santo Niño in Cebu City, Philippines.

Every January, the Philippine nation celebrates and honors the Holy Child Jesus with processions, fluvial parades, dancing and prayers. At St. Justin’s we honor this tradition along with Filipino people around the world, by paying homage to the miracles that they have received from the Señor Santo Niño. We will see the ladies or “damas” of Queen Juana, dancing to the drumbeat of the Sinulog music. The Sinulog dance honors the Santo Niño and petitions are uttered after each step of the dance. The dancers accompany the Queen’s court as the Queen invokes the Santo Niño to listen to her prayers and continue to grant her petitions and those of her people. Following Queen Juana are chil-dren with flowers, and candy offerings. Filipinos believe that as a child, Jesus enjoys the presence and the company of little children.

Mass in Swahili A first for our parish…

On Sunday, January 18, we will be having a Mass at 2 p.m. in the Swahili language. A priest from Kenya, Fr. Joseph Okech Adhunga who now serves in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will be the presider. One of our parish groups, St. Michael’s Small Christian Community, arranged for the Mass and invites all to attend.

Watching for the Messiah Today's Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing

and following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it's easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are made.

John points to Jesus: "Look," he says, "there is the Lamb of God." John's faith in Jesus is evident, so evident that John's disciples immediately leave his side to follow this Jesus.

The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with him, and are quick to spread the good news of their discovery: "We have found the Messiah." It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Treasures from our Tradition Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of

Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improve-ment was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even heal-ing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true "last rite."

We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem re-luctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, opti-mally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Information requested on car damage Parishioner is looking for any information regarding dam-

age done to the rear bumper and tail light of a green Toyota Avalon that was parked in our front corner parking lot. Day of Reparation for Abortion 42nd Observance of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision

Our group went caroling starting on December 6th until December 20th, 2014. Reflexiones sobre la Palabra: ¿Dónde vives?

1 Samuel 3:3-10, 19 La vocación de Samuel puede considerarse como el surgimiento del profetismo en Israel, una nueva manera de manifestar la ex-periencia del Señor a través de la palabra. Samuel recibe la palabra de Yahvé por primera vez en una íntima conexión con el Arca y el santuario de Siló y en un momento en que no eran frecuentes las revelaciones. En esta ocasión Dios llama a Samuel para ser su ministro: el Señor confirma la consagración que su madre había hecho cuando él estaba todavía en su vientre y sus actua-ciones en el templo en presencia del sacerdote Elí.

1 Corintios 6:13-15 Todo me es lícito; así razonan quienes abogan por una conducta libre de restricciones. Cierta base tenían en el concepto de libertad cristiana que Pablo había enseñado en Corinto; sin embargo, él objeta el uso que hacen de este principio. Su respuesta “no todo conviene” les señala un contexto más allá del individuo, pues la libertad cristiana es libertad en socie-dad. En el versículo 15 se hace una aseveración insólita, con claras implica-ciones para la conducta: sus cuerpos son miembros de Cristo. En su forma de comportarse corporalmente en el mundo, el creyente debe llevar la impronta de Jesucristo; ya no puede relacionarse con otra persona en una forma que no manifieste el respeto y el amor servicial que caracterizó al Señor en su vida corporal.

Juan 1:35-42 Los discípulos siguen a Jesús. Él les pregunta qué buscan y ellos responden con otra pregunta; “¿dónde vives? La respuesta de Jesús es una invitación y una promesa a la vez. El evangelista da a continuación la identificación de uno de los discípulos: Andrés, que hace partícipe a su her-mano Simón del encuentro: Hemos encontrado al Mesías.

Nuestra cultura Cuando decimos “mi casa es su casa” verdaderamente lo sentimos así. Venir a nuestra casa es conocernos íntimamente, ser parte de nuestra familia.

