Vinnies Bushfire Appeal

Archbishop Mark Coleridge and the Australian Bishops have asked that special collections be taken at Masses this weekend to support bushfire-affected communities.

A cash collection will be taken at all Masses. If you wish to receive a receipt, place donation in an envelope

Discipleship is not something that we take upon ourselves. We are called to it. Some people are very conscious of this call. They are aware of it in their aspira-tions and dreams; they recognise it in the events of their lives. They hear the call as clearly as Simon, Andrew, James and John heard the voice of Jesus. For others, the call to discipleship is not so clear. They may experience an un-defined restlessness, a dissatisfaction with their lives. People can respond to the call in one of two ways. They can consider the mere suggestion of disciple-ship an intrusion into their plans, or they can drop what they are doing, leave their former concerns behind and follow Jesus.

There is a misunderstanding about being called and leaving everything behind. Although the gospel says that the four men left their occupation of fishing in order to follow Jesus, this kind of ‘leaving behind’ was not, and still is not, required of all, for it is in the ordinary events of life that our salvation unfolds. For most people, this is precisely where they are to function as disciples. Still, disciples of Jesus are called to leave behind certain ways of living as they follow him. They are called away from lives of pettiness and division. They are called away from the kind of factionalism that seems to have threatened the unity of the Corinthian community. They are called away from narrow-mindedness and mean-spirited competition. It is much easier to leave nets than to leave the web of one’s prejudices.

The Little Kings Movement for the Handicapped

Appeal - 1/2 February

The Little King’s Movement for the Handicapped was founded in 1968 under the umbrella of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Little Kings provides spiritual, social and cultural assistance for people with disabili-ties and their families and depends entirely on donations – no Government subsidies are received and no fees are charged.

All workers in the Movement are unpaid volunteers and commit themselves to bringing a sense of worth, a sense of being valued and a sense of being loved to everyone.

The Church Appeal is one of the major fundraisers for the year. St Thomas’ has loyally supported this Movement for over 30 years and we again urge you to dig deep for this most worthy cause by supporting the collections this weekend.

Almighty God, Bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear and confusion.

Be close to our leaders; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of our world.

Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realising not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen.

Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfil the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ.

Amen.

Vinnies Collection Bins

Please don’t leave items outside the bin. They are unsightly, can create a hazard and are also open to the elements. Items can be dropped to the Vinnies shop 600 Wynnum Rd, Morningside. Ph: 3902 1821

Large items such as furniture should not be left at the bins. You can contact Vinnies for collection on 1800 846 643

Please don’t leave items in front of the Hall door. They create a fire hazard.

Have you ever wanted to experience the Passion, death and Resurrection of Jesus up close?

The Iona Passion Play is looking for potential apostles, Pharisees, crowd members and a Roman army! The Play is often a family experience with

children, parents and grandparents involved. Performed locally and around Australia for over 60 years this year we will be performing at Iona College Performing Arts Complex on the 4th and 10th of April. Rehearsals are held on Sundays from 2nd February.

We are currently seeking new cast and crew (all ages welcome – no experience necessary). Auditions will be held on Sunday 2nd and 9th February from 12pm-12:30pm in Oblate Hall at Iona College, 85 North Rd, Lindum (Wynnum West).
