YOUR GIFTS TO GOD & PARISH
From the Pope’s PulpitLet us work together to erad-icate the appalling scourge of modern slavery that still shackles millions of people in inhumanity and humilia-tion. Every human being is the image of God, and is free
and destined to exist in equality and fraternity. August 23, 2021
From the Pastor’s Pen
My thanks to everyone for the welcome ex-tended to Father Cyrus Gallagher last week. My prayer is that God will continue to bless the work of Unbound.Early this past week I had a followup appointment with my surgeon. He was pleased with my progress but also cautioned me that recovery will take a number of weeks. Presently I continue to work from home and soon I hope to slowly resume some in person work. It will be a process but I continue to be grateful for your out-pouring of love, support, and especially for your prayers. Please know that I am praying for all of you as well. This is Labor Day weekend. One eloquent modern writer on the subject of human labor was St. John Paul II. He was the first pope to have been a worker. As a young man he worked first in a quarry and then in a chemical factory. Later in 1956, he wrote a series of poems entitled, “The Quarry” where he observed, . . . the greatness of work is inside man. In another section he remarked, . . . man ma-tures through work which inspires him to difficult good. May the work that all of us do inspire us not just to do good but to do the difficult good. May our work lead us closer to help promote the common good, build up the Kingdom of God, and draw us closer to God. Please remember in your prayers all those workers who are unemployed, under-employed, and especially all those workers who are exploited.
The Parish Office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 6 but Mass will still be offered at 8:30 AM. Throughout the school year, at Mass and through periods of Eucharistic Adoration, our school children come to spend time with Jesus. In the first few weeks of school they, in return, receive a very special visit–from Jesus with our annual Eucharistic procession through school where a benediction is offered in each of the 27 classrooms as well as to the students of the Early Education Center. See the pictures below.

Words from BeyondThere once was an Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida.
His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail. Unfortunate-ly, he missed one letter when entering her address. So his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife, whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fainted to the floor. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: “Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Every-thing prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Signed, Your eternally loving husband. P.S. Sure is hot down here.”

A special Thank youWe want to thank all the great people of our parish for all the prayers that were
offered. We are doing OK.~Leo and Tillie Perkins
Why the name change to Young Church? There’s a reason that youth ministry looks and feels different from the rest of the Parish Schools of Religion. Once kids reach middle school and high school, they typically aren’t looking for more lessons and tests that proved beneficial in their younger years; no, rather, equipped with what they already know intellectually about the faith, they seek to reconcile what they know to be true in the abstract with their concrete experience of the world around them. In this context, they begin to make choices for themselves - how they dress, who they hang out with, what hobbies or interests they invest in, and, most importantly, what they believe about themselves, God, and the Church. They don’t want more classes and lessons, they want mentorship and accompaniment as they enter this next stage of their lives. That’s where youth ministry comes in.Youth ministry exists to provide a space for our parishioners in middle and high school to experience life and wrestle with all of its struggles and challenges through the eyes of faith within the context of a community of peers at their parish. It’s meant to be an expression of parish life in miniature that trains and equips young people for lifelong discipleship and participation in the life of the Church through a clear proclamation of the Gospel, a meaningful celebration of the Church’s Liturgical life, and a courageous witness in charity. So, why the name change? Why not just keep calling it “youth ministry”? I want to be more intentional about the words we use to talk about our youth ministry program-ming. Messaging matters, especially to younger generations. The names we give our programming matter.“Youth Ministry” is technically what the adults in the room are doing - ministering to youth.Calling it “youth ministry” seems to me to be inherently adult-centric. Now more than ever we’re seeing young people drift away from the Church in larger and larger (continues on page 6)

(continued from page 5)numbers. We need to be doing everything we can to keep our parish youth involved and invested. I believe it is time we began calling our youth programming something more youth-centric.Our parish youth are not the Church of tomorrow, they are the Church of today and they are young - they are the “Young Church’ of today’. Switching from calling it “Youth Ministry” to “Young Church” is one little way we can make our youth feel more at home at our parish. The name “Young Church’’ conveys to our younger parishio-ners more of a sense of belonging. It con-veys more of the truth that the youth of the parish belong here, they are essential mem-bers of the Church, this is their Church, and they have just as much of a right to be here as their parents and grandparents.Let’s make sure our younger parishioners feel welcome and at home now, so that they want to stick around when they’re older.