Reflexiones para la homilía

En otros tiempos, un noviazgo se consideraba serio y se-guro cuando la joven invitaba a su amigo especial a venir a su casa y conocer a su familia. Era una manera de incorporar a la otra persona al nivel más íntimo de la vida personal. Jesús tam-bién invita a sus discípulos a hacer lo mismo: a venir a ver dónde vive, porque eso los sitúa a un nivel de intimidad nueva y profunda. Entrar en su casa es entrar en quién es; es poder comprender su persona total y su misión.

Entrar en su casa significa también adoptar la actitud de escucha, como la de Samuel. “Habla, Señor”. No se trata de escuchar por escuchar. Escuchar bien no es nada fácil, porque supone salir de uno mismo para entrar en lo que dice el otro; es decir, no estar tan lleno de ruido interno personal que no se pueda acoger y entender lo que dice el otro. Supone no estar preparando una respuesta en la que se demuestre que lo nuestro es más grande, más importante o más dramático que lo que nos están contando. Tal actitud de escucha es obediencia. No es una escucha pasiva que oye “como quien oye llover”. Al escu-char hay que ponerse en marcha, hay que seguir a la voz que escuchamos.

Muchas veces estamos como Samuel: no reconocemos la voz de Dios y nos quedamos tranquilos con las voces internas que nos dicen que sigamos “durmiendo”. Eso no nos provoca a la acción; ni a descubrir cuál es la voluntad de Dios para noso-tros. Al “entrar” donde Jesús habita, al conocerle íntimamente, se nos cambia la vida. Empezamos a querer lo que Dios quiere y como Dios lo quiere, aunque eso suponga que tenemos que dejar lo que queremos nosotros para querer lo que quiere Dios. Parece muy difícil pero, como Samuel y los discípulos, que se pusieron en marcha inmediatamente, tenemos la gracia de saber que Dios está con nosotros; que, aunque nos llame en medio de la noche más oscura, como a Samuel, Él mismo nos acompaña; que, aunque nos llame a lugares desconocidos como a los discí-pulos, Él estará ahí esperándonos. Nos hace la enorme gracia de invitarnos a su casa, a conocerle al nivel más íntimo de la persona. ¿Responderemos escuchando e invitándole a Él a nuestra vez a conocernos total e íntimamente?

Para la reflexión ¿De qué maneras siento que me llama Dios cada día? ¿Cómo le escucho a Él escuchando a los demás? ¿Cómo sigo y obe-dezco?

La alegría del Evangelio En el capítulo IV, el Papa Francisco hace una apasiona-

da defensa de la vida en todas sus formas. Comenta la situa-ción de los inmigrantes indocumentados y acusa a quienes no hacen nada por su defensa o ignoran su situación de com-plicidad.

Pasa luego a hablar de las mujeres que sufren situacio-nes de exclusión, maltrato o violencia. Dedica después va-rios párrafos a hablar de la defensa de niños inocentes y en especial de los no nacidos. Asegura que la Iglesia resiste y resistirá cualquier presión ideológica o cultural que presenta la postura de defensa de la vida como algo oscurantista y demasiado conservador. Dice el Papa: “No debe esperarse que la Iglesia cambie su postura sobre esta cuestión. Quiero ser completamente honesto al respecto. Éste no es un asunto sujeto a supuestas reformas o modernizaciones…”. Admite, sin embargo, que no se ha hecho lo suficiente para apoyar a mujeres que se encuentran en situaciones muy desesperadas, como cuando la vida que surge en ellas es producto de una violación o se da en un contexto de extrema pobreza. La defensa de la vida no se limita a la vida humana, sino que también se extiende al cuidado de todos los seres creados que, “a menudo quedan a merced de los intereses económi-cos o de un uso indiscriminado”. Pide el Papa que “no deje-mos que a nuestro paso queden signos de destrucción y de muerte que afecten nuestra vida y la de las futuras genera-ciones”. En este mismo contexto de la defensa de la vida, se dedica la siguiente sección al bien común y la paz, para los que el Papa define cuatro principios que brotan de la Doctri-na Social de la Iglesia:

-- El tiempo es superior al espacio. Esto permite planificar y buscar soluciones a largo plazo, sin saltar a conclusiones rápidas. -- La unidad prevalece sobre el conflicto -- La realidad es más importante que la idea. La realidad es lo que es, pero la idea se puede elaborar y, por lo tanto, ter-giversar. Este criterio nos lleva a impulsar la práctica, a realizar obras de justicia para que la Palabra sea fecunda. -- El todo es superior a la parte. “A los cristianos este prin-cipio nos habla de la totalidad del Evangelio que la Iglesia nos transmite y nos envía a predicar…. El evangelio tiene un criterio de totalidad que le es inherente: no termina de ser Buena Noticia hasta que no es anunciado a todos”.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Uno de los muchos títulos dados a Jesús en los evan-

gelios es el de Agnus Dei (Cordero de Dios). La imagen de un cordero no era extraña en la Palestina del primer siglo cristiano, pues se encontraban ovejas y pastores por todas partes. El cordero es la oveja de menos de un año. Es re-conocido como símbolo de mansedumbre e inocencia en muchas culturas.

Fue Juan Bautista quien le dio ese extraño título a Jesús (Juan 1:36). La imágen del cordero despertaba en los judíos, incluidos Jesús, Juan Bautista y los discípulos, la memoria de los célebres eventos del Éxodo. Cada año las familias judías escogían un corderito y lo preparaban para sacrifi-carlo en la Pascua. La mitad de la carne del sacrificio se ofrecía a Dios y la otra mitad se la comía la familia, de esta manera establecían una comunión con Dios. Designar a Jesús como Agnus Dei, era reconocer que él quitaría el pe-cado y que con su propia carne establecería una comunión entre Dios y la humanidad. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. sobre Roe v Wade. En observancia de la decisión de la Corte Suprema sobre Roe v. Wade, el

Obispo Vann invita a toda la comunidad católica a observar el día como un Día de Reparación. Se les invita a los católicos a practicar el ayuno, la abstinencia y la oración en ese día.

También están invitados a asistir a la Oración Vespertina el jueves 22 de enero del 2015 para orar por el fin del aborto y un renovado respeto por toda vida humana en la sociedad Americana. El servicio dará principio a las 7:00 p.m. en el Arboreto de la Catedral de Cristo, 13280 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove. En esta ocasión también distinguiremos a Ruth Rozak, directora de Centro de Vida de Santa Ana. Después del servicio tendremos una recepción y feria de ministe-rios en el Primer Piso del Centro Cultural.

La celebración sera en Honor de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes --Acompáñenos a una Misa especial que incluirá --Unción de los Enfermos --Bendición a las manos de los que proveen ayuda a los enfermos.

Este último fin de semana del Mes de Respeto a la Vida estamos dando una atención especial al asalto doloroso en la dignidad humana, que es la Violen-cia Doméstica. La violencia doméstica es un azote oculto que afecta a nuestras familias y comunidades. Sus víctimas mantienen el asunto en privado, por varias razones: temor, vergüenza, esfuerzos bien intencionados por preservar la familia. Los agresores, si es que alguna vez reconocen su problema, es improbable que accedan a tratarlo. Alcanza a mucha gente y no conoce fronteras de raza, clases sociales, etnia, credo religioso o edad (la mayoría de las víctimas son agredidas por primera vez en su adolescencia). Las estadísticas indican que una de cada cuatro mujeres sufre violencia doméstica en algún momento de su vida, y que tres de cada cuatro estadounidenses conoce a alguna víctima, aunque la mayoría de los casos no son informados a las autoridades.

El abuso es cualquier clase de comportamiento utilizado por una persona para controlar a otra a través del miedo y la intimidación. Este incluye el abuso emocional y psicológico, los golpes, y el ataque sexual. Algunos ejemplos de abuso domestico incluye golpizas, insultos, amenazas para matar o dañar a la esposa o hijos, destrucción de la propiedad, violación dentro del matrimonio, y esterilización o abortos forzados.
